As I reflect on this gathering, the word that keeps coming to mind is “expansion.”

We opened our minds and hearts to new (and old) ways of grieving and expanding our thinking around what is limiting us to fully express ourselves in grief.

By looking back to ancient traditions and rituals that honor the dead, we can begin to tap back into a sense of respect for raw human emotion and the benefits of openly expressing our grief with loved ones and in community. 🤗

We can consider ways in which we can incorporate those practices into our modern lives. And we can begin to give ourselves permission to slow down, listen to our needs, understand thoughts driven by ego, get curious, and open up to new experiences.

I am so grateful for all those who were a part of such a vibrant evening filled with enriching conversations and soulful connections, and trusted us with their unique grief journeys. 🫶🏽

Huge gratitude to @kelcie_clinkenbeard and @sundaymournings_ for sharing their wisdom and insights with us on such incredible topics!

Thank you so much to Steff at @soulcial_solutions for capturing the essence of the evening so beautifully! 🎥 🙌🏽

My heart is so so so full! 💖

🕯️ During the Wave of Light you can light a candle for your baby, for the baby of a family member or friend, or for all babies who are no longer earthside.

It means so much to the parents to have their babies remembered. 💕

The tradition takes place on October 15th at 7pm your time. Keep the candle lit for an hour to create a collective wave of light around the world.

🤍 White pumpkins are also a symbol of remembrance to honor Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. 🕊️✨

I’ll be lighting my candle for my little Autumn 🍁 and for all your little ones too. Who will you be lighting a candle for? 🕯️

After my miscarriage 11 years ago, October became an unexpected opportunity for me to share my story openly.

However, sometimes awareness months can be triggering or overwhelming. Totally true and valid, especially when we’ve experienced so much loss and heartbreak. ❤️‍🩹

Sometimes they can also inspire us. They can encourage us to share, to research, to relate, and find support. 💕

However you choose to interact with Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month is up to you, just make sure to honor what you need during this time.

Most importantly - remember that you’re never alone. 🥰

Today is “Day of the Daisy” 🐶🌼

It’s been a year without her. My son was familiar with Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos), so to honor her transition, he ceremoniously named September 20th “Day of the Daisy.”

This video was taken the day before she died. We took her to the park knowing it would be her last outing. This moment perfectly sums up her sweet personality - calm, loving, wise, regal. 👑 One of our many nicknames for her was Queen Daisy.

During her peaceful lounge in the grass, she watched the ducks float by, the birds soar above, and the dragonflies buzz around us. Now our sign for her visits are dragonflies. ✨

Not long after Daisy passed, we also had to tragically say goodbye to our bestest boy, Toby. He was a soft, white, fluffy fur ball so our sign for his visits are white feathers. 🪶 “Day of the Toby” is October 2nd. 🐶🤍

We think about them every day.

Our pets on the other side are never far from us. 💕 by @thegriefnook

That day was my uncle’s first spirit birthday since his passing last year. 🕊️🎉

I was walking with my son and mom when we noticed a butterfly fluttering around the bushes. As we got closer to it, it didn’t fly away and appeared to be interested in us so I held out my hand and it immediately landed on me. 🦋🥰

Then it flew over to my mom and landed on her head a few times and touched my son’s head (although it couldn’t land because he was a bit too jittery). It really seemed like it made an effort to visit all three of us, and kept circling back to visit each one of us.

That day also happened to be my uncle’s first birthday since he passed away last year. My mom took it as a sign from him saying hello, and then my son asked, “What if it’s a sign from Papa?”

💡✨ It was such a sweet reminder that we can interpret signs in ways that are personal and meaningful to us (or not assign meaning at all). The butterfly visit could have meant something different for all 3 of us, and there’s so much beauty in that.

Whether a sign, a spirit visit, or simply a moment of whimsy, there’s no denying the magic of the moment. 💛🦋✨

With our holidays feeling noticeably different without our loved ones & beloved pets, I thought about starting a new tradition to brighten up our days.

While I was thinking of what to do, my son brought home a Yule log recipe from school before winter break and said he wanted to try it. I said, “Let’s do it!”

Thanks to The Great British Bake Off always being on in the background, I knew what we were in for. This is not a very easy bake. And I’m no baker. 😅

So naturally we split into our finest roles - my husband the baker and assembler, my son the mathematician and measurer, and me the storyteller and photographer.

We talked about the significance of winter solstice and the origins of Yule traditions while hoping the cakes wouldn’t crack when we rolled them. 🍰

Well…they did! But it’s no big deal because we aren’t striving for perfection in this house, especially when it comes to trying new things.

Let me know if you tried any new traditions this year or kept the old ones alive. ✨ Chocolate Yule log and vanilla Yule log new holiday tradition by @thegriefnook

I wrote this last year about the humans I missed, but this year it also perfectly captures how much I miss our sweet little dogs too. 🐾

The new year reminds us that time marches on, which can knock the air out of our lungs as we think about moving into the future without our loved ones.

Eventually though, we can find creative and endearing ways to bring them with us and continue to connect with them in the new year and beyond. 🥰✨

✨🐶🐶✨ Creating their ofrenda so soon after their passing was difficult but also a beautiful way to process our loss of two of the goodest doggies ever.

The whole family got involved and contributed their creative gifts, immense love, and tender shares about fond memories, funny stories, and what we miss about them.

As you scroll through, I hope you enjoy seeing how this experience ignited our creativity ✂️, broke our hearts 💔, gave us peace 😌, and brought us together in our grief throughout this sacred week. 🕯️

Also - did you see the sign we received?✨

In loving memory of our sweet dogs 💕

🌞 Summer has arrived in the northern hemisphere, and with it comes hope, growth, and new opportunities.

But where does grief fit in? With all the joy that summer brings, are we allowed to be sad? (said in jest!)

Of course we are. But it can feel like a betrayal of sorts to laugh or rest when our souls and hearts are aching. 💔

Every season carries the duality of the grieving process, and this summer is no exception. 🫠

Give yourself grace as you feel it all - anger, hurt, loss - and also joy, love, and hope for new beginnings.

🌻☀️💛✨
