Enabling survivors of interpersonal violence to heal from their abuse, reclaim their autonomy, and reawaken their hopes and dreams.

In the Transitional Housing program at The Mary Parrish Center, survivors fleeing Interpersonal Violence can stay cost-free in our apartments for up to one year. By covering the cost of rent and utilities, we eliminate one of the most significant barriers they face in rebuilding their lives. It is a service-rich and intensive program, designed for clients with deep but nonpermanent needs. Last year, 76 survivors, including their children, in the Nashville community were served by this program. Learn more: www.maryparrish.org/transitional-housing

According to @nnedv’s 20th Annual #DVCounts Report, in just one day in 2025, Tennessee’s domestic violence programs were unable to meet 46 requests for services that programs could not provide because they lacked sufficient resources. Approximately 91% of these unmet requests were for emergency shelter, hotels, motels, transitional housing, and other housing. Survivors and their children can’t wait for a safe place to stay.

A common frame of reference for defining abuse is the Power and Control Wheel, developed by the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project. The wheel serves as a diagram of tactics that an abusive partner uses to keep their victims in a relationship. The inside of the wheel is made up of subtle, continual behaviors over time, while the outer ring represents physical and sexual violence.

If you’re not familiar with financial abuse, it’s a common tactic used by abusers to gain power and control in a relationship. Examples include giving you an allowance, not letting you have your own money, hiding family assets, running up debt, interfering with your job, and ruining your credit. Studies show that up to 99% of domestic violence survivors experience financial abuse, and more than 70% of survivors identify “access to money” as a barrier to leaving an abuser. This means that many survivors are forced to stay with abusers for months, even years, before they can afford housing and other essentials. Learn more about how The Mary Parrish Center empowers survivors to leave at MaryParrish.org
