There's always this period right before it all "comes together" where everything looks like an absolute mess because you're struggling with all the different tones that haven't been blended right yet or all the shades and forms that haven't been fully fleshed out yet. It's so hard to see what you're doing or to have faith in where you're going, and sure, sometimes it doesn't work out exactly, but often times you find that it just means you aren't "there" yet. It's like you're battling your way into the eye of hurricane and never sure where that moment of accomplishment will lay. It also doesn't help that often, that's what a lot of the creative process feels like - where you just absolutely cannot make any sense of what you're doing but you know you gotta get through anyways to realize your vision.

I've been feeling that a lot with this piece (and my grad school career) honestly. I know all this work will be for something, but you can never see it right in the midst of it. I tell myself that everything in its creation stages will be a little messy, uneven, and chaotic. So whether today that's your hoop or yourself, just reminding you that your art (and yourself!) are well worth the work ❤

The women in my family are some of the strongest I know, and I feel the most connected to them when I am creating with my hands - usually either through cooking or creating art.

I wanted to share some of my personal family history with you all today and share in the small and sometimes bittersweet joys of embracing 3 generations of my Chinese-American immigrant family. Caption was too long so, like a celebrity with a long overdue public apology, I turned to the Notes App.

The 1st image is of an silk embroidered stylized Chinese character '母' (Mǔ) which means mother, made for Mother's Day 2020.

The 2nd-6th photos are of my Notes App rambling that's mushy and gushy. Happy to send full text if you need captioning!

The 7th image is of the family photos in my grandparents' HK apartment - my college graduation photo, a baby photo of my uncle and my mom (light blurred my mom's face), and my mom's nursing school graduation photo.

The 8th image is the written Google Translate of my grandmother's 5am message to me, transmitted from a time zone 12 hours ahead, a distance ensuring that we are almost always on opposite sides of the day.

The 9th video is the Google Translate of the message above.

The 10th photo is of mom and I when I was little ❤ (I would share more current photos of my mom, grandma, and I but since is this a public platform, I think they'd prefer to stay more private!)

A little background story time! Courtney (@fawnstitch) and I met through Tumblr about 14 years ago, when we were both lil baby pink pastel bloggers. Along with a bigger group of girls around the world, we formed some friendships that would go on to last for years, but I've been especially grateful that Courtney and I continued to bond over embroidery and needlework through the years. We met for the very first time last week, and decided to surprise each other with a cute little art swap. The way our minds think alike! She made me the most adorable cherries and I made her a cherry blossom. She told me the little ribbon on mine was green for my middle name, Jade 🥺

And now I get to finally hang a piece of gorgeous artwork from a dear old friend over my desk and appreciate it every day. As always, if you haven't already, PLEASE give Courtney's work a look and follow, especially if you live in the UK/London! She has the most gorgeous and beautiful pieces, and I'm thrilled to finally have one of my own ❤️

A 🌸 for my darling @fawnstitch, sweetest angel baby to ever exist. What a delight it was to sew again, especially for a monochromatic piece (a new challenge) and for such a lovely friend and fellow embroidery artist. I finally had the chance to visit London and do an art swap with Courtney, who I had met on Tumblr some 13 or so years ago, and finally met in person this past week. A few weeks ago, I had the chance to take a Saori Weaving Class at @loopoftheloom in Brooklyn with one of my best friends @manjotkchh! I've never tried weaving before on a loom like this, but it was an incredibly satisfying and soothing experience. Plus, they have a fiber wall that I can only describe as my ideal interior design aesthetic (functional, colorful, and bright). It felt super impossible to choose what colors to start with, but it felt good to try and not overthink every little detail and just go with what felt fun and creative and fun to weave with. I do have a hand loom that I made an I ❤️ NY wall hanging with when I was little, but the SATISFACTION of bringing the comb down to keep my weaving even is truly unmatched.

Absolutely began wondering how much it would cost to install a loom like this in my apartment. I once had seen someone giving away a whole industrial-sized loom for free on FB Marketplace, but that would have required like a whole truck and enough space (and knowledge) to set it up. Definitely considering learning to weave more and 10000/10 would go play with strings like this again. taken in DUMBO, Brooklyn by @thegrateful_thread

Closing out 2023 with a renewed creative spirit and conviction that 2024 will be a time to more deeply explore creative pursuits and reconnect more deeply with a part of me that has felt buried for a very long time. Looking forward to filling up this art wall with friends' art and pieces I make for myself, looking forward to tackling new crafts with enthusiasm and less fear of not getting it "right" immediately.

May what is ahead of us be better than everything we are leaving behind 💕

Hello from NYC! 👋🏻

It's been a long time, but I figured it's a good time for an update. I graduated with my MPH this past May, and moved from Connecticut back to Queens, NY to start working full-time.

It's been a crazy few months characterized by tons of work, job applications, running around NYC trying to find housing, but I'm so happy to be finally settled and with a work life balance that actually lets me sew again. Of course, it wasn't all bad: I'd say 2023 has been pretty good to me so far. Not only did I graduate, but I finished my masters thesis, helped mobilize for AND passed legislation to increase harm reduction services in CT, and traveled to both Jordan and New Orleans! I celebrated my 26th birthday, watched my best friend get married, and got to move to my dream city and be close to family again.

Recently it's been so wonderful to come home, turn on the TV, and stitch. I'm still adjusting to the busy, non-stop NYC scene but I'm grateful for something that makes me just as content to be home. I am absolutely looking to get involved with any local embroidery and fiber arts communities as I settle back in, so if you're in Queens, let me know! I'd love to get back into the swing of things :)

'人魚' Stylized Embroidered Calligraphy, Single-stranded Needlepainting, 6" hoop. For @jadessong 's debut novel, CHLORINE (@chlorinenovel), available March 28, 2023 🌊

美人魚 (Měirényú) means "mermaid" in Chinese, 人魚 (Rényú) is the name of the protagonist in Chlorine. It was a joy and honor to work on this piece, again with the help of my father who helped me track down old calligraphy styles to mimic the fluidity of the water as closely as possible. This piece pushed me to both be careful of every little detail and to also let go of my strict adherence to precision. But most of all, so grateful to Jade for this opportunity, and to be able to have limited prints of this work available for some lucky customers who read her debut novel. Proceeds from this hoop are being donated to @redcanarysong, for their incredible work as an grassroots coalition that advocates for the rights of Asian and migrant massage parlor workers. More details to come, but please check Chlorine out in the meantime! 😊

Background:
Ren Yu is a swimmer. Her daily life starts and ends with the pool. Her teammates are her only friends. Her coach, her guiding light. If she swims well enough, she will be scouted, get a scholarship, go to a good school. Her parents will love her. Her coach will be kind to her. She will have a good life.

But these are human concerns. These are the concerns of those confined to land, those with legs. Ren grew up on stories of creatures of the deep, of the oceans and the rivers. Ones that called sailors to their doom. Ones that dragged them down and drowned them. Ones that feasted on their flesh. Ones of the creature that she's always longed to become: mermaid.

Ren aches to be in the water. She dreams of the scent of chlorine--the feel of it on her skin. And she will do anything she can to make a life for herself where she can be free. No matter the pain.
