NAF ‘26 | THE 8TH BAG

This week was so much more than a festival.
To be an artist is to constantly seek out art, and to find yourself in the middle of it. Makhanda, marking my first time in the Eastern Cape and at the National Arts Festival, delivered so much more than I could have expected.

The 8th Bag is by far the best creative process I have ever been a part of. Sungu, Sbonelo, Sandile, Njabulo, Thabani and Phila- you are inspirations that light the fire in my soul. This piece is true to ourselves, so deeply embedded in our beings, and it could not be possible without every man being fully committed throughout every rehearsal and performance. Luckily, I have never had to doubt how dedicated these men are, and how much love they have for this piece. I am grateful for every opportunity we have had to show our work to the world, and all the support from every audience member, everyone who has stopped us on the streets, and all our friends and family who have flooded us with kind messages pushing us forward. I am incredibly grateful for my family who flew out all the way from Joburg to see us perform.

We did not get to Makhanda alone. Inga, Sine, Spider, Lindani, Dee and Kabelo held our hands every single step of the way. It is truly magical to have people outside of us who care just as much as we do about our show and our well-beings. We could not have had such a success week without each of these people giving us their 100% and I am so grateful and honoured that they were with us. We would not be here without their belief in our work. There are not even thank yous in this world to shower them in.

I am in such, awe, and just disbelief to know that our 3 performances earned us not only an Ovation Award but later a Bronze Ovation Award, placing us as 1 of 14 award winners from a pool of over 200 productions. We are still processing all the love and recognition, and it is such an honour being a recipient of such an esteemed award for a production that came straight out of heads and hearts, with every idea and choice made from our audacity to know that this show is so much bigger than all of us. Had a wonderful day on Thursday curtesy of @artsalivejoburg and @jameshallmuseumoftransport exploring 4 of Joburg’s museums while riding the City Sightseeing Bus. All for International Museum week.

We got to experience (for free!) the @ditsongmuseumssa Military museum, the @cthgcentre Johannesburg Holocaust Genocide Museum, the @a42.art house, and lastly @constitution_hill.

We ended the evening with music and food @saint_germain44. Overall an experience I won’t forget! ❤️ by @theodore_ghorbany

I was gonna come here and say that third year is looking out to be the hardest yet, but then I watched this video back and remembered how cool my life is. Performed 12 times in 2 weeks (technically 14), started the process of directing my first show, watched my role models graduate and win a Naledi award, and all in all had a wonderful time with the wonderful people in my life. ❤️ by @theodore_ghorbany
