The Machrie! ⬇️

We flew to the Hebridean island of Islay to visit The Machrie, somewhere I’d heard a lot about, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

From the incredible rooms and views across the course to the fantastic breakfast, the hotel and clubhouse were the perfect base for exploring this beautiful part of the world.

The golf course itself is a classic links that’s firm, fast and requires plenty of creativity, particularly around the greens. With incredible views throughout and holes that hug the coastline, it’s a truly special place to play.

After golf, there was time for a sauna and cold plunge before an incredible lobster dinner, followed by a spectacular sunset to finish the day.

I’ve played 95 of Scotland’s Top 100 courses and, after St Andrews (Old), the course I think every American should have on their itinerary might surprise you.
I think US golfers come to Scotland to experience what they can’t get readily at home; authenticity, quirkiness, history, an X Factor setting and, of course, proper links golf. You don’t fly thousands of miles for something sanitised, or even possibly something especially fair. It should be raw, natural, memorable – and even a little bewildering. A remote location adds to the mystique.
The Machrie on the island of Islay has all these things in abundance. Plus, it is also now just as impressive off the course, with a seriously good hotel that oozes comfort and style. It is the winning combination for overseas golfers: an entertaining, idiosyncratic course that bounces over compelling linksland combined with accommodation that has a touch of opulence, first-class food and excellent service. That is the modern Machrie.
The course was originally designed by Willie Campbell in 1891. I played it, and it was wonderful. But while it was fun, it was also really hard in the standard Islay wind. So, when The Machrie came under new ownership, it was redesigned by DJ Russell. It’s been an enormous success.
The front nine is one of GB&I’s finest. As you walk over the brow of the 1st, Laggan Bay comes into view, beyond the funky opening green. The 2nd sweeps right-to-left alongside a burn, then you turn round and play alongside the sea on the short 3rd. The 4th and 5th play towards then away from the hotel; the former with a blind or semi-blind approach beyond a huge sand hill, the latter a tough par 4 up and over a hill then down to a fun green.
The 6th is along the shoreline and downwind as it was today, you can get close if you find the left-side speed slot. 7 can be driven too, but the humps can easily kick your ball into trouble. A sensible lay up likely leaves a blind approach. The 8th has approach to a narrow elevated green with the most acutely sloping false front. A beauty – as is 9, a gorgeous par 3 from a high tee to a green cuddled by dunes with the sea beyond.
