My brain doesn't always believe this, understand this, or know what to do with this. But my heart, my heart knows it to be true. Because the Bible tells me so. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He spoke of God’s will being done "on earth as it is in heaven”. When we accept the gospel as truth and join God in the journey of life, things change. We recognize that our once uncontrollable desires often lead us to destruction and despair and to choose a new way, we need a new spirit. God’s Spirit at work in us. And as we place our hearts and lives in His capable hands, all of the humble things of this earth get touched by the holy. The Ugly House becomes the dream. This is what God does. He turns the rubble into the building blocks for His kingdom and leaves nothing, no part of our stories and sufferings, to waste. On earth as it is in Heaven. “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." It was an incredibly special moment for me to share the joy of the finished work with friends and family. And that manuscript stays in my office for me to look at still to this day. This time around, there was no gathering to unveil what I had been working on (for much longer than I had anticipated). And I miss that. So as I kick off 2025 with a fun 3-city book tour to sign “The Ugly House” for family, friends, and new friends yet to be made, I am bringing the final draft of the book with me! ▶️ WHAT IF I GET IT ALL WRONG? ◀️ For many years I beat myself up for never being a “good enough” Christian. It’s easier to play church or leave church then really dig into the messiness of living BOTH as human AND holy. I hate it. Because even if I can give myself grace for the mess ups, what about everyone else? Will I just be another hypocrite that people use to excuse why they could never believe in God? If you haven’t taken a moment to read what my new book is about, this is it. It’s an honest exploration of my own ugliness (both things I endured and things I created), and God’s response to me. Which I thought would include a lot more judgement and yelling. Turns out I was wrong about that, too. ❤️ FOR ALL THE PERFECTIONISTS, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU 🫶🏼 I have spent much of my life struggling to attain perfection. To be the perfect daughter, perfect wife, perfect mom, perfect pastor... and in all of my striving I have found more and more how much I miss the mark. Maybe that is why I wrote this new book as I watched others around me fumble around with feelings of "never good enough" for me. Maybe it is because my children deserve to be freed from the same prison that I had made into my home. Whatever the reason the Lord took me on the grace-filled journey through holding His desires for holiness and my constant lack of perfection in the same hand, I pray that it is one that can help us all. 🎁 THE BEST GIFT THIS CHRISTMAS… SHARING MY NEW BOOK WITH YOU 🎄 Last summer I stopped getting on socials, took a long overdue month-long sabbatical as we entered into our 8th year of senior pastoring, and did something I haven’t done in 20 years… I wrote for fun. What started as a short story near to my heart, never meant to escape beyond my computer, turned into sitting across from my son in an especially painful and tense season reading through the few handful of pages that I had typed to help him understand God’s great love for him. Even in the messiness. For us, especially in the messiness. He choked back tears and asked when I was going to finish the story. When I was going to tell it to everyone and what was so important about every detail. My first thought was, never, but after a few months I couldn’t shake the story of The Ugly House. It took me longer to write this one. This last year has been *painful* in all of the parenting ways. But as I penned each chapter I knew it was the story I needed to tell. The one that loves the perfectionists and the prodigals back from the edges. This is a coming home story. And I’d be so honored if you shared it with me. I have been quiet for a while, plugging along as the year offered more than its fair share of obstacles and gut-punching surprises. Parenting took on new challenges, the work that I had spent much of my life invested in has shifted, and some of my key friendships took a sudden turn to the pasture. Also, I was working on something. Something that will defeintely give me more opportunities to be rejected. I don’t love it. But it turns out, I don’t hate it. Starting this one out young with writing (ok, drawing weird shapes that she then explains to me in great detail and imagination) so she can practice paying attention to her own story. I was never a journal girl, but there is power in putting pen to paper. It is an official therapy tool for a reason. So go ahead, write down your story.
