Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with WHY WE DANCE at The Main! MN Made: WHY WE DANCE Tuesday, Nov 10 • 6pm Party in The Film Strip 7:15pm Screening + Q&A w/ Director Oogie Push & Special Guests WHY WE DANCE traces the heartbeat of land through footwork, sound and circular movement, revealing how dance becomes a bridge between body and earth, self and community, and why reclaiming space matters. On land marked by erasure and ignorance, a letter arrived in 1923 ordering hundreds of Tribal Nations to stop dancing. What officials called “unproductive gatherings” were in truth ceremonies of harvest, gratitude, and renewal — times when communities came together to thank the land, share food, and prepare for winter. The Meskwaki people refused to be silenced. In response, they organized one of the largest powwows of their time, a four-day celebration that drew thousands from neighboring towns and Tribal Nations. The tradition itself became the resistance. One hundred years later, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow continues celebrating, gathering families, friends to dance, sing, and give, carrying forward a rhythm that could not be outlawed. Filmed across the Rosebud Reservation, the Meskwaki Settlement, the Twin Cities, O'ahu, Hawaii and Mataxhi, Mexico, WHY WE DANCE is both document and celebration. A story of endurance, belonging and the movement that continues to bind communities across generations and geographies. The MN Made series celebrates the dynamic range of films made by Minnesota filmmakers and artists. Presented with support from the McKnight Foundation and Minnesota State Arts Board. by @themaincinema

Two award-winning films. One unforgettable night. Catch an Academy Award submission and a film critics called the best of its year, both in their Minnesota Premieres this Tuesday at The Main Cinema (@themaincinema ): Tue, Oct 27 · 5:00 PM | Oxygen: Winner of Best Israeli Feature at the Jerusalem Film Festival, Oxygen is a tense, nuanced portrait of motherhood in Israeli society. Anat, a single mother and devoted literature teacher, is eagerly awaiting her son Ido’s discharge from the army when war breaks out and he tells her all discharges have been suspended. But when Anat discovers that Ido was not forced to stay, her commitment to the military cause begins to fracture. Tue, Oct 27 · 7:30 PM | The Sea: Israel’s official submission to the 98th Academy Awards for Best International Film and nominated for a record 13 Israeli Academy Awards (Ophirs), winning Best Film and Best Actor, The Sea is a quietly majestic ode to the best of the human spirit. At once tender, wryly comic, and deeply profound, it tells the story of Khaled, a 12-year-old boy from a Palestinian village, who is granted the rare chance to see the sea for the first time on a school trip. But when his group reaches a military checkpoint, the soldiers declare his permit invalid and send him home, leaving him behind as his classmates continue onward. Undeterred, Khaled embarks on an uncertain journey to the sea, navigating a world he barely knows and a language he does not speak, propelled by a blend of curiosity, hope, and stubborn determination. Tickets: $16 GA / $12 Students Presented in partnership with the Israel Center of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation and Rimon: The Minnesota Jewish Arts Council. 🎟️ Tickets on sale now at tcjfilmfest.org (link in bio)! by @themaincinema
