Performer, vocal pedagogue, and music director, Dr. Josh Martin joins the SFASU
faculty as an Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre. Dr. Martin has taken the theatrical
and concert stage nationwide in leading roles of musical theatre and opera. His
pedagogical approach to applied voice training centers on developing a strong vocal technique geared toward the stylistic and multi-aesthetic versatility required of the modern MT performer. An accomplished music director and coach, Dr. Martin
develops vocalists and ensembles equally from the podium and the piano across
musical theatre, CCM, choral, and classical genres. Dr. Martin holds degrees in Vocal
Performance from Vanguard University, Cal State Fullerton, and the University of Memphis. by @thejdmartin

What’s up, Doc? šŸŽ“

It still hasn’t fully set in yet, but I did the thing.
Doctor of Musical Arts: complete!

My sister asked me recently, ā€œif you think back to Vanguard days [my undergrad alma mater], would you ever think you’d be here?ā€ Honestly, probably not, but what a blessing my educational journey has been. So many highlights, tons of performances, a handful of speed bumps, and countless incredible memories. There are far too many people to thank for one post, but to all who’ve been a part of my academic journey - family, teachers, friends, and colleagues from K-12 to Vanguard to CSUF to UofM: your investment is more valuable and impactful than you could ever know! Thank you! It takes a village, and we did it y’all. To God be the glory!

As I look to the next chapter (different post for a different day), I’m excited to invest into my own students and keep sharing the joy of singing, but for now, I’m gonna take a two-week nap. by @thejdmartin

This is a weird week of lasts.

- On Saturday, I had my last mainstage UofM performance.
- Today, I had my last studio class with my MT students.
- Tomorrow, I have my last voice lesson.
- Tomorrow is my last day of classes as a university student.
- This Saturday, I give my final student recital ever.

The time flies. I’m so grateful for what’s to come but also can’t help feeling a little sentimental. This semester (really, this whole degree) has been such a wild ride. The grind has been incredibly challenging, but I pause to realize the accomplishment. Soon, it’ll all be a memory. A pleasure that I haven’t fully processed.

From one to anybody out there who needs to hear it, pause and soak in the moment. It flies by. by @thejdmartin

One Night Only!

Join me on May 2nd at 4:30pm for ā€œBaritenor: a DMA Musical Theatre Cabaret,ā€ my final doctoral performance!

This cabaret follows my dissertation research, exploring the role of the baritenor voice in musical theatre and the various style and vocal aesthetic requirements of the middle-voiced Broadway Leading Man. I’ll be joined by vocalist Shelbi Sellers and music director & pianist Nathan Thomas as we perform a lineup of baritenor hits throughout musical theatre history.

Join us onstage in Harris Hall at the University of Memphis or via YouTube livestream as I celebrate this incredible academic journey with one final bow! by @thejdmartin

Introducing Dr. Josh Martin!

I’ve been cheesing all day! These past 80 weeks have certainly paid off. 5 semesters to complete a DMA is wild, but it’s all worth it for that Dr.

A huge shoutout to my doctoral committee, family, and friends for all the support and encouragement along the way, and the biggest shoutout to God for the strength and ability to do this thing.

I can’t wait to walk across that stage in two months and am even more excited for what God has on the horizon next! by @thejdmartin

2025
A year of incredible productivity, some trying times, and many wonderful memories! As drained as 2025 often left me, I look back on my accomplishments with pride and on the memories with great joy:

- Recap -
• Started the year with family
• Watched the Seahawks play in LA
• Refocused on my faith
• Took the stage as Sam in scenes from Susannah and as Joe in The Most Happy Fella (it was so nice to be back in MT!)
• Visited Graceland
• Survived a venomous bite (yikes)
• Spent the summer in SoCal and waxed out a full semester’s worth of academic coursework
• Visited family in Arizona
• Rang in my 30s!
• Enjoyed my first Michelin Star experience
• Hit the beach a number of times
• Visited the Happiest Place on Earth twice
• Enjoyed several nights at the theater
• Moved to a new place in Memphis
• Taught Art Song Literature this fall
• Performed a successful classical solo recital
• Refocused my studies onto cross-over voice and dove headfirst into musical theater again
• Danced many a line dance and country two step
• Passed my Doctoral Qualifying Exams in history and theory
• Restarted my gym journey
• Got plugged in with my church’s worship team
• Vacationed with my family in Maui
• Defended and passed my Comprehensive Exams
• Performed in my church’s Christmas spectacular
• Defended my dissertation proposal and got the green light
• Completed my remaining doctoral coursework
• Officially reached ABD status
• Wrapped the year with family and friends

2025 has been a good one! Heading into the new year, there’s a lot on the horizon - some things known, many completely unknown. Regardless, I trust it’s going to be a great year! Here’s to 2026! by @thejdmartin
