SELF-INTERVIEW: Molly Casares 🎨

As an artist, Molly is a painter, writer and sculpter. But leaving it at that really doesn’t encompass her creative practice. Molly is an interdisciplinary creative who utilises multiple mediums and creative disciplines to express her artistry. For issue 4, she shared her sculptures and paintings with us alongside an extremely intriguing self-interview.

Knowledge and research stands central to Molly’s creative practice. Technical, introspective and philosophical, she delves into multiple areas of research which help her to channel her ideas into artworks. We truly cannot summarise how her mind works, hence why it was only right to let her speak for herself.

In her writing with us, Molly explores the intrinsic link between knowledge and art, and the ways in which she creates through self discovery. Her work sits alongside some gorgeous photography by Charlotte, who you will know as our Resident Columnist! Don’t be fooled, we’re all interdisciplinary here 🙂‍↕️ Oh, and we’ve snuck a few b&w photos of Jake’s in too.

If you would like to think, give this one a read. Live on our website now (link in bio, as always).

FEATURE SPOTLIGHT: Honor Daisy Hughes 📝

Honor’s interview sits neatly in the centre spread of issue 4, and we couldn’t think of any better reading material to be there!

Honor is a passionate writer. Having pivoted from using her talents in a Journalism degree, she now reserves them for her poetry. Honor’s poetry is vulnerable and confessional as she uses it to discuss and process experiences from her life. Honor also enjoys slam poetry and performing her own work.

Her interview in this issue discusses all of this, her history and processes as a writer, plus showcases one of her poems named ‘Pegasus’. You can find Pegasus published on Honor’s Substack, and you can read this interview now on our website (link in bio)!

FEATURE SPOTLIGHT: Myer U Clark 🐠

Myer is our lovely cover star of issue 4, photographed by Jake and Tess in a very nautical fashion.

But don’t let that confuse you. Myer is a musician here in Bristol who is creating mesmerising yet unconventional Folk Pop music. His recent album release ‘Tinderbox’ is dynamic - we hear a range of classic folk instrumentation that moves through mesmerising melodies, to swelling breakdowns of sound.

We love Myer’s tendency to divert from familiar sounds to unexpected ones in his songs, and with a serving of 11 new ones, plus his historical discography, there’s plenty to enjoy. It’s funky and a bit weird, exactly what we look for!

Keep an eye on Myer’s channels to see when you might be able to catch a performance. As for the fish… we just really thought it would suit him to hold a fish.

FEATURE SPOTLIGHT: Elzee 🎧

Elliot Williams (who goes by the artist name Elzee, and makes up half of the DJ duo Dubruvvas) brings a brilliantly insightful interview to our latest issue.

Alongside his brother in Dubruvvas, Elliot brings d&b and UKG sounds to the Bristol nightlife. In his interview, Elliot tells us all about the experiences of a DJ in Bristol, but he also discusses with us his passion for creating music for the d/Deaf population.

He walks us through how he first made a connection with the charity @deafrave and its founder DJ Troi Lee, then how that opened a door for him to create music sets differently. We all learnt a little bit more about music with this one ☺️

You can check out when you can next see @dubruvvas play (we can vouch for their quality - they played a release night of ours and we loved it). And you can read the article in full on our website (link in bio).

RESIDENT ARTICLE: GUYL: Getting freaky with fanzine ⭐️

Grunt Up Your Life (GUYL) is an issue by issue column written by our wonderful Charlotte to inspire you! In each column, she takes on a new creative hobby with the goal of helping you find a new way to inject some artsy fun into your day to day.

In keeping with our issue theme of subcultures, Charlotte gives you a whistle stop tour through the history of fanzines, and a simple guideline on how you can make your very own zine today! Special nod to our designer Abi for her wonderful zine artwork supporting this article.

📝 @cbblondel
👩🏻‍💻 @grigsgraphics

It also feels like no better time to mention some of Grunt’s favourite Bristol zines right now:
@dreamers.zine
@gear.zine
@toughsellzine
@readzine

Plus a few places you can go if you want a helping hand with making your first zine 🩵

As always, support your local creatives, read a zine (or our magazine) and make something new! by @thegruntmag

FEATURE SPOTLIGHT: Frilly Thrills 👗🪡

Frilly Thrills is the clothing brand made by Molly Sisson, a designer and seamstress.

As both a seamstress and photographer, Molly has a keen eye for visual style. With her brand, her intentions are to make clothes that lean into hyper-femininity, but still take elements from typically ‘less feminine’ environments to influence their construction. This results in her use of pub and sports textiles (beer mats, wash cloths, fan scarves) paired with accents like frills and bows. The brand’s pieces are unique and playful with versatile silhouettes.

Molly is a sustainable creator and has even collaborated with our previous feature @demiihopkins - you can check out that work in the issue. Keep an eye out for the next drop, and go support your local designer!

Also an honorary shoutout to @the_old_duke for being the perfect backdrop to this wonderful photoshoot (by our very own Jake of course!). The 11am pint was the perfect touch 😌

RESIDENT ARTICLE: For the Love of Latrinalia 🎨✍🏻

We are certain that most of you have written on a toilet wall before. But what you might not know is that the action has a name; Latrinalia.

Our brilliant Journalist Oriah Lee shares her own toilet wall confessions in her article all about this niche act. She breaks down the origins of the term, it’s research (yes, there’s research!) and how surprisingly poignant it can sometimes be.

Find your copy of Grunt and give this article a read. We hope it inspires you to share your thoughts, political arguments, or toilet puns on your local graffitied bathroom 🙂‍↕️

SPOTLIGHT: Demi Hopkins 📷

Demi is our first Exhibition Feature in issue 4. Demi is a photographer with a strikingly unique style.

By day, she works as a camera shop and printing sales assistant. In her own words; “putting your nans dog on a cushion and mainly printing emails and taking passport pictures”.

Demi is a mixed medium artist. She fuses together film and digital photography, and interweaves materials like paint and collage into her final products. The results are punchy and eye-catching. Though Demi has various subjects she focuses on across fashion, arts and culture, the beautifully chaotic style carries through them all.

Demi gave us wayyyyyy too much to love, so here are some more of our favourites from her catalogue. Please go support her directly (there’s so much more to see on her IG), and consider working with her for your expressive photography needs (or dog-shaped cushions).

FEATURE SPOTLIGHT: Sinag Yuson 📸

Sinag is an analog photographer and artist with a love for documenting alternative and underrepresented narratives.

Our selection of Sinag’s work in issue 4 focuses on the DIY culture and music scene. Sinag shoots the raw energy of gigs and events and the connections formed in these spaces. The issue also features some of their self-portraits.

Sinag is immersed in diverse social and cultural environments in Bristol. You can see themes of self-expression, identities, and culture running through their photography. We are so lucky to be able to bring a slice of this environment to you all through Sinag’s feature 🖤

Grab a copy of issue 4 to read Sinag’s interview with Oriah, and learn a little more about a scene that may be new to you!
