Reflections on Illustration, making, life at @themeadowcny and paying attention with @ginniehsu
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A new episode of A Slice of Illustration is now live. 🎉
This time, I’m looking at Aubrey Beardsley and the power of black, white, and space. His work is elegant, strange, theatrical, and full of lessons about how a page can hold tension, rhythm, and personality.

Thanks to our film friend, @dunatrossi , I don’t look like a ghost anymore. 🎉

I’ve been kind of obsessed lately with reading about Aubrey Beardsley.

I was originally planning to film my next A Slice of Illustration episode about Kay Nielsen, but Beardsley was just too interesting to wait, so I bumped him up. 🤓😃

Episode 3 of the short-form pod drops July 15 on The Open Spread.

Shhhh…..the forest is watching.

The second short-form pod episode of A Slice of Illustration is up on The Open Spread. This one follows Arthur Rackham into the darker side of fairy tales, with twisted trees, uneasy magic, and stories that were never only sweet.

I love how cozy horror his work feels, beautiful and strange.

Good morning from The Meadow 🌼
We’ve been planting, welcoming new chickens and ducks, watching the bees settle in, and getting ready for plein air season.

I shared a little farm update on The Open Spread - read for free link to bio 🌿

Happy May 🌱

I’m super excited to write about this gem💎 May Horses by Jan Wahl and Blair Lent for The Spread Table this week. 🐎 🐎

It’s a simple story about a farm boy, two impossible horses, and a ride away from home and back. But what really pulled me in was Blair Lent’s color. The blue and orange feel gentle, strange, and full of quiet magic.

I’ve been thinking a lot about childhood daydreaming, magical realism, and how wonder can enter ordinary life without needing to explain itself.

Just shared a walkthrough of my winter sketchbook on my blog: The Open Spread.

In it, I go through the pages, some in-process spreads, and the thoughts that shaped the pages including color as emotion, creative stuckness, illness, and the idea of a personal blue period.

I’m starting a new series called A Slice of Illustration in the blog, and the first episode is on Edmund Dulac. It’s a short video and audio episode, and the beginning of a space where I can slow down and look at illustrators from the past with more care and curiosity. I love seeing the visual seed of a picture book.
I got ridiculously excited when I found the Hungarian folk-art image in Hungarian Folk Art by Tamás Hofer and Edit Fél that inspired Tomie dePaola’s The Hunter and the Animals.
What fascinates me is not just the reference itself, but how a single image could open into a whole wordless narrative.
I wrote a new post about the book today and why it’s one of my favorites.

I wrote a post about the book on my blog and why it becomes one of my favorites. ❤️
