Story Coming Soon.

When you hear the name Zanzibar, what comes to mind?
For some people, itโ€™s the beaches. For others, itโ€™s the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, the resorts, and the idea of an island getaway.
But Zanzibar has a story that stretches far beyond its coastline.
For centuries, this archipelago off the coast of East Africa has been a meeting point for people, cultures, and trade routes connecting Africa to the wider Indian Ocean world.
Its history is one of cultural exchange, economic ambition, and extraordinary human movement. Itโ€™s also a history marked by slavery, exploitation, and the struggle for political independence.
I wanted to understand some of that history, but I also wanted to experience the culture that exists today.
So, I travelled through Zanzibar, exploring its historic streets, learning about its agricultural heritage, getting closer to its natural environment, and spending time discovering the food and traditions of the Swahili coast.
This wasnโ€™t simply about seeing a new place.
It was about understanding what makes it what it is.
And to do that, I had to start with a question.
What exactly is Zanzibar, and how does it fit into the larger story of Tanzania? taken in Zanzibar, Tanzania by @thenomadicrasta

Zanzibar Pizza at Forodhani Gardens, Stone Town ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ

Zanzibar pizza is one of the islandโ€™s most famous street foods, found at the lively Forodhani Gardens night market.

Despite its name, it isnโ€™t traditional Italian pizza. Itโ€™s made by stretching thin wheat dough, filling it with ingredients such as minced meat, egg, onion, tomato, and cheese, then folding it into a square parcel and frying it on a hot griddle until golden. by @thenomadicrasta

Located in Zanzibar, Jozani Forest is a beautiful stretch of tropical forest and part of Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park. It is best known as the home of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a rare species found naturally only on this island.

With their distinctive black, white and reddish-brown coats, these monkeys move freely through the trees, offering visitors a chance to observe them in their natural habitat.

Beyond the monkeys, the forest is rich in biodiversity, with unique plants, wildlife and mangrove ecosystems that make it an important part of Zanzibarโ€™s natural heritage. by @thenomadicrasta

The Swahili dhow has been part of East Africaโ€™s coastal life for centuries. These traditional sailing vessels date back over a thousand years, connecting the Swahili coast with Arabia, Persia, India, and beyond through Indian Ocean trade.

Originally powered by the wind and fitted with distinctive triangular sails, dhows carried goods such as spices, ivory, timber, and textiles across the ocean. They helped shape the Swahili culture itself, bringing together African, Arab, and Asian influences through centuries of trade, migration, and cultural exchange.

Today, dhows remain an important part of coastal heritage in places like Zanzibar, Kenya, and Tanzania. While many are now used for fishing, transport, and sunset cruises, they remain a living reminder of the Indian Oceanโ€™s rich maritime history. by @thenomadicrasta

We spent time in a Swahili home learning to prepare chapati, coconut stew, and pilau. What began as a cooking experience became a lesson in history.

Swahili cuisine reflects centuries of interaction between African communities and the wider Indian Ocean world, with influences from South Asia and beyond.

Over time, these traditions blended with local ingredients and cooking methods to create a food culture uniquely rooted in the Swahili coast. taken in Zanzibar, Tanzania by @thenomadicrasta

Tunza Diani. ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒฟ

One coast. Many hands. One shared responsibility.

From the beach to the reef, Tunza Diani brought people together for a day of action, teamwork, and care for our coastline. Hosted by Safari Beach Hotel, alongside our partners, it was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together for our environment. ๐Ÿ’š

To everyone who showed up, got involved, and played a part, thank you. This is what caring for our coast looks like.

Letโ€™s keep the momentum going. Tunza Pwani. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’š
