Working on the new version of Salty & Sweet with @lisahannigan.

One morning in 2010 I woke up with this song in my head, sung in Lisa’s voice. The thing is, I didn’t yet know Lisa. I met her for the first time a little while after this and told her about it, asked if she might sing the song. She said that I should sing it myself, but she’d be happy to duet. I’m glad she did. This song is the one people always shout out for, it gets the biggest singalong at the end of a show and it’s been one of my favourites since I first played it live.

For Gatherings, I wanted to record a version with just Lisa and I in the studio, no frills, as if we were sharing a mic in a room full of people.

Home from a beautiful week of shows. Portugal @costa_festival to Ullapool Guitar Festival. I debuted my rendition of May You Never to 600 people in Albufeira (no pressure) and played a string quartet show in the Highlands. Felt like I’d leave my body a few times, but just about managed to stay put.

Playing with @seonaid_music and her quartet was a beautiful, life-affirming experience. One hour felt like five minutes.

Ullapool, 1am with @soenkemeinen and @willmcnicol at the helm. Two of the best guitarists in the world right there.

I started playing guitar thirty-three years ago. After a while I realised I wasn’t going to be very interested in doing anything else. Fast forward to 2022 when I fell deeply in love with electric guitar again, after buying this @muleresonatorguitars Mulecaster. It just made me a more curious player. Then again, a few months ago I found this @tworockamplification Studio Signature and it stopped me in my tracks, invited me to listen harder still. Yesterday I went to see Mick @that_pedal_show for coffee and a chat about delay pedals. Today, plugging in, I feel more curious than ever. It feels like music is always happening, everywhere, all we have to do is make ourselves receptive to it.

I’m so excited to announce the opening acts for my London residency, this November at St Pancras Old Church.

On Nov 18th and 19th, the pioneering multi-platinum songwriter and ridiculously great guitarist @fionabevan will be opening with her dreamy folk songs.

And then, on Nov 25th & 26th, my actual favourite comedian Stewart Lee (!!!) will open the show with a reading of his book Pea Green Boat. I’ll be improvising a live soundtrack to his darkly hilarious retelling of The Owl and the Pussy-Cat.

Nov 20th and 27th I’ll play two sets.

SO EXCITING. Who’s coming to a show?
