👁️ We are on a journey to redefine mental health.

@thehumanaspect are redefining mental health by broadening our perspective to see it beyond struggling to include proactive work to maintain good mental health and build resilience.

We focus on building resilience through our journey through the challenges we face and the lessons and skills we pick up along the way.

Today, we do this by integrating our resources into important services in society such as education, workplace wellbeing, social work, youth work, peer support and general public awareness.

In 2016, our founder @jimmywesterheim hit the streets in search of what connects us as humans.

What he found was that our life's challenges shape us in ways that connect us beyond the labels we carry.

It started with The Life Experience Library - Today, TheHumanAspect.com is the world’s largest digital and free mental health resource. 🧠👩‍💻🫂

“The world needs your voice and your voice has power” - @francyabendita

After years of struggling to survive, I left my family and crossed the border in hopes of creating a new life, only to find myself stuck in the same survival mode, but now as a migrant experiencing xenophobia and feeling lonely without my family. Growing up in Venezuela under the strong global sanctions, I felt that society’s demands on us took away any space for my musical passion, and when we lost my father, my mother spent all her energy on survival to keep me in school. I suppressed any hopes of my passion for music being a credible career path because I had to help my family. While focusing on building a life in Colombia, I suppressed it more. I ended up having to beg in the streets, like my mother had done to keep us alive. I lived in shared housing for migrants struggling to get a foothold, while the feeling of loneliness and pressure grew, suffocating my self-worth, one day at the time.

See how I started using my voice to make a little money on buses and how this connected me with a youth organization, Fundación Mi Sangre. I joined one of their psychosocial programs and youth leadership programs. This allowed me to share my emotions and get support for my passion for music by making a song about my people, xenophobia, and our journey. Learn how showcasing my talent and connecting with other women eventually led to us creating a workshop called “your voice has power”. I realized how music has always been my way of processing and expressing my emotions, and now, I could teach that to others. I finally found my space by combining a music career with social work.

👋 Meet @francyabendita , an artist from Venezuela, living in Colombia 🇻🇪

Francya grew up in challenging economic conditions in Venezuela, which worsened after the murder of her father. Francya was passionate about music but due to financial pressure and societal expectations, it felt impossible to pursue. Due to limited opportunities and the social context in Venezuela, she migrated to Colombia all alone, which came with its own challenges and migratory grief.

Through an organization dedicated to supporting youth leaders, she found a therapist who helped her process her grief and trauma. See how she was finally able to share her talent and inspire others with her story.

“Find the balance between the grief for what might have been and the joy in what you actually have” - Bjørn

Losing her and realizing that our parental aspirations were shattering with her last breath broke my soul. Growing up, I carried a gentle and concerned approach to the world that I carried into early adulthood, where being the observer and thinker felt more natural. When going through the heartbreaking loss of our new born daughter, I withdrew to the state where I did not speak for weeks, feeling trapped between the all-consuming grief and the disappointment of not being able to get back on my feet. Feeling that the help we were offered was better suited for outgoing people just added to the feeling of failing my expectations, leading to a constant state of survival and a year out of work in an attempt to regain my footing.

See how the advice from a friend helped me to keep saying yes to different types of support, allowing me to take small steps forward despite the help not suiting me well. Learn how I found a writing course for men through an organization for people who lost their child unexpectedly. This course allowed me to have a concrete slot that I could dedicate to a deeper understanding and reflection around my own grief. Combined with therapy and other daily actions, this helped me regain my footing, one step at the time, creating a better foundation for me to start working again and for us to try to establish a family again. We were fortunate to succeed, and that also brought another layer of healing to our journey.

🌎 How will addressing discrimination and confronting colonial narratives create the foundation for a more connected and impactful approach to humanitarian work?

This was the basis of the leading panel at the 3rd Nordic MHPSS conference, led by our founder Jimmy Westerheim (@jimmywesterheim) with Dixon Chibanda (@chibandadixon), Coumba Toure (@kuumbati) Simon Marot Touloung (@touloung45) and Hannah Strohmeier (@aidworker.wellbeing) as guests.

See how the colonial era and pseudoscience heavily influenced cultural biases which are still present today in the humanitarian sector and in global mental health. This is an introduction to our article entitled, “Perspectives from global mental health: Shifting power dynamics, confronting colonial structures and discrimination.”

“People were not born refugees, poverty is most of the time manufactured, there is a history that brought people where they are. And if we are serious about what we think and what we feel, we need to go back to the roots of the problems - What made people leave their lands, what made people unable to grow their food, for us to be humanitarian enough to feed them” - @kuumbati, Founder of @geantesinvisibles.

This clip is from the leading panel at the 3rd Nordic MHPSS conference, where we had the pleasure to have Coumba Touré.

Invisible Giants is an initiative created by Senegalese writer, storyteller, and feminist leader Coumba Touré. It
was born out of a desire to shine a light on extraordinary women who work simply and quietly for the development of their communities and activists in their own right for social change.

Find the whole panel conversation in the link in our bio👆as part of our accompanying article on confronting colonial structures and discrimination in the humanitarian sector and global mental health 🌎

🌎 “How far back are we comfortable to go in our endeavor to make the world a better place?” - @chibandadixon

How will addressing discrimination and confronting colonial narratives create the foundation for a more connected and impactful approach to humanitarian work?

This was the basis of the leading panel at the 3rd Nordic MHPSS conference - as the sector is built on the bedrock of colonial structures that fuel power imbalances, human rights abuses, and discrimination across society and within the sector. This creates a paradox felt daily by both the workers, and those receiving care. The people that are proximal to the problem the sector claims to address, and whose needs should be the key drivers for decisions.

Exposing humanitarian aid’s biggest existential dilemma: the very crises it exists to address such as human-made poverty, conflict, climate change-driven disasters, and discrimination, are the same conditions that sustain it’s existence.

Mental health, as a human foundation, is often ignored, despite being deeply tied to the structural inequalities shaping our world. As the narrative shifts to place human dignity back at the center of global mental health, this forum offers a vital space to finally confront the colonial structures in which the sector has been built upon.

Real change requires turning inward to address this and the change needs to start at the root.

In a time marked by polarization and fragility, the global mental health field can lead the transformation from inside the sector and out. To lead with integrity, we need to reimagine and rebuild our approaches by placing local knowledge and community-led healing at the centre. We must uplift suppressed local wisdom and methodologies as part of making the change sustainable.

Healing starts in our minds and hearts, and good practiced mental health and psychosocial support can empower the path of local actors and communities. Let’s make space for equal footing to drive the change, and then, we can move forward and heal - together.
