Q: What’s the last museum you visited?

When I asked y’all what else you wanted to see on this page (and thank you for your helpful responses!!), a lot of you said you wanted to learn more about what specifically I do and I realized I’ve never actually done a Museum Education FAQs, so I thought I’d start with that.

Let me know if you have other questions for me or if there’s other type of content you’d like to see!

✵ 𝕄𝕪 𝕎𝕀ℙ ✵

Hello hello!! One of my goals for 2026 is to be better about posting about my novel on here, so I thought what better way to start than to make a little info post about it. I submitted 4 queries in 2025 (mostly for practice) and received a super kind rejection, so I am going into 2026 feeling fresh and ready to go.

This book has been with me for about fifteen years in many different forms. I’ve been writing it for about eight now, and I think I’m on draft nine? It has been through so many partial readers, alpha readers, and beta readers. And now it’s querying time!

I once had a published author tell me, “good ideas are subjective. The ideas worth telling are the ones that won’t leave you alone.” And boy does this one fall into that category. It has kept me awake at night, demanding for certain scenes to be written in that exact moment. Characters I didn’t know about have burst into my brain with a lot to say.

This story is very near and dear to my heart, not just because it’s my first, but because it’s been with me through so much, takes place in one of my favorite places on the planet (yes, it’s Williamsburg!), and revolves around my favorite historical subject - the American Revolution. I love talking about it, and I feel like it’s incredibly misunderstood as a historical event, so while I’m hoping you fall in love with my characters and their journeys, I’m also hoping this book sends you down historical rabbit hole and leaves you with a lot of questions (and maybe makes you want to visit a museum or two!).

Anywayyyyy, I’ll get off my soapbox now, but here’s hoping 2026 is a good year for this book. With the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, I feel like it’s time!

Thanks for following along!

xx,
Maddie

✵ 𝕄𝕦𝕤𝕖𝕦𝕞 𝕄𝕠𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕪 ✵

Happy Museum Monday! Doing something a little bit different this week for museum Monday. Since starting this account, I’ve had so many people reach out to me asking about how I got into museums, if I have any advice, etc., and that brings me so much joy! I know how difficult it can be getting into museums, so I am always happy to help!

That being said, I thought I’d create a little museum careers infographic. This is most definitely not exhaustive (I didn’t even get into museums that have libraries, the role of historians/academics, etc.) and there is so much nuance in museums, but I thought it would be a good place to start!

As always, let me know if you have any questions!

✵ Spend the Day with Me✵

Q: What country is at the top of your bucket list?

I am honestly embarrassed to admit that Belgium was never really on my travel list. However, I had a free weekend in my travels, and @historyonholiday recommended I go to Belgium! I am SO glad I did.

I took the train from Paris to Bruges which was a very each journey that took me under four hours. I spent the weekend in Bruges with a day trip to Ghent (shoutout to my INCREDIBLE hotel @ ). I was solo traveling this bit of my journey and I felt totally safe, which has been my biggest concern at the start of this.

I am so grateful to @visitflanders, @visitbruges, and @visitgent for giving me such helpful tourist information and passes to their cities’ stunning museums so I could make the most out of my weekend.

Honestly, my only regret is I didn’t give myself enough time! I can’t wait to go back.

[disclaimer: with the collaboration of @visitflanders, I was gifted a pass from @visitbruges and @visitgent that allowed me to visit museums in the cities for free. Some of those museums are posted here]

I’m grateful they kept going; I’m grateful they fought for the future; I’m grateful they kept records; I’m grateful they made beautiful things; and I’m so unbelievably grateful that I get to walk in their footsteps, even if I never know them.

✵ Guernsey ✵

Q: Have you ever been to Guernsey?

For a small island in the English Channel, Guernsey has a truly incredible history of resilience and strength. In 1940, they were invaded by Nazi Germany by whom they were occupied for almost five years.

It is in that setting that the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I highly recommend both the book and the movie! So I thought I’d share some of my favorite quotes and photos of the island. As an American, this was a part of WWII history I didn’t learn - I didn’t know any part of the UK was invaded - but it’s a crucial part of the story.

I visited Guernsey once before but somehow it was more beautiful than I remembered. It’s actually one of my favorite places in the UK, and, in my humble opinion, should be on everyone’s bucket list. It’s a beautiful island full of rich history and such lovely people.

and surprisingly, it has nothing to do with Faramir!

I’ve wanted a Lord of the Rings tattoo for SO LONG but always wavered on what exactly to get. When I had this concept idea a few months ago, I knew this was it but I had no idea how to make it a reality. Thankfully, the INCREDIBLE @travassoslari knew exactly what to do and made the tattoo just spectacular. This is my third tattoo and definitely my best tattoo experience thus far (and not just because it was in Scotland). Larissa was so warm, thoughtful, and insanely talented. The entire experience was so easy. I cannot thank her or recommend her enough.

Now to decide what I want next!

I stg they had a great time

All jokes aside though we had the best morning at the Ben Franklin House (@benjaminfranklinhouse), located just off of Trafalgar Square in London, England! This home, where Franklin lived for over 15 years prior to the American Revolution, is the only one of Franklin’s homes still standing today.

We got the best tour and had a wonderful time not only learning about Franklin but more about London in the eighteenth century. Definitely a hidden gem that should be on your bucket list.

✵ Spend the Weekend With Me ✵

Q: What did you do this weekend?

Instead of doing a giant trip dump, I thought it would be more fun some more individual posts about certain places I visited. First up is Paris. I know I didn’t hit it all (or even come close), but it was a truly lovely weekend, and I cannot wait to go back. Visiting the Louvre and the Palais Garnier is not something I will soon forget. And it was SO heartwarming to see Notre Dame looking so stunning.

✵ Founding Mothers ✵

Q: Which Founding Mother are you picking?

Y’all like the founding fathers recs so, as promised, here are founding mothers! As I said in my previous post, I do have plans to make this a series (unknown founding heroes, etc.) because as much as I love talking about the founders as a museum educator, there are a loooooot more people I like talking about.

Stay tuned!

(Disclaimer: I have not read all these books, but I tried to match the vibes)

What museum jargon have you run into?

Time for another episode of Museum Memos, this time about common phrases you’ll hear in the museum world!

Today we’re talking about mission & interpretation. For mission, I featured those of: @lincolnscottage, @librarycongress, & @adlerplanet

The nation builders featured under character interpretation are from @colonialwmsburg

As always, let me know if you have questions!
