Hi everyone! Welcome to the Munch Manual! 🥂🫶

My name is Em and I’m about to embark on a journey trying new foods and drinks, as well as things that I know I like, around different cafes, bars and restaurants in my area.

I’m a born and raised country girl from a small town in the heart of the central wheatbelt of Western Australia 🌾🐑🌻

Different cuisines and cultures was quite out of reach for me as a farm kid. It’s not often you find a Japanese restaurant in a country town. Naturally, I became quite a fussy eater…

As I got older I went to boarding school in Perth. I’ll be honest, I struggled with trying new foods. To me, a lot of it felt quite foreign.

I’m 20 now, permanently living in Perth and proud to say that I have started to branch out and try new things, and have been shocked that I actually like things that I was adamant I never would (for example, matcha, I used to HATE on that drink🤦‍♀️)

I loved growing up in the country. I still love my home on the farm and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Maybe I was a little sheltered in the food department for a while but that just means I’m one of the lucky ones who gets to try new food and drink as an adult who can appreciate it more! 🍵🍇🥂🧀🍹🍓✨ by @themunchmanual_

Side Piece Deli - Shenton Road, Swanbourne
🍓🥯🥐🍳🍵

If you’re looking for a cute brunch spot, Side Piece Deli in Swanbourne is a go to.

Their breakfast and lunch menu nails the classics like your sandos and bagels, but they also have rotating food and drinks specials which change every couple of months or so, keeping you in the loop with the changing seasons.

If you’re a matcha lover, I’ve had so many matchas from here and each flavour I’ve tried has never let me down. Highly recommend. And the courtyard seating is super cute!

Le Rebelle - Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley
🥗🥩🍷🦪🧀

If you’re looking for a french inspired neighbourhood bar and bistro, you have to try Le Rebelle!

We started our night off with the La Delizia burrata, that was served with a cauliflower puree and parsnips, as well as the steak tartare and frites. The burrata and cauliflower is such an underrated combo, this dish quite literally melts in your mouth.

For mains we ordered the WA fillet steak, and the glazed Wagin duck and frites, as well as a serve of the roast pumpkin salad on the side for some freshness. It’s safe to say you get your moneys worth. We did not leave feeling hungry, the portion sizes are delightfully larger than you’d expect!

We also popped into Le Rebelles sibling venue Bar Rogue just down the road in Highgate before dinner for a quick drink and a snack. This place is such a hidden gem! Be sure to check it out too!

Kith Eatery - Abedare Road, Nedlands
🍝🍹🌤️🍋‍🟩🍊

Your favourite Perth neighbourhood eatery has just started Aperitive Afternoons!

To start we shared the Tuna Crudo and the Potato Cakes with Raw Beef. Now that I’ve become quite fond of raw meat, I really enjoyed these dishes. The tuna was super delicate and fresh, and the beef was full of flavour. I’ve also never had a crispier potato cake than these ones.

For main we shared the Baked Pipe Rigate Alla Gin, and the Frites and Aioli. Portion wise, I was surprised at how big of a serve the pipe rigate was. No complaints though as it was perfect. And of course you can never go wrong with some frites.

Such a cute date night spot and perfect for a girls night catch up. I also felt that everything was fairly affordable for the quality you get. I will definitely be back!

Napier Quarter, Fitzroy - Melbourne
🍅🥂🥖🍸🌳

Located on one of the oldest suburbs in Melbourne sits Napier Quarter, a neighbourhood wine bar and guesthouse, serving stunning dishes and pouring crisp wines.

We ordered a bunch of share plates including the Tuna Crudo, Focaccia, Prosciutto and the Heirloom Tomatoes.

I’ve always been sceptical of raw fish, but I felt it was time I gave it a go and I have to say it’s a new favourite. The Focaccia was served fresh from the oven along side an olive oil and agrodolce blend. I can never complain with some prosciutto, it was perfect, and the heirloom tomatoes were delicious!

In the cooler months, the venue provides outdoor with heating which is great, however I can imagine on a summer afternoon, the outdoor seating here would be such a wholesome vibe! Can’t wait to come back!

Marion Wine Bar - Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
🥩🥗🍷🍽️🌶️🍝

If you want fine dining at a reasonable price you have to check out Marion Wine Bar when you are in Melbourne. The meals are top quality, the service is exceptional and the venue is beautiful. When we dined, we were sat up near the kitchen which meant we were able to watch our meals being made. This was such a cool experience!

We ordered the House Flat Bread and the Shishito Peppers to start off with. THE BEST flat bread I have ever had. I could have eaten 5. It’s a no brainer, you have to order it. We actually weren’t sure what to expect with the peppers when we ordered them, however we were not disappointed. They were packed with flavour, literally.

