Spine Stretch Forward is one of those elusive Pilates exercises that looks like so little is happening but that’s so far from the truth. So much is working to create the shape and movement. The powerhouse is engaged (hips⭐️), the c-curve is lifting the spine and the back muscles are all working to move the pedal. The cherry 🍒 on top is the upper back stretching and opening.

The execution of this exercise is so often misunderstood. You will see the hands and arms push the pedal down, the shoulders round, the tailbone tuck and the spine collapse. 🚫😖

Go deeper into the work with instructors who study and keep practicing. Keep making progress! by @thepilatespractice

Do you ever hesitate to post? I do… all the time. I was just having this discussion with another Pilates instructor. I would much rather just teach. I love teaching and often get so consumed by it that another day goes by and posting gets pushed down on the to do list. Having a business teaching Pilates requires social media and yes I know there are so many positives (love our community) that can come from it….but in my anxious pre-posting moments, when I’m sweating 🥵 before I press share these are just some of the many thoughts running through my head even after all these years of teaching.

💬 Is my form on point, could it be better, do I like what I’m wearing, is the lighting right, what is in the frame, does this represent the business in the best way, is someone going to call me out for this or that… but then I remember Pilates is a practice (hence our studio name) and we are all working on something or just trying to get through the day and Pilates helps. 💙

In this session I was tired and feeling tight (for me) but I chose to press share anyway because our studio has always been about “the work” and here I am working hard in my private session just like we make our clients do in every one of their sessions. 💪 Exercise: Tree with the Roll Back Bar.

Happy posting to all those who are hesitant but do it anyway! 🙂

What a well trained and experienced Pilates teacher will do for you in a private session; encourage, progress, refine and challenge. Individualized instruction that take the exercises to the next level in your body. In the exercise rowing 90 degrees, with instruction, you see the adjustments being made in real time, above the body goes back further in the hinge, elbows, forearms and back lift to create the lifted shape without the back arching and the powerhouse assists to lift the spine more with encouragement. This is why a good private or semi private session with a qualified instructor goes beyond the one size fits all approach. Request a session in the link in bio to experience it for yourself.

When looking for a studio or instructor do your research. Ask questions…. Where did they train and who did they train with? How long was their program and how many hours did it require? Was it in person? Do they continue to take lessons and continue their professional education? How long have they been teaching for? Know your teacher.

Proper form is our thing…. A few tips for Up Stretch on the reformer:
👍Pro tip: Press back and not down to initiate the movement. It’s the stomach muscles and HIPS (powerhouse muscles) that are the key here and throughout the execution of this exercise.
👎Pitfalls: pushing out with the arms, sinking in the low back and tucking the pelvis.
Remember 🚫 No piking the hips on the return.
👍Instead deepen the c-curve and articulate the spine to return to start.

The Story of Mindy Taylor: Building Strength from the Center Out
@thepilatespractice “If you are willing to dig your heels in, you can build something from nothing.”
Meet Mindy Taylor, owner of The Pilates Practice in Foxborough. For Mindy, the journey to becoming a business owner wasn’t a straight line—it was a masterclass in perseverance and the courage to pivot.
The Great Identity Shift
Before the studio, Mindy’s world was corporate law and high-stakes endowment management in Boston. But after having her two daughters, she faced the “huge identity shift” many women know well: moving from the fast-paced city commute to being a stay-at-home mom.
A pivotal moment came when her daughter innocently remarked that “moms don’t work.” It sparked a fire. Mindy wanted her girls to see that a woman could build a dream from the ground up, even after taking a break for family.
More Than Just a Trend
In 2017, Mindy opened the doors to her studio. While Pilates is “trending” today, Mindy remains a purist. She recently put herself through a grueling comprehensive retraining program to ensure her clients receive the “meaty” part of the work—classical Pilates that focuses on the “powerhouse” rather than just the aesthetic.
The Power of the Pivot
Mindy’s journey hasn’t been without its “leaky roof” moments—the literal and figurative challenges of wearing every hat, from CEO to plumber. But what keeps her grounded isn’t just the business; it’s the work-family she’s built over nearly 10 years.
“If life took me in a different direction and I closed the studio,” Mindy reflects, “it’s the relationships with my clients I would miss the most. You truly become part of one another’s lives.”
The Legacy
Today, Mindy is teaching her daughters—and all of us—that success isn’t about chasing a path laid out by society. It’s about chasing what fills you up. Whether she’s donating to local youth programs or helping a client in their 80s stay hike-ready, Mindy is proof that when you connect your mind to your body, you become unstoppable.

It was the beginning of 2016 and the studio was not quite on the horizon. I was teaching pilates, we had a young family and a beloved husky 🐾❤️. The creation of the studio came towards the later part of 2016 and what a ride it has been! So much growth and changes over the years. Thankful and grateful for all who have made it possible along the way. 🥳 January 24th will mark 9 years in business! A big thank you to my family, our amazing teachers and especially our clients who are the best people you will ever meet! ❤️🫶❤️

Choosing to teach and practice the classical method is a conscious choice, it’s hard, it’s takes time, mental and physical effort and a consistent commitment to show up and put in the work. So proud and thankful for our amazing community @thepilatespractice! Cheers to you! Wishing you happiness, peace, love and progress in 2026! ✨🪩✨
