Today marks Orange Shirt Day, now formally recognized as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is marks 11 years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) released its 94 Calls to Action, of which only 14 have been completed. On this day and everyday, we show our support for residential school survivors, for the future generation of Indigenous children, and we recognize the ongoing effects of the residential school system. Included in this post is the history of the Orange Shirt Day movement, started by Phyllis Webstad, as well as ways in which each and every person can take action.

We hope you take this day and everyday to support Indigenous communities.

Wildfires in northern Ontario are continuing to spread, forcing evacuations, destroying homes, and creating hazardous air quality across the province.

Wildfires are not only an environmental crisis, they are also a humanitarian crisis affecting Indigenous communities across northern Ontario.

July 4th is a day that is meant to celebrate freedom. However, while the United States and its settlers claimed independence from Great Britain, it came at the cost of others’ freedom, including the land stolen from Indigenous Peoples, and African American folk who were stolen from their own homelands and forced into slavery. by @theindigenousfoundation

Canada day isn’t just a celebration. It’s a day of mourning, and of recognizing the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous communities presently.

July 1st celebrates the creation of Canada - but Canada was built upon the genocide, colonization, and oppression of Indigenous communities.

Celebrating Canada without recognizing the history of this country and without acknowledging the underrepresented and underfunded Indigenous communities who lack basic necessities is harmful - this Canada day, support Indigenous communities🧡

We are excited to announce the upcoming launch of the TIF Pathways Mentorship Program, an initiative designed to connect high school students with university and college mentors who can provide guidance on navigating post-secondary education, career exploration, leadership opportunities, scholarships, and student life.

Applying to university or college can feel overwhelming. Through one-on-one mentorship and community workshops, we hope to create a supportive space where students can ask questions, gain confidence, and learn from those who have already navigated the journey.

We are currently looking for university students interested in becoming mentors and high school students interested in receiving mentorship. Whether your interests are in healthcare, business, engineering, research, trades, education, or other fields, we welcome you to join us.

More information and applications will be released soon.

If you are interested, please fill out our interest form through the link in our bio! by @theindigenousfoundation

We are excited to start off the summer with our June book club pick, Becoming a Matriarch by Helen Knott. Please also make sure to listen to our new Unrooted podcast episode, hosted by Breanne Smith!

Becoming a Matriarch, is the bestselling follow-up to the award-winning, bestselling debut memoir, In My Own Moccasins.. Having lost both her mom and grandmother in just over six months, forced to navigate the fine lines between matriarchy, martyrdom, and codependency, Knott realizes she must let go, not just of the women who raised her, but of the woman she thought she was.

Woven into the pages are themes of mourning, sobriety through loss, and generational dreaming. Becoming a Matriarch is charted with poetic insights, sass, humour, and heart, taking the reader over the rivers and mountains of Dane Zaa territory in Northeastern British Columbia, along the cobbled streets of Antigua, Guatemala, and straight to the heart of what matriarchy truly means. This is a journey through pain, on the way to becoming.

Helen is a Dane Zaa, Cree, Metis and mixed settler descent woman from Prophet River First Nations living in Northeastern British Columbia. She is the author of the Nationally best-selling book, In My Own Moccasins, which was a longlisted for an RBC Taylor award. Her second book, Becoming a Matriarch, reached #1 selling status on the Toronto Star best sellers list, was named one of the top 10 books for 2023 by Indigo Canada, won the George Ryga Award, received the Jim Deva Award from the BC Yukon Book Prizes, was a finalist for a 2024 Governor Generals Award in Non-Fiction, and longlisted for Canada Reads 2025.

Helen holds a Bachelor of Social Work and a Masters in First Nations Studies. She has worked in advocacy, wellness, and education within Indigenous communities for over a decade at regional and provincial levels. She is a mediocre beader and an expert berry picker who enjoys holding babies and filling rooms with loud auntie laughter.