For mains we ordered the Grilled O’Connor Sirloin, the Baked Pipe Rigate, and the Butter Lettuce Salad on the side. All components were perfect. The sirloin was cooked to perfection and the leaks it was served with were delicious. The Rigate was so fresh, definitely handmade with a lot of love and my personal favourite. And although I’m not a huge fan of lettuce, this salad was divine.

Marion is 5 ⭐️’s in my opinion. I will definitely be back!

Lenny’s Wine Room - Lennox Street, Richmond
🍐🍷🥂🍹🥖

If you’re looking for a little pre drinks place before an AFL game at the MCG, Lenny’s Wine Room is about a 15 minute walk from the stadium. It’s a cozy spot with Aperitivo Hour running from 4-6pm Mondays to Thursdays.

We ordered a few little bites to eat before our game, including the sourdough, burrata, and prosciutto. Their share snacks range from $7-$25 with most items being around $16. This is the perfect spot if you are a small group wanting to try a few bites and not spend a fortune in the process!

Revival Studios - Subiaco

Barber x matcha x clothing store x coffee x pastries. Honestly what more could you really want.

I think this could be my new favourite hangout spot. This place is such a vibe and they make the matcha properly right in front of you! Don’t be surprised if you see me here 24/7.

Lotus, The Beaufort - Highgate
🌶️🥟🍚🥘🍤🥢

Lotus is a modern Southeast Asian inspired restaurant located under The Beaufort, serving a variety of bold share style dishes.

It’s safe to say we ordered a fair spread! We picked mostly small and medium dishes and shared them all between the four of us.

I tried Sashimi! Definitely a first for me as I’m scared about the whole raw fish thing! Surprisingly though I actually didn’t mind it…

My other personal favourites would have to be the steamed prawn dumplings, the smashed pork and prawn dim sum, the malay fried popcorn chicken and of course the vegetarian fried rice.

The venue here is stunning with their ambient pendant lighting, and is definitely a venue that can accommodate to larger groups if that’s the vibe you are going for!

Arrival Hall - Aberdeen Street, Northbridge
🍵🍓🌿🥯☀️

Arrival Hall is a design store and neighbourhood cafe located on Aberdeen Street in Northbridge, that has a seasonally changing menu. They have recently just come out with their Summer Edition Iced Drinks menu which I’m excited to slowly make my way through!

I have been coming to Arrival Hall for about three years now and I can confidently say it is my favourite breakfast/lunch spot in Perth. It is a stunning venue which provides both indoor and outdoor seating.

For the design lovers, their showroom is filled with beautiful pieces from various places all around the world.

Today I felt like something sweet so I ordered the Pandan Crumpets with Coconut Jam and an Iced Strawberry Matcha (Arrival is actually where my love for matcha originated!) As someone who is not much of an extreme sweet tooth myself, this gorgeous dish was the perfect amount of sweetness for me. Another personal favourite of mine is the Brunch Bagel which is practically BURSTING with flavours.

It’s always a 10/10 at Arrival!

Balthazar Restaurant - The Esplanade, Perth
🍇🥖🥃🍾🍹🫒

Situated under ‘Lawsons’ apartments in Perth is a moody and polished European inspired restaurant called Balthazar. This restaurant focuses on creating dishes from appetising local produce.

My palate got a work out last night! We started off with some olives and bread with house butter. May I just say this butter was absolutely incredible.

For our entrees we ordered the caramelised onion tartlet, the wagyu beef tartare and a side of duck fat potatoes which were the crispiest, tastiest duck fat potatoes infused with a generous amount of garlic and rosemary.

To finish off our meals, we ordered the duck breast and the kangaroo. Both meals were perfect! You could tell that they were cooked with a whole lot of love 🥰 The duck breast had a sweeter undertone to it with grape and almond, and also came served with a sweet, jammy type of sauce. The kangaroo literally melted in your mouth, along with the creamy goats curd and macadamia blend.

And I can’t forget to mention, the ‘sunrise sour’ is by far THE BEST cocktail I have had in Perth. Bonus points too because it is so pretty! 🌺

Overall, a bit more on the pricier side but it is SO worth it! The portion sizes were far from lacking so we left with extremely full bellys, and my palate has very much expanded! Balthazar is such a moody little venue, perfect for a special occasion or a surprise date night! I can’t wait to come again and try the pork belly!

Powells Fromagerie and Wine Bar - Electric Lane, Leederville
🫒🍹🧀🌶️🍯

Powells is a cosy wine bar located in Electric Lane in Leederville. Tucked away from the busy streets, this cosy wine bar and cheese delicatessen is filled with disco balls and yummy share plates.

We ordered a couple of share plates, including the prosciutto and manchego croquettes (my personal favourite), as well as the whole baked brie which was absolutely delicious. We also ordered some Giardiniera (pickled veggies) that are pickled in house at Powells.

Between 4 of us, the pricing was in my opinion fairly friendly for a wine bar which was a bonus. And an extra 10 points for Powells as they have a book club for the book lovers!

Next time we come, we will be trying the arancini!
