Real life updates and vulnerability. I’m finding more and more that you never arrive at a particular point of contentment through achievement, which I spent most of my 20s trying to obtain. More often than not now I am finding that the small moments of life that bring the most fulfillment, the ones you look back on with glee, wonderment and an appreciation for the past, these are the moments spent with family and friends. The inside jokes that become reoccurring sitcom style themes, the smile and joy of sharing play with children, the conversations that require no effort, no preparation… these are the moments that bring a sense of achievement far greater than any numerical value or status that career success attempts to replicate. This is success in its purest, unadulterated form. In 2025, rather than only prioritizing career goals, physical, mental or emotional goals, I want to prioritize creating memories, the canon of life events that we share with family and friends that become the mythology of our intertwined lives. These are my new pursuits of life. The finer things of life. by @thehayethotel
When the night is young and the moon is full, the wolf howls beneath it. The be-groaning and moaning and emptiness that is the fast paced life is on full display. Rewarding but never fulfilling. Full but never satisfied. There is vanity in these walls. Painted along these streets. And the cries of insolence mirror itself in the night young sky. The secret grieving in the silence of wandering minds, echoes into the chambers of the night young sky. I was here. We were here. by @thehayethotel
Hey folks! I don’t post here often… but I feel the need to connect with people globally. I’ve been meaning to post more, connect, and share some thoughts for quite some time. I’ve also been dying to talk to people online, tell stories and get back to writing. Since 2010, I’ve always wrestled back and forth with cynicism towards social media and the “fakeness” of building a follower count and “brand.” I’m not here to build a brand but RATHER, I desire to cultivate a community of diverse people. What better way as a starting point for launching this experiment than to use Instagram? by @thehayethotel
We are the sum of our parts. We are the accumulation of the years that have gone before us. We are own worst critic and our greatest supporter. We bare the responsibility for all the tragic failures and celebrate the many wins along the way. In this life you will fail and you will fall. I am grateful for the many years of education that have been given to me in this wonderful beauty called life. As I reflect and move on from 2023, I think back to all the little moments… And I am grateful for all the adventures God has taken me on. From traversing the globe, to visiting and working in every corner of the United States, to finding a place and community to call home, I never could have imagined or foreseen what would would have taken place this year. As we move into the new year, take time to reflect and look back on all the hilltop moments and moments of pain and agony. Study these moments and attempt to extract the meaning(s) from them (if there are any). I believe there is victory on the horizon, a lesson to be learned for us all. My hope is that through this circumspection, you realize 2023 may not have lived to or met your expectations, but far exceeded what you could have envisioned. Here’s to 2024 by @thehayethotel
What I learned over the last year Timing I’ve found that throughout my life and travels these past 12 months, timing seems to be a constant theme. God’s time is rather inconspicuous and deliberate. We cannot force what does not belong and we cannot maneuver what may not fit into our lives. We certainly have free will and the choice to do whatever we want. However, there’s a release in not trying to figure out exactly when to do something or when to make a certain move or decision. Learning to trust in perfect timing is not easy. It takes patience, grace and a life of obedience. We will not always get it right, and that’s okay. There’s grace in brokenness and mistakes. I do believe that there is a perfect timing set apart for our lives and if we choose to trust that time, whether it’s that “feeling” in our gut or that still small voice that speaks to us in a gentle whisper, I encourage all of us to trust when to make those right decisions. Consistency Paired with timing, we must trust in the process and learn to be diligent with what’s in our hands. We’re all placed in specific spaces geographically, workplaces, families, friends and communities for specific purposes. It is not our job to figure out what purpose these aspects have in our life but rather, our job is to be consistent with what we have. It might not be much, it may be hell, but there’s a beauty in obedience, to not hammer away blindly, but with consistency and love. To show up for friends that you love or friends that may have hurt you, to show up to a job that you may not like working at everyday and to be in a community and be present and engaged, even when it doesn’t make sense. There is a deep reward for consistency and it is a road marked by perseverance. Those close to you will see it, and so will you. Last point in the comments by @thehayethotel

