POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Seventeen summers ago, I was lucky enough to start my first job @metmuseum. This June, my Met Alphabet launched at The Met Store: 26 letters featuring objects I got to know during my decade of work at the Museum. From the iconic Carpeaux sculpture I’d walk by every morning on the way to my desk, to the Egyptian Estate Figure that appeared on my college art history finals—I found such a personal connection to these artworks, which progressed even further in painting them.

Since the Met Alphabet’s launch, I’ve lost count of the number of you who’ve shared your own stories about a connection to the Museum—or to one of these letters. I’m so excited to see where this artwork will lead; it’s just the beginning.

Steal my costume ideas! Adding my notes in captions for how I created these, and what I might do differently. Here comes 8 years’ worth of inspo…

🍏2018: I went as Rene Magritte’s iconic painting, The Son of Man, with a watercolor apple and a clip-on tie. Someone should grab a friend for the lookalike painting, Man with a Bowler Hat. 🕊️ Or, go full Thomas Crown Affair and have 3 or more friends dress in this costume for a jaunty art heist…

🖤Not my artiest costume but certainly the year of pup-wrangling. Kids wore HannaJams, I bought a wig, et voila.

⚡️McBowie Family, chosen when my oldest went through a major Starman phase. Recommend reinterpreting this one as a group costume of favorite “Bowie Eras”

🎧I spray-painted children’s astronaut helmets and bought the kids these suits from Target. Got white pumpkins at the bodega and hand-painted them with acrylic and paint-pen.

🎻 Smashing Pumpkins, our peak. I painted recycled boxes to make our instruments and set, got cheap suits from Etsy, and repurposed a favorite @toryburch dress to play D’arcy. Wig is from Village Party Store in NYC!

Mario was mostly store-bought/closet-shopping, plus the painted star elements for my youngest ⭐️

♟️Knight, Queen, Bishop and Pawn, c/o papier-mâché hats and printed chess boards.

🧡 My favorite to date: Iconic New Yorker covers. 2026’s costume will be just as handpainted (if not quite as erudite)… taken in New York, New York by @theletternest

Introducing our new Halloween Alphabet Placemats. Intricately painted in watercolor, these letters include references as varied as Stranger Things, Edgar Allan Poe, The Thomas Crown Affair (via Rene Magritte), and 1990s New England Haunted House attractions.

We launched the alphabet exclusively as a Placemat, so that these letters get maximum interaction with their viewer—right at the dining room table, consumed along with candy!

Hope you love them,
