It’s my Dad’s 78th birthday today. From the many stories I’ve heard from him, and from countless others over the years, this feels like nothing short of a miracle.

From partying with Sly Stone, to meeting a shaved-head Ozzy Osbourne on Daufuskie, to shag dancing through the early days of Hilton Head’s rise to partying prominence - it’s a sepia-toned nostalgia I heard so much about that it made my heart ache for a paradise I never knew. I lived vicariously through the stories of rock ’n’ roll at the Old Post Office, bonfires on the beach, drug smugglers, and what seemed like a never-ending party.

I get the distinct feeling that my father, along with a lot of his friends, was hell-bent on cramming at least three boring lives into one rollicking, smoking, red-hot, “go until the doors fall off” kind of life. They don’t make them like that anymore.

In his own words: “I’ve almost outlived them all.” That hits me hard. I’m a big believer in letting people know how I feel about them while they’re here, so here goes:

Dad, you are one of my biggest heroes. Without your help, support, and guidance, I have no idea where I’d be. You are one of the funniest people I’ve ever known, and your sense of humor has carried both of us through some turbulent times. You’ve pushed me to be honest, fair, to keep my word and always do my best. These life lessons have always served me well, and were exemplified first by you.

You’ve always been your own best advocate, and despite myriad health issues over the years, you’ve stayed vigilant. I’m incredibly proud of you. Your granddaughters adore their “JoeDaddy,” and you’re a recurring character in nearly every imaginary game that happens around this house.

You told me this would “just be another birthday” and that “at this age, who cares?” But every extra year has been a gift to me. You’ve been there for all of my life’s biggest moments, and I’m beyond grateful for that.

You’d be the first person to point out that you’re not perfect; but you are, and always have been, the perfect Dad for me.

Most of my favorite moments and most cherished relationships of the last 10 years have been preceded by Clay White asking “Hey, do you want to come out to this cool event?” Or “Hey have you met this great person?”. A friend to all, big and small. We are so grateful for your friendship and forever amazed at your ability to make friends in any and every corner of this world. Happy Birthday Buddy!!!! Stopping by to shout from the slopes that we’ll be at world famous @beechmtn tonight! Starting at 8pm! Hit that fresh pow and then ziggity zow down to the Lodge where we’ll be serving hot cocoa and rock n roll to warm your heart after your long day on the bunny slopes.

Then the next evening @kevtron_9000 and @lukelukem will be joining @hannahwicklund on the same stage at the same time. Happy New Year!

Another week of magical mountain music coming up this week at @zadiesmarket! Keep an eye out for our full October calendar coming soon.

This Thursday, we are stoked to host @thehighdivers for their debut full-band performance in Madison County. This band holds a special place in our hearts, featuring beautiful songs written by Marshall's own @lukelukem and @macmacmitchell, who have played with us at @zadiesmarket multiple times in more stripped-down settings. The dynamic songwriting duo of Luke and Mary Alice Mitchell are backed up by a powerful rhythm section of Charleston locals @kevtron_9000 and @elferrito, lead guitar from Asheville's @evan_veasey, and Marshall's @eclaywhite on trumpet. They are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their debut album "Riverlust" this week, with this show along the French abroad in Marshall and also a blowout at @theroyalamerican in Charleston, where it all started. You'll also recognize Luke as the wizard behind the soundboard at Zadie's every week, and also at @outtherestudioswnc in Shelton Laurel. The High Divers have toured the country together many times over, but they make their home in Marshall and are Zadie's family. Don't miss this special appearance!

Thank you all for joining us for our 1-year milestone week last week. We're tuckered out but we will be back and ready for more next week. There may also be a significant upgrade to the live music experience at Zadie's unveiled this week. More on that soon...

10 years ago, we released our first record, Riverlust! Produced and engineered by @wolfgangzimm, I’m still proud of what we got done. Most of my best friends are on the album, and it’s been a golden little key that opened many dream doors for us. Enjoy some behind the scenes shots from those sessions and over the years.

We’ll be playing @theroyalamerican where it all began October 3rd w/ @adblanco. Nothing but grateful for all the love.
