Reverend Dr. Walter Womack, a dedicated faith leader and advocate for social change, has passed away, the Memphis branch of the NAACP confirmed Wednesday.

As pastor of Faithful Baptist Church and president of the Memphis chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Dr. Womack was a tireless force for good. He worked to reduce youth violence, create mentorship programs, and uplift his community.

“We’re going to have to put boots on the ground and engage our young people,” he urged in 2021 as violence surged in Memphis. His unwavering commitment to change made him a beacon of hope for many.

Faith leaders across the city are mourning his loss, remembering his passion for justice and dedication to South Memphis.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Memphis Launches Innovate Xcelerate to Empower Diverse Entrepreneurs

Memphis’ entrepreneurial landscape is getting a major boost with Innovate Xcelerate, a new program designed to cultivate a diverse pipeline of innovative business owners. Spearheaded by Epicenter, the city’s startup hub, the initiative offers funding, mentorship, corporate connections, and essential resources to help entrepreneurs thrive—not just survive.

“We realized that Memphis has undervalued the talent in many of our communities, and Innovate Xcelerate is designed to apply those lessons,” said Choya Johnson, Epicenter’s entrepreneurial programs specialist.

Backed by a $380,000 grant from the MassMutual Foundation, the two-year program kicked off on February 7 with a design thinking workshop. Up next: a Hackathon (March 7–9) led by CodeCrew, known for training underrepresented tech talent.

The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) has announced the first round of recipients for its inaugural Fatherhood Grant Program, a $5 million initiative supporting organizations that empower fathers across the state.

From over 120 applicants, 10 public, private, and nonprofit organizations were selected, including Agape Child & Family Services Inc. and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis, both serving Shelby County.

TDHS Commissioner Clarence H. Carter emphasized the program’s goal: “Fathers are essential to the development, health, and well-being of their children, families, and all of Tennessee.”

The funding will support services such as mentorship, co-parenting assistance, skill-building workshops, and financial literacy training.

While Memphis and Tennessee continue to push toward progress, some groups are trying to pull us backward with hate-filled rhetoric. Recently, flyers from white supremacist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan, surfaced in various cities across the state, sparking outrage and calls for action. The NAACP Memphis stands firm in its commitment to fight racism and hate, as President Kermit Moore states, 'We will not stand by idly.' Law enforcement is actively investigating, and the community is uniting to reject this hate, standing strong in support of immigrants and diversity. Together, we rise above hatred and build a stronger, more united community."
