IN CONVERSATION with @robsonrakarchitects On Thursday night at Lawson Flats, we were delighted to welcome Kathryn Robson and Chris Rak, founders of Melbourne-based architecture and interior design practice Robson Rak, to celebrate the launch of their first book, Permanent Residence, published by Thames & Hudson. As part of our In Conversation series, the audience was treated to a refreshingly raw and honest Q&A talking through the book, their practice and all things design. For more than two decades, Kathryn and Chris have developed a body of work that is distinctly their own. Their projects bring architecture and interiors together with remarkable clarity. Creating spaces that feel considered and sophisticated, but also deeply personal and genuinely liveable. There is a quiet confidence to Robson Rak’s work that we have long admired. Their interiors are refined without feeling overly resolved; restrained, but never austere. Material, texture, art, furniture and objects are layered with an extraordinary sensitivity, while craftsmanship and detail reveal themselves gradually rather than demanding attention. Perhaps most importantly, these are homes designed around the people who inhabit them. Rather than pursuing a particular aesthetic or moment in time, Kathryn and Chris create spaces with longevity. Crafting homes that are intended to evolve, acquire patina and become richer through the lives lived within them. That philosophy feels masterfully captured in Permanent Residence. The book brings together more than twenty years of Robson Rak’s residential work and offers us the opportunity not simply to look at a collection of beautiful houses, but to understand some of the thinking, relationships and creative principles behind them. Permanent Residence is a book about the home and how it shapes us. For Kathryn and Chris, it’s also a story about family, creativity, establishing roots and what they describe as the privilege of leaving their design mark on the city of Melbourne. Jazz Kissa Available Now. Jazz Kissa: The Soul of Japanese Listening Culture, is an immersive photographic exploration of Japan’s iconic jazz cafés, known as Jazz Kissa. The book is the result of over fifteen years of dedicated work by photographer and cultural historian Katsumasa Kusunose, who has meticulously documented these intimate spaces and the people who keep their spirit alive. The first cafés dedicated to playing recorded jazz opened in Japan in the late 1920s, reflecting the country’s early fascination with Western culture and music. Although many closed during World War II, the post-war period saw Jazz Kissa return in even greater numbers, spreading across Japan as quiet sanctuaries for dedicated listening. These spaces preserve an almost spiritual relationship with sound – slow, immersive, and deeply intentional – in a world where music has become increasingly disposable and attention fragmented. With a cover inspired by the texture of Altec A7 speakers and wrapped in a traditional OBI strip, Jazz Kissa is both a cultural document and a beautiful object in its own right.
