Out 4/11 via Bric-A-Brac Records:

Dog Eat Dog - Redux LP/Digital

This marks the first official reissue of New York No Wave band, Dog Eat Dog's posthumous album, first released by UK based label Claremont 56 in 2011. Copies quickly sold out and have become highly sought after and expensive. Partly because of the Keith Haring art work, but also because there were only 300 made.

For those unfamiliar, Dog Eat Dog emerged on the New York No Wave scene in 1980. They were often seen sharing bills with the likes of Liquid Liquid (Richard McGuire designed several DED flyers/posters), ESG, Sonic Youth and others. Fans of Bush Tetras, ESG, Konk and the like should definitely take note.

Over the last year, the team at Bric-A-Brac records worked with the band to put together this fantastic new version of the album complete with bonus material. The LP's are limited to 500 copies and will no doubt sell out fast, so head over to the Bric-A-Brac website or the DED bandcamp page to order. Be quick!

I'm also pleased to have been asked to write a blurb in the liner notes about the band and the importance of this release. Thanks for letting me have a small role in this project.

W-2 - 1980 Demo Tape (ex-Jack Ruby, Certain General, Material, Curlew)

This limited (200 copies) cassette contains a true piece of NY punk history. Five tracks of raw, unpolished, New York No Wave recorded in 1980 during the twilight days of the original scene. I never would have thought I'd be holding something like this when I stumbled across the original demo tape earlier this year. I'm very glad I was able to get it back into the right hands, which helped make this happen. It's very cool to see my name in the liner notes. That is a first for me, but hopefully not the last!

The cassette contains the 4 original demo tracks plus a rare, never before heard live recording of Robin's farewell song to his dear friend George Scott. George was the bassist in Jack Ruby in addition to The Contortions/Blacks, Raybeats, and Lydia Lunch's backing band. The second side features an in-depth interview with vocalist, Robin Hall conducted by Rob I Miller.

The band features personnel from a few notable NY bands. Vocalist Robin Hall, was a founding member and vocalist for the proto-No Wave/punk band Jack Ruby. Drummer Bill Bacon, has played in more than a few No Wave related bands. With Curlew, NY Gong/Material, and Flying Island being among the most known. Guitarist Russell Berke, was a founding member of the band Certain General, who had quite a presence in NY's post-No Wave scene of the early 80's. Bass duties were handled by the mysterious, Shelby. Former Iggy Pop, John Cale, and Lounge Lizards drummer, Dougie Bowne plays drums on the live tribute to George Scott.

Highly recommended. Something for the No Wave heads and fellow KBD nerds to take note of.

Ok last one...lol.

I saw a few friends do some 9's based on specific genres, but that would be far too daunting a task imo.

But...I opted to do it for my last one. I chose my top 9 Hip-hop and rap albums, since all of these were a large part of my high school years, in addition to so many other albums from other genres. I had a wide range of tastes and likes, and didn't close my mind off to certain forms of music. Having grown up around Sacramento/Central Valley, the rawness and localness of the underground rap scene in and around the bay area, drew me in. It was also easier to find as it was easily found in the consignment section of the local music stores, or you could even buy direct from the artist on the street outside sometimes. It wasn't so far off from what the punks did. Most had small, self-funded labels, trying to get distribution or consignment sales. The music was real. Recorded in a bedroom on budget gear, full of venomous rage. To me it felt so much more real vs the more polished popular rap. That said, I also had love for the NY masterpieces unlike many of my friends who got caught up in the east coast vs west coast beefs of the 90's. Some of these bay area CD's are the KDB equivalent in the rap world, often fetching between $50-500 a piece. Regrettably, I sold my whole case of underground rap CD's to a friend in the 90's for $200. I do regret that decision sometimes.

I finally found the answer to a question that had been plaguing my mind since first obtaining the Dizzy/Celebrate The Criminal single by obscure, NY rocker's Hot Lunch.

Was there in fact an Assassin magazine as the center label on the record suggests? Well it turns out, Yes there was!

The Hot Lunch single was released as Assassin No. 5, with the zine being released as Assassin No. 6. It was slightly disappointing to find that there were no contributions from Emilio or Lydia (Lunch) in there, but it's still a pretty amazing find imo. The zine is mostly full of poems from several international poets. There's also a few pieces of art work in there as well. I don't see anything noting any other prior issues of Assassin (ie Issues 1-4) but does anybody happen to remember this zine, or those involved? I'd like to explore this a bit more.

The 45 was signed by bassist Freddy Billion, to Miriam. It will remain unconfirmed, but I'll always wonder if it was Miriam Linna's copy...

Bonus LOL that this single only cost $2.50 at one time...

RIP Emilio Cubeiro & Will Bennett
