FISH & SCRIPTS EP: 19 was a very special evening!

We had a woman in the building who has been a part of our lives for almost our entire lives. To have walked the path she did and still be full of so much light, Tisha Campbell, is more than a living legend. She’s a walking miracle, that we all are blessed to have. She’s a cultural icon, an incomparable mind, a comedic genius, and a mother.

But on this day, she was family. Thank you Tisha Campbell, and thank you Dani Wright for stopping by Fish & Scripts. The space will never be the same. by @thejohnljackson

So, a lot of you all have been asking, “what is Fish-N-Scripts?” And it’s this.

It’s a community, it’s a place built for you, to be loved, to be seen, to be heard, to be Black out loud. Simply put, it’s Home. And more importantly, it’s SOUTHERN FRIED. by @thejohnljackson

“The Storm Is For The Seed”. Some storms in our life we brought on ourselves, others are from God. The storms that are from God are meant for things to grow! Your seed is growing! Be encouraged.

$Around this time last year, I heard the saxophones. I was at church playing flag football when I tore my ACL & Meniscus, sprained my LCL, AND with fractured my tibia and fibula. It all happened so fast. One second I was having a good time. The next time, I was in shock. Surgery was in October. And when I tell you everything in my life changed, I mean everything. An injury like this forces you slow down, and sit down. And while I would lying if I didn’t tell you some beautiful things came from it, there was a lot of hard things as well. I’m still working on getting my leg back together. I might not look like what I’m going through, but it’s still a struggle everyday. If you see a Unc or an OG out there battling through and injury, show him so love. We ain’t young no more y’all. Take it easy out there. by @thejohnljackson$

Thank you to the @geffenplayhouse and @gutzgirl for making space for Fish & Scripts at opening night of this amazing, must see show Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly, Glorious. It’s an incredibly moving show that challenges us, our heroes, and our respectability politics. It’s the type of theatre that should change you. And we had a ball!

We realize people may not know exactly what it is we do. But we’re so much more than a weekly script reading series or a fish fry. We are community in action. And we need your help to make our impact even bigger. Sowing into Fish & Scripts is sowing into good ground. Check out these numbers and send this to 5 people! Link to our GoFundMe is in our bio. Have you donated yet?

I’m watching the series finale of Hacks all in my feelings. Thinking about endings. Thinking about how we remember people. And what it means when they leave you. That’s when I realize they don’t. I can’t help but think about Pops.

He didn’t leave me. I hear his voice all the time. I see his smile. His deep dimples. I hear his laugh. I hear him yelling at me when I’m late to church. I don’t think about the end as much.

I remember him teaching me how you do one thing is you do everything. How not to be one the people who want to hold the mic but won’t hold a broom. All from sweeping.

I remember him teaching how the most important thing you can do for a woman is to take care of her mind. Taking care of her mind is protection, providing, foreplay, and everything else all rolled into one.

I remember him teaching me how to love like Christ, without ever telling me that’s what he was doing. I remember him forgiving without apologies, restoring without reservations, and giving without expecting return, being accountable without being harsh…. Sometimes lol

I remember him teaching me how to use what you have. Even if you had a three prong plug but a two prong outlet. Just rip it off and plug it in.

I remember him teaching me how to fix things, paint, drywall, organize, and feel his watchful eye every time I do any of it.

I remember him giving me an extra family. And some of the best parts of him are still here with us in his wife and the love he showed her that’s still permeate through the house and the internet. Pops poured so much into all of us that, though life will never be the same without him, he can’t leave us. He’ll always be a part of us. by @thejohnljackson
