It's Pub Day!!!!! Finally I can say that 🌟 THE TWELVE DAYS OF JAMAICAN CHRISTMAS is in stores now!!! 🎄🔔✨

This book really pushed my imagination composition-wise and the results were worth it. I feel like i really grew as an illustrator!

In this book you'll see the chaos of a Caribbean Christmas, and my first dog Benji is starring in the shenanigans.

Whether you come from a big or small family, I hope you can relate to the warm holiday feeling, and that it brings back golden memories. There is a lot of food, holiday fun, and a lot of LOVE!!

Congratulations on the publication of Zalika Reid-Benta’s THE TWELVE DAYS OF JAMAICAN CHRISTMAS, illustrated by Mariyah Rahman and published today by Tundra Books!

On the third day of Christmas, mi granny gave to me three beef patties, two sorrel drinks and some saltfish with some ackee. And then coco breads and Champagne colas. Plaintains and black cakes and breadfruits and yams — and don’t forget the rice and peas!

This playful twist on the classic Christmas song builds a delicious festive feast, Jamaican style. As Granny bakes and roasts and fries, her family prepares for the season, shopping and decorating and “helping” in the kitchen, hungrily watching the dishes come together.

A joyful seasonal celebration of family and food.

Includes recipes for ackee and saltfish.

Finally I can share more from Under the Clam Moon!
In this painting, our little team stops for some well deserved s'mores. You can see my sweet girl Zoey in the lower left corner, about to catch hands from Crabby. Like all other illustrators, I especially delight in painting my four legged babies into every book. Maybe I should do a post with all the sneaky pet portraits? Let me know what you guys think!! ❤️

IT'S PUB DAY!!!!!! 🎉💖✨ Under the Clam Moon is now out in the world and I'm so so so excited to share more work from this book!!! It feels like an eternity since I got this gorgeous manuscript by the amazing @kaitwells15 and imagined it almost fully painted in my head before I even began sketching.

The story is so beautiful, and there was no way I could pass up painting the ocean at night. I hope you will enjoy Under the Clam Moon! Please be on the look out for my little crab friend throughout the spreads, he has brought me so much joy 😊

✨💙🌊 Announcing! 🌊💙✨

We can’t wait for LEGENDS OF THE LAKE to make its way to bookshelves next summer from @greenwillowbooks! 💙

Virginia Duncan at Greenwillow has bought world rights to Legends of the Lake by Celeste Mohammed (@celestemohammed), illustrated by Mariyah Rahman (@themaribug) a picture book that shows different perspectives of the history of Pitch Lake, the world‘s largest natural deposit of asphalt, located in the village of La Brea on the island of Trinidad. Publication is planned for summer 2027; Jennifer Carlson at Dunow, Carlson, & Lerner represented the author, and Christy Ewers at the CAT Agency represented the illustrator. by @themaribug

Main character sketch from Under the Clam Moon! For this character design, I wanted our little friend to be confident and curious, and I found what I was looking for in this sketch. All of my subsequent drawings were based on this final design. Under the Clam Moon is genuinely one of my favourite books that I've illustrated, and I can't wait to be able to share more from it. I've moved a great many times, yet my favourite home was the one we made briefly in the hills of Maraval during the pandemic. I painted this a few years ago, the week we were due to move to Denmark. Whilst packing, I looked out the window and saw golden hour illuminating the mountains as the egrets all flew home to roost. I scrawled this down very quickly before the light faded then forgot all about it in the rush of moving. What a warm and happy surprise to find it in my files during a January snow and hailstorm.
