When does an independent firearm review become corporate advertising?

That question is becoming increasingly important as YouTube tightens its rules governing firearm-related content and manufacturer-supported videos.

YouTube’s updated branded-content policy prohibits content featuring firearms or ammunition when a creator receives something of value from a brand partner. Meanwhile, creators may have disclosure obligations when they receive payment, free products or other benefits.

But not every relationship is the same.

A creator may purchase a firearm, borrow one for testing, receive a sample or enter into a paid sponsorship. Providing access to a product does not necessarily mean a manufacturer controls the review or its conclusions.

These distinctions are also becoming increasingly important in litigation, where relationships between firearm manufacturers and independent creators are being examined as part of “marketing” and “advertising” claims.

The immediate impact is greater uncertainty for creators, manufacturers and viewers seeking independent firearm product coverage.

Transparency should clarify who paid for or supplied a product. It should not erase the distinction between a candid review and an advertisement.

Planning for the future is an important part of responsible firearm ownership.

Project ChildSafe®, a program of NSSF®, is partnering with Slingit to help individuals and families navigate inherited firearm collections with greater clarity and confidence.

Slingit helps families identify and understand the value of firearms, document collections for estate purposes and make informed decisions about what comes next.

Through the partnership, individuals also have the option to designate @projchildsafe as an intended beneficiary of proceeds from their collection. Contributions directly support nationwide firearm safety education and secure storage resources.

Thoughtful planning today can help families responsibly manage firearm collections while supporting a safer future.

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones has created a dedicated unit to investigate and bring civil enforcement actions against firearm industry businesses under the Commonwealth’s new firearm industry liability law.

The Firearms Accountability & Industry Responsibility, or FAIR, Unit will enforce Virginia’s Firearm Industry Standards of Responsible Conduct, enacted through HB 21 and SB 27.

The law requires firearm manufacturers, distributors, importers, marketers and retailers to implement “reasonable controls” regarding their products and gives the attorney general and local government attorneys authority to pursue civil actions for alleged violations.

NSSF has raised concerns about these standards and similar laws in other states, including how they interact with protections provided by the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.

NSSF is already challenging similar “reasonable controls” laws in New Jersey and Maryland. The Third Circuit recently allowed NSSF’s New Jersey challenge to move forward, although the court did not decide the merits of the case.

Now, attention turns to how Virginia’s FAIR Unit will exercise its investigative and enforcement authority.

NSSF will be watching closely and has stated it is prepared to challenge enforcement it believes violates the Constitution or is preempted by federal law.

The NSSF and the firearm industry are working hard to reduce the number of individuals who, during a period of despair, take their own lives.

We know that more than half of all firearm-related deaths each year are self-inflicted. We also know that if a person receives help at the right time, they can, in many cases, go on to live fulfilling lives.

We also know that making firearms or other means harder to access during a crisis can save lives.

This is why we’ve teamed up with the @‌afspnational and the U.S. @‌deptvetaffairs to create safety resources for industry members and the firearm-owning community, including veterans and active military.

Talking more openly about suicide prevention, mental health and life challenges helps reduce stigma and reminds the firearm-owning community to support one another, check in on friends and family and reach out when someone may need help.

New research reinforces a principle the firearm industry has emphasized for decades: education and training matter when it comes to safe and responsible firearm storage.

A newly published study found that state-level secure firearm storage laws had little influence on whether gun owners used secure storage mechanisms. Instead, firearm safety training was the strongest predictor of secure storage.

Gun owners who received both formal and informal safety training were more than six times as likely to securely store their firearms compared to those who were untrained. The study also found that nearly two in three gun owners surveyed reported using a gun lock or safe when their firearms were not in use.

Those findings reinforce NSSF’s long-standing focus on proactive education through Real Solutions. Safer Communities® and Project ChildSafe®, which provides firearm safety education and secure storage resources to communities across the country.

Education. Training. Trusted resources. These are important tools for encouraging safe and responsible firearm ownership.

The NSSF noted in January that 2026 could be the “Year of the Suppressor,” and the latest numbers suggest that prediction is proving accurate. ✅

@atfhq data provided to NSSF shows more than 1.1 million suppressor applications were submitted from January through August, with 1 million approved.

These figures include both Form 1 applications to manufacture suppressors and Form 4 applications to possess them individually or through a trust.

August 2026 NFA NICS checks show a 201.6% increase over August 2025, reaching 185,744 compared to 61,594 last year.

With a few months of purchasing data still left to track, this year’s figures point to a major increase in interest around NFA-regulated products.

Industry experts expect suppressors to continue gaining traction among hunters, recreational shooters and first-time buyers, while advances in technology are producing lighter, quieter and more specialized products.

For dealers, the opportunity goes beyond inventory. Retailers who invest in employee training, customer education, digital marketing and suppressor-focused sales strategies may be best positioned to succeed as the category continues to expand.

The suppressor market is evolving quickly, and the businesses that adapt could be the biggest winners.

“The biggest challenge is uncertainty—plain and simple.”

Steve Minneman, CEO of MTM Case-Gard, shares how the company’s long history and loyal customer base continue to guide its direction today. He emphasizes that durability and reliability are at the core of their products, and that many customers return because the gear they bought years ago is still going strong. Minneman also discusses the importance of consistent manufacturing processes and a hands‑on approach to quality. He notes that staying family‑run helps them remain focused and adaptable without unnecessary complexity. His comments reflect a philosophy built on stability, trust and long‑term relationships with the people who use their products.

We ask him:

➣ What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the industry in the next five years?
➣ What opportunities do you see?
➣ When you get up in the morning, what gets you excited about working in the industry?
➣ How will you meet the expectations of your customers?
➣ In a very competitive world, how does MTM Case-Gard stay ahead of the pack?
➣ The Case-Gard R-50 Series of ammo boxes has been around for over 50 years. Why has it lasted?
➣ How do you develop new products? Does customer input matter?

Traveling with a firearm? Know the rules before getting into a rideshare or robotaxi.

Waymo’s Terms of Service explicitly prohibit passengers from carrying weapons, including firearms, in its driverless vehicles. Its Rider Rules describe the restriction as a “zero tolerance policy.”

That is important information for lawful gun owners who carry concealed or travel with firearms as driverless transportation services continue expanding across the country.

Waymo vehicles also use interior cameras and microphones, and the company states its in-cabin cameras are recording. Recent incidents have shown that suspected violations inside a vehicle can result in the trip being stopped and law enforcement being contacted.

Private transportation companies can establish their own Terms of Service. Lawful firearm owners should understand those policies, along with applicable state and local laws, before choosing how they travel.

Know the rules before you ride and choose a transportation option that fits your needs.

Illinois lawmakers are pushing legislation that would make lawful firearm manufacturers pay costs the state attributes to firearm-related injuries and deaths, including harms resulting from the criminal misuse of firearms.

House Bill 3320 and Senate Bill 2279, known as the RIFL Act, would establish a state licensing system for firearm manufacturers and tie licensing fees to costs associated with firearm injuries and deaths.

Under the proposal, manufacturers would be required to obtain a state license to operate in Illinois, while retailers could be prohibited from selling firearms produced by manufacturers without a license. Proposed amendments would expand the regulatory structure and determine manufacturer fees based partly on firearms recovered in connection with injuries or deaths.

The result could be higher costs for manufacturers based on what happens to lawfully made firearms after they leave their control.

HB 3320 and SB 2279 remain pending and neither has passed its chamber. For firearm manufacturers, retailers and Illinois gun owners, the proposal remains one to watch.
