Let's discuss transforming the educational experience of Black children by eradicating injustices in schools

During a training with preservice teachers, someone asked me, ā€œCan punishment be neutral?ā€ And I lit up. Questions like that are my favorite because they get right to the heart of how we understand behavior—and how a behavioral approach can help us rethink how we respond to students.

I asked her to explain a bit more, and what she meant was this: if a response is intended to be a punisher but has no actual effect on behavior, is it then a neutral punishment? She was wondering if punishment has to be positive or negative, or if there’s an in-between.

What her question really captured for me is how, as educators, we often decide something is a punisher not because of its impact on behavior, but because we think it’s punishment. That’s where things get tricky, when we start talking about consequences, it doesn’t always line up with our prior understanding of what punishment means. And when we add ā€œpositiveā€ and ā€œnegativeā€ into the mix, it gets even more complicated. It’s a reminder that what matters most isn’t our intention...it’s the behavior’s response.

This is exactly why I feel so strongly about the role of behavior analysis in schools.
So, what do you think—can punishment ever be neutral?

It’s been tough to watch the current attacks on immigrants and the conversation around DEI unfold. As the child of immigrants, my unique perspective has shaped so much of who I am….something I spoke about in my TEDx talk. And one of the biggest highlights from my talk is how I benefit it from being around my classmates growing up, who were very different from me because they were not the children of West African immigrants. I learned so much from them and it has made me a better educator.

What’s missing in the current conversation about diversity is the simple truth that we all benefit from diverse perspectives. DEI isn’t about placing unqualified people in positions they don’t deserve. As a Black person, I know this all too well, because I am never in a room where I am underqualified. In fact, I’m often surrounded by Black women who are the most qualified people there. PERIOD.

The world feels extra crappy right now with the new president and administration, and I’ve been working on not letting the American brand of hate consume me. I’ve been finding calmness in reading about a fellow Black girl with an African name, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. I definitely judged this book solely by its cover, and it did not disappoint. 🌸 by @thekeyconsult

It’s been a while since I’ve been as engaged here as I used to be. In 2019, I started my doctoral training, and social media had to take a bit of a back seat. I’ve missed the incredible community we had here, and I’d love to reconnect with you all. The Key has always been about justice in schools and the mission we share. I’d love to hear from you—what have you been working on over these years? What have I missed that you’re proud of?

First off, I can't explain what my face is doing in this picture. 🤨 What I do know is that this year's Black Applied Behavior Analyst Conference, #BABA2024, was wonderful. For many Black behavior analysts, we recall attending conferences and seeing very few Black colleagues. However, as the profession has grown, we have seen more community and racial and cultural diversity.

There is a cultural difference in how people participate and engage with a speaker in a large group. For example, think about the call and response you've seen or heard in Black churches. Well, that was observed at BABA. My presentation felt more like a conversation; we were in community, and I was able to connect with those who attended. One of my favorite presentations to date. Were you at BABA? What was your highlight?

The highlight of this year's conference cycle is being invited to speak at the Black Applied Behavior Analysis (BABA) Conference next week! Black behavior analysts are incredibly underrepresented, which makes this space needed.

Early in my career, I recall being one of the very few Black behavior analysts at conferences. Now, we have our own space. Next week at BABA's conference, I’ll discuss engaging in social resistance while caring for our well-being as Black people. #BABA #BABACon24 by @thekeyconsult

I have been yelling from the mountaintop about the discipline gap, which may be how you found this page. But I have also been raising my voice about the occupational experiences of teachers. This Thursday, April 25th, I will discuss my recent research that examines the connection between teacher wellbeing and the school discipline crisis with APBA. Go to @apbahome for more information.

We had a time last night!

This year AERA was held in Philadelphia and my colleagues @electricladyluv, Jacqueline Tisdale, and I used this as an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of Black education and art in our hometown. In the historic Germantown area of Philadelphia, we hosted an event that brought together the scholars traveling to Philly for the conference, educators who pour into our children and the folks that live and thrive in Philly everyday. There was food, music, a live graffiti tutorial, and a presentation on Black education in Philly going back to the 1700. It was a blast.

Thank you to @jayo_v , @sweeteats_entertainment , @1838blackmetropolis & @centerblacked for donating your knowledge and talents with us. āœŠšŸæ

Did I mention this was a spotlight event by AERA during their conference.šŸŽ‰

Will you be attending #AERA24 in Philly? Check out the Black Educator's Arts Stroll in historical Germantown. Hosted by Stephanie Joy Tisdale, Jacquie Zahrah Tisdale, & Dr. Mawule Sevon. Join us for an evening celebrating the intersection of Black education, arts, and culture.

This event is more than a stroll; it’s a movement towards dismantling racial injustice, aligned with this year’s AERA theme. As an off-site SIG Hip Hop Theories and Praxis event, this is a celebration of Black educators’ impact in and out of the classroom, highlighting their role in empowering communities and preserving cultural traditions.
