daylight savings time said farewell yesterday to the accompaniment of day long drizzle here and heavy flooding to the south. i consider myself pretty adaptable, but the semi annual dance of clock juggling daylight manipulation feels like just that - manipulation. i struggle enough with time as a construct on a daily basis. this extra cosmic hoop jumping exercise is contrived bullshit. the fine folks @nsmbteam are patient enough (and freshly unburdened of the stench of clock shifting bs) that they let me vent about it. there, i feel better now… #fallback #winterishere #hangintheredurango by @thegrimyhandshake
back at it over on the ‘stack! pain and suffering and enlightenment in equal measure. burning bikes on the cover, bumming out our readers, racing single speeds in baja, surreal illustrations by scott fike. 1999 - we may not have been raging against the machine, but we sure weren’t letting the suits have it easy. @bikemag #thisaintnopicnic by @thegrimyhandshake
did a little fiddling on the @trekbikes exceptional Fuel EX, stretching it out into a Fuel LX. result? happy camper? still working it out in my head. read about it over on @nsmbteam by @thegrimyhandshake
Repack turned 50 yesterday, and it was with a measure of sadness that i couldn’t make it out to pay homage. there’s an old lady in mexico who needs wrangling, a stack of bills to the ceiling, and the sense that time is moving faster than me. excuses and assholes, am i right? fuck, 40 years ago it felt like all i had was time and energy to burn! anyway, i missed the party, and a chance to catch up with a fistful of people who were directly influential in my life, and who i still want to be like when i grow up. it is heartwarming to see so many founding fathers and mothers still so filled with life and stoke, and it is a poignant reminder to savor that stoke, emphasized by the empty holes where so many other beautiful, influential souls have moved on from this earthly plane of smoking morrow brakes and dusty flat track slides. to everyone then and now, thanks for keeping the flame lit. i love you and owe you so much more than words can spell out. #repack #morrow #excelsior #skiptooth #inchpitch by @thegrimyhandshake
i had the great fortune last month to spend some time embedded with the @canyon_mtb factory race team at the Whistler World Cup, on behalf of @nsmbteam . it was a profoundly educational week. huge thanks to @fabienbarel and @gaberfox for granting me such close access. what a powerhouse crew! story is live on nsmb.com now. also, thanks to @ardorbrand and @blackbird_works for the banger photography! by @thegrimyhandshake
“everybody has their own opinion…” ain’t that the truth. my opinion is that this here @revelbikes Ranger kicks a whole lot of ass, and the descent from the top of Alpine Tunnel loop down to Tincup Pass road is worth every grinding second of the climb. wrote a little thing about it for the fine people over at @nsmbteam . i’m getting older, and the climbs are what they are, but bikes like this still make me feel like a kid. a fat kid, with questionable coordination, but a kid nonetheless. thanks for the damn good day out, @rustywrencher ! #comingdownthemountain #oneofmanychildren #everybodyhastheirownopinion #revelranger by @thegrimyhandshake
1999, damn that year started with a bang, then got weird. at @bikemag we had the audacity to run a Y2k issue in May, but i was still fizzing from being a mechanic at cyclocross worlds with @sjelmes. the issue after that, i was waxing rhapsodic about not catching fire at the sorta-inaugural SSWC in the company of @allhailtheblackmarket @bluecollarbikes916 @vonballbreaker @geneoberpriller @marko_salmon @eversonicyouth and a whole lot of other flame retardant demigods. someone posted a comment on an earlier insta-thing of mine about how the bike industry sure does seem to enjoy smelling its old farts these days. trust me on this one, whether it was sharing a cramped hotel room in slovakia with a tubercular 16 year old walker ferguson or ducking from the fireworks in what might have been @blackmtncycles backyard at the time, YOU DO NOT WANT TO SMELL THESE OLD FARTS. but you might want to read about them over on the ol’ stackarooni… #getbehindthemule #poprad #uplandisforyou by @thegrimyhandshake
whistler world cup done and dusted. so many good people, so many amazing stories to hear and tell. huge thanks to @gaberfox and @canyon_mtb for the inside glimpse of an intensely focused race team. @henri_kiefer, you are a hero for surviving that finish! @alethaostgaard , HOLY SHIT! way to serve notice. stories to come soon on @nsmbteam - what an incredible weekend! by @thegrimyhandshake
“what are YOU doing here”, he asked with a hint of what i imagined to be condescension… i’m working, damnit. “since when did you care about racing?”… since forever, son. now step aside, i got work to do. #whistler #uciworldcup #workingman by @thegrimyhandshake
damn, but we had some fun. in spite of what felt like living in a shitty corporate dystopia, we managed to let our freak flags fly. as i troll back through the first year of @bikemag being owned by Petersen, i am realizing that we were putting out a damn good magazine. the founding editors were no longer steering the rig, but we had picked up the flag, were being weird, taking chances, and remaining true to our original siren song. lab coat guy was a beautiful example. he only lasted a year, we got crucified in the letters to the editor, but god damn these were some memorable bike test headers! want more old #bikemag stuff? get thee to substack! #likeandsubscribe #tbt #tbteveryday #mtb #mtbhistory by @thegrimyhandshake
life lately… new yawk times really oughtta loosen up a little… #sillygames #theeveningrednessinthewest by @thegrimyhandshake
“It hit like a ball-peen hammer to the temple. New isn’t necessarily better. Sometimes new is just… newer… Old parts inevitably wear out with time, we end up remembering them in their worn out state of performance, which usually coincides with the release of new stuff. Hooray. Before we know it, the wallet’s gaping open and a new model year is tearing at the poor thing like a pack of jackals at a zebra carcass.” - more anti consumer hand wringing from days gone by (oh no, NINE SPEEDS?! the horror, the complexity…) over on ye olde stack of subs. like! subscribe! consume! #steamroller #jamestaylorisanasshole #bikemag #thegrimyhandshake #1999 by @thegrimyhandshake