t h e o n e w h e r e You go to a memorial at 3pm, catch up with your friends outside the venue until 7:30pm, wait another hour to get seated at a Harmon approved restaurant, swap stories about life and all that’s going on in our worlds, stay until the restaurant is closed, and hang out in front of it until 12am to talk more life, health and sickness, eschatology, and the hope we have for humanity (@_nickhoag brought it home of course). This world may be hectic, but it’s great to have family to reminisce about our dear friend and all the great memories we had with him. Our lives may all be headed in different directions, but its beautiful unplanned moments like these in such interesting circumstances that allow us be brought together once again to enjoy the simple pleasures of fellowship and community. What a great reminder it is to be intentional and reach out to the ones you call family. What a day, what a night. It’s good be back home. #ToLiveAndDieInLA by @thehayethotel
t h e o n e w h e r e You sit parked in your driveway until 3am in shock and disbelief about your friend and brother being gone. It still does not feel real. These words do not suffice or capture the brilliance of Harmon. To know Harmon ‘was’ and still ‘is’ to love him. His loyalty knew no boundaries. His faith pushed him even further. I am thankful for his friendship and I will miss the lunches and dinners/late night food hangs, dream sessions, visions of the future, FaceTimes, encouragements and rebukes (too many to count). We would always punk Harmon for being such a brilliant man yet he would say the most ridiculous things at times... that was the dichotomy of Harmon. Harmon was a verb, proper noun and greater friend (IYKYK). We will miss the love he shared and so graciously poured over everyone. Your love and friendship was international and yet was so intentional. You moved mountains to be places because you loved so fiercely. You were every where and being all things, now you are resting with the king. You gave much more than you received. Thank you for teaching all of us so much, and for modeling generosity in every single facet. Thank you for being a brother to me and to so many others. Lastly, thank you for unapologetically being yourself and for becoming more and more like Christ. I can’t wait to see that grin again one day. Tell Jim we say hi. You finally did it bro. #toliveanddieinla by @thehayethotel
I remember watching this video and it brought me to tears. It’s quite powerful and I don’t know why I haven’t shared this until now. As the ground cried out for Abel all those years ago, so it cries out for this man’s family in these tragic and senseless brutal killings of civilian life in Tigray, Ethiopia. “The blood is still visible… it stains the ground.” (May 12, 2021) As the invading troops in Tigray are slowly leaving the region, the effects of the war on civilians and the lack of resources is still felt. Humanitarian aid is still being blocked by Ethiopian federal troops. Millions are on the brink of death as starvation is being using as a genocidal tactic as the @who reported. The effects of this genocide will be felt long after the war is over. To find out more about the war and how you can help, visit @omnatigray and check out their website for in depth coverage. #tigraygenocide #cnn #cnnnews by @thehayethotel
On this Father’s Day/World Refugee Day, I wanted to recognize all the fathers who led their families to new countries as either immigrants or refugees. Thank you to all the fathers who made that incredible sacrifice to leave behind the familiar, in search for opportunity in a new country and a fresh start. We may never know, nor will we ever experience all the amazing harrowing stories that immigrant fathers shrug off as stories from the past, but on this special day, we wanted to honor all the sacrifices you all have made for us. So thank you fathers for everything that you have done, we are grateful and would not be where we are if it were not for you. Goodbye 👋 by @thehayethotel
My camera died so I begrudgingly took this photo on my iPhone 6 (donations welcome). This is my father’s cousin Yohannes (Johannes), otherwise known as Uncle John. He fled Ethiopia in 1974 after the rise of communism and lived in West Germany for nearly 30 years before living in Melbourne for the last 20 years. We lost contact with him and the last time my father saw him was 40 years ago. I had the opportunity to visit him in Melbourne and it was one of the biggest highlights of my time here in Australia. Uncle John is a product of his generation, a man neither in or out of time (as represented by the contrast in lighting). A true intellectual and expert in matters of philosophy, theology and politics. He speaks 5 languages fluently: Tigrinya (Native), Italian, German, English and Arabic. We spoke mainly in English and Tigrinya out of convenience with a splash of Italian. What I loved about Uncle John was his love for life, his youth and athleticism, the elaborate stories he shared from the past and his ability to speak so eloquently, openly and boldly in his 4th language. In all his years of wisdom, he taught me that you can live simple and yet be in true abundance. The pride and joy that he has in family, the conversations with people, those experiences; THAT is what truly matters most in life. What we carry internally far outweighs any gain. Needless to say, we all need an Uncle John in our lives to remind us of this. Here’s to you 🥂 by @thehayethotel
