The Big Wash If you attended our Waves of Change fundraiser, you know that this incredible event was centered around generous contributions from our treasured NJ surf photographers. This special initiative serendipitously connected us with big wave pioneer, filmmaker and giant in the surf therapy space-Grant Washburn. Grant is a lifelong waterman whose love for surfing was born during the summers of his childhood spent in Lavalette, NJ. In the 90’s, Grant was among the first to charge Half Moon Bay’s infamous “Mavericks,” a wave that quite literally carved out the trajectory of his life’s work. Grant is known as the “professor” within California’s heaviest lineups. With over 1,000 sessions at Mavericks meticulously logged in a journal that documents swell analytics, Grant is also a trusted partner of Sofar Ocean, a marine technology firm that deploys wave spotting buoys to provide the most scientific wave forecasting at Mavericks and beyond. Grant became a household name for his work as stuntman and surf coordinator for feature films like “Chasing Mavericks,” and more recently as marine coordinator for “Whalefall,” a 20th Century Film set for release this year. Using his documentary filmmaking skills to champion female big wave surfing, Grant intentionally dedicates his creative efforts towards focusing his lens on women like Sarah Gernhardt, the first female to surf Mavericks. Among numerous Hollywood credits and astounding professional accolades, Grant is surfer, a family man and a humble human who is deeply committed to sharing his wisdom and his heart with a variety of surf therapy programs, which now includes @theoisf. When Grant’s contributions did not make it in time for the fundraiser, he did something that true heroes do… he showed up. If you have ever caught a wave, you know the joy that surfing brings. But, along your journey- if you get the chance to help someone else catch a wave, it’s something entirely different; gratifying in ways that awaken your soul, allowing you to become more deeply acquainted with what it means to be human. If you watch this clip once, what you see first is the joy of a Glider; rolling, rising, standing and splashing with a smile that beams with the strength of the sun. And if you watch this clip twice- what you will see next is the exchange of mutual elation that swells from connecting another woman to a wave. This is what The Ocean is Female does. This is what Alli Scaduto does. For the last 6 years, Alli’s vision has brought survivors to the sea, to meet themselves again, to find a version of themselves in a new light- in the ocean. Alli did it by creating and pouring herself into The OisF, an organization that has been held and nurtured by the support of this community. The support of our small and mighty village propelled a mission that has become a movement, validated not just nationally, but globally, as the first surf therapy program designed for survivors of abuse…in the world.🌎🏄🏽‍♀️🌊🌸 When we look for leaders who are making things better, we often scan the horizon for some far-off big, loud and shiny thing to place our hope in. What we may not realize, though, is that the people who are truly changing lives and making the biggest impact- sometimes their softer, more subtle in their approach. Some change-makers create impact with a gentle smile, an energy of encouragement, simply by helping others catch their wave. Our leaders, they are not far away. They are here. And most likely, you can find them at the beach. Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes, they wear wetsuits. Seriously… Shell Yeah! On September 12, 2026, community sponsors, volunteers and a whole bunch of runners got together for a super fun 5K along the legendary boardwalk of Point Pleasant, NJ. To some, it was simply a beautiful, enjoyable event…but for @theoisf- it was truly so much more. As a community-funded organization that provides surf therapy for survivors of abuse, as a small Monmouth county-based, grassroots operation that connects children who have been impacted by violence to swimming and surf camps, programming we provide at NO cost to survivors, The Shell Yeah 5K is far more than a picturesque jog… it’s a gift that helps us to continue to build a legacy of healing and hope. This year, the @shell_yeah5k raised over 8K for The Ocean Is Female. Every sponsor. Every volunteer. Every runner. Your presence at the Shell Yeah 5K changes the lives, stories and identities of local survivors… all because you showed out for the @shell_yeah5k and you showed up for THE OCEAN IS FEMALE ! While these two words only begin to capture the depth of our gratitude, from ALL of us at @theoisf, on behalf of the families we currently serve and the future of an organization that will continue to exist through your support- T H A N K Y O U.
