The Hemlock Journal is back with another exciting opportunity for another group of writers. After closely observing some trends, we finally landed on this conclusion that the stories that are longer than 7,000 words and shorter than 15,000 words do not generally get a big number of publication opportunities, as many journals do not accept them and traditional publication houses do not consider them worth publishing. We believe if a story of 4,000 words—which we have always accepted—can move many hearts, why not a story of 7,000 words, 10,000 words, 12,000 words, or 15,000 words? With this, we are opening a submission call for Novelettes (or you can call them longer short stories or shorter novellas. Doesn't matter. What matters to us is your story!). Submissions will remain open until December 31st. The selected authors will get their solo books published in the beginning of 2027. Don't wait! Submit a great work of fiction! Q.E.D. Brevity is the soul of wit, and of his stories. And the wordsmith does it again. This time, with just ONE sentence. Yes, ONE sentence. A sentence with just a few words, and it’s a story of a whole world, a history of displacement, and an unsettling truth. Drum rolls, please! Because Devashish Makhija has won First Place at @thehemlockjournal ’s One Sentence Story Contest, announced on November 1, 2026, for his story AMBUSH. The contest received 2K+ entries from 103 countries. Of these, 201 made the longlist before the selection was narrowed to a Top 20 shortlist. And then there was his AMBUSH: "When the paramilitary, crossing dam-waters, asked their boatman where his village was, he murmured – 'Right below us.'" November and every month of the coming years, be this beautiful for you, always. A hat tip to you, Dev! P.S. The post is longer than his story. Because me no him. 😂 #devashishmakhija #fiction #onesentencestory #joram #bhonsle by @thehemlockjournal
Now, we can finally tell the story of The Hemlock Journal's Print. A little over a year ago, we made a decision that would change our fate: to move from Digital Only to Print & Digital. It was a leap into the unknown. Finding publishers, securing the right platforms to sell and promote our books, designing print editions, bearing the printing costs, and wondering whether anyone would actually buy them — every step came with its own challenge. We took the challenge and everyone loved! That one decision changed everything. More people began to trust us with their work. More authors submitted. More writers found a home in our pages. Our membership grew, and more authors received the editorial feedback from us. What began as a challenge has become a legacy we are proud to carry forward. And we believe this journey should never end. The Hemlock Team invites you to submit your work to our upcoming Issue 12 and become part of this continuing legacy. We can't wait to read your work!
