What do you call a group of detectorists? An absolute f*cking bunch of legends. That’s what. @wanderingwiltshire (with help from @miss_detectorist @the_sussex_searcher and @detectortimmy) managed to organise an absolutely cracking weekend of detecting, bringing together some of the best eggs in the hobby in a prime location. There was laughter, food, history, some questionable banter and enough dirt under my fingernails to keep the NHS busy for weeks. Oh, and a hot tub. The finds were incredible, ranging from Roman to medieval, lead to gold. Some people absolutely smashed it, and I came away with a couple of bucket-listers of my own: a William III shilling with detail and a Pilgrims’ Ampulla. Two finds that have made me very happy indeed! A massive thank you to @minelabdetecting @minelabuk for being absolute legends, and to @coiltubs for the hot tub. Because nothing says serious metal detecting expedition quite like sitting in a hot tub in the middle of a field in October with one of your best mates, surrounded by people who get excited about rusty bits of metal. Honestly, that wasn’t on my 2026 bingo card. Weekends like this are what it’s all about. The finds are brilliant, but the people, the laughs and the memories are what make it special. Until next time, you bunch of absolute legends. @cmdetectors @minelabuk @minelabdetecting #teamCMD #teamminelab by @thementaldetector
What a first detecting day at Minelab500! It’s funny, because I never travel to rallies expecting to find anything. I go to see these people. People who live miles away, but who are brought together by the same passion, the same connection and, let’s be honest, a shared obsession with digging holes and getting ridiculously excited about bits of metal. Despite only getting together as a group a handful of times a year, it’s always as if we only saw each other yesterday. And for that, I’ll be forever grateful. Because THAT is what this hobby is really about. The finds may be few and far between, but it’s the people, the friendships and the memories made along the way that make it so special. ‼️VISIT THE LINK IN MY BIO OR CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE. After seeing the post from @emloveoldstuff, I remembered that I found a very similar Jetton quite a few years ago, early on in my detecting journey. In fact, it’s still my only one. Being new and completely naïve to the hobby at the time, I never did much research into it. One thing I did know was not to attack it with a wire brush, so I’m pretty sure it’s still in much the same condition as when it came out of the ground! For anyone unfamiliar with them, Jettons were small brass tokens used across Europe from around the 13th to 17th centuries. They were originally used as counting counters for calculations on counting boards before widespread use of written arithmetic, although some were later used as gaming pieces or trade tokens. The closest match I’ve found is a Rechenmeister Jetton. These were commonly produced in places such as Nuremberg during the 1500s and 1600s. However, the opposite side to the alphabet appears to be different. Does anyone recognise this particular design or have any ideas who the maker might be? I’d love to finally put a name and date to a find that’s been sitting in my collection for years! ‼️VISIT THE LINK IN MY BIO OR CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE. I don’t think I’ve ever properly introduced myself. So, for those who’ve followed me for a while and still have no idea who I am, and for anyone new who’s accidentally ended up here, hello, I’m … Name: Karl Age: Turning 40 this year (apparently that happened faster than expected) Job: Graphic designer for 20+ years. I spend my weekdays moving pixels around and eating crayons. Detecting experience: Detectorist for 10 years, based in Lancashire. Affiliated with: @cmdetectors & @minelabdetecting Extra stuff: Co-founded @wearehummingbird, a mental health non-profit created after the tragic loss of a close friend to suicide. More extra stuff: Co-founder of @thehistorydetectors, where we take metal detecting into schools and let children discover that history is far more exciting when you can dig bits of it up. Fun fact: It took me nearly FIVE YEARS to find my first hammered coin. Proof that persistence is just stubbornness with better marketing. Other achievements include digging approximately 47,000 pieces of scrap metal, enough lead to build a small Victorian village, and becoming irrationally excited over objects that most normal people would describe as “a bit of old metal.” And that’s all you’re getting. A magician never reveals his secrets, and a detectorist never reveals his permissions. ‼️VISIT THE LINK IN MY BIO OR CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE. Went out on a group dig today with a club I used to detect with all the time in my early years. The weather was perfect, but the finds were few and far between. Just when it looked like the highlight of the day was going to be a decent bacon sandwich, I unearthed this lovely Irish sweetheart brooch, which I believe dates to the Victorian period. Sweetheart brooches were often given as tokens of affection and remembrance, particularly by soldiers to their wives, sweethearts or family members. Many featured national symbols, regimental emblems or sentimental designs, making them both jewellery and keepsakes. What makes this one even more special is that it’s only my second ever piece of gold in 10 years of detecting. That’s roughly one gold find every five years, so at this rate I’ll be rich by 2076. Still, I’ll happily call that a win. The @minelabdetecting Manticore continues to find the good stuff when I least expect it. ‼️VISIT THE LINK IN MY BIO OR CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE. This little thing has been sat in my ‘to sort’ box for ages. I always dismissed it as “some random bit of junk” — maybe a lid, maybe a fitting, maybe something from an old shed that had a rough life. Still, I kept it because the design looked too good to throw away. Turns out my hoarding instincts finally paid off… It’s actually a belt slider dating somewhere between the 1500s–1700s. Belt sliders were used to secure and adjust belts or straps, often on clothing, sword belts, or military gear. Basically the Tudor/Stuart equivalent of trying to stop your trousers falling down. Moral of the story: always check your junk. One man’s scrap metal is another man’s 400-year-old fashion accessory. ‼️VISIT THE LINK IN MY BIO OR CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE. My daughter Norah and I recently visited Astley Hall in Chorley, my original hometown, a place I hadn’t been since childhood. As an adult, I was able to appreciate it more, including the original Tudor-framed courtyard and carved furniture, the tapestry depicting Jason and the Golden Fleece, and the decorative plaster ceilings from the 1800s. In July, after some restoration work on the wattle and daub walls is completed, we plan to return to see what we missed. Additionally, I discovered that the car park was originally a Bronze Age burial site. ‼️VISIT THE LINK IN MY BIO OR CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE. First time out today for the first time in a while. The weather was on our side. I didn’t find too much; a few toasted coins and musket balls but I managed to winkle out a bit of silver (spoon bowl) and a ladies hem weight. I wonder what she was up to in that field when it fell off? Maybe eating some soup with the silver spoon! ‼️VISIT THE LINK IN MY BIO OR CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE.
