Two years ago, Slurp & Socialize started with one person unpacking a coffee shipment and thinking, why not get everyone in a room together.

This year we did it again. Bigger.

Coffee from across the Gulf, nearly 300 people, and a lot of cupping spoons working overtime.

I don’t think twice about how much coffee I drink. But almost everyone around me has a story about coffee turning on them at some point.

Turns out most of what we’ve been taught to fear about it doesn’t hold up.

I broke down what’s actually in your cup, why it might be one of the better things you do for your heart, and why the safe caffeine limit is a lot higher than most people think.

Big thank you to @garfieldmokha for the perspective that shaped a chunk of this. His piece on coffee as a functional beverage is what pushed me to dig into the research properly.

Came for a coffee to go, ended up staying instead.

@crossdubai is incredible. The setup is such that it makes you want to slow down.

Since it’s about coffee, the flat white was faultless: Brazil, sweet, balanced and creamy, with milk that blended perfectly. Exactly how I like it.

Some people you’re just happy to see win.

@wilden_pretorius is one of them. I’ve known him since his @archers.ae days, and he’s always been generous, kind and fun to be around. He placed 2nd at Coffee in Good Spirits, and instead of stopping there, he went to Rwanda and started @ubuntu_coffee_co.

Last week at @goldfood.ae, I finally got to taste what he’s been building, and I understood why he placed 2nd for the Special processes category in @bestofrwanda2026.

Ubuntu means “I am because we are.” After seeing his journey up close, I believe the best part is yet to come.

Spoiler alert for anyone going through this: these coffees will raise your standards of what coffee should taste like, and everything else might just disappoint you after this.

So, yesterday I got to be part of a private session at @by_cypher to cup Legends of Excellence coffees, a week before they fly to Tokyo for auction.

What are Legends of Excellence, you ask? I had the same question. It is an elite specialty coffee program and charity auction created by the @allianceforcoffeeexcellence to honor coffees from producers who have already proven themselves at Cup of Excellence time and time again.

Many of the farms on this table are multiple time finalists and winners. You could taste it. Every single cup was good, and that never happens on a cupping table.

Some of my favourites on the table: Finca El Morita Geisha Washed, Finca Santa Rosa Pacamara Honey, and Finca La Salsa, the one CYPHER won themselves at auction.

Rare to taste coffees like this before the rest of the world gets a chance to bid on them. All credit goes to CYPHER for this one.
