Tiny reno and tinier design musings by The Sunday Times @theststyle interiors director @phoebejmcd

Kitchen! The cupboards, made by @fallowworkshops are @farrowandball Cola, with a Rosso Levanto marble that’s stained to fuck but we breathe and continue to cut lemons on it anyway. Hardware is a mix of @corstonarchitecturaldetail and @beataheuman. The utensils rail is @devolkitchens, as is the tap which I always wanted but decided I couldn’t afford at the time so bought a crap copy and nearly cried (just kidding) at how bad it looked. Spent twice as much in the end than if I’d just bought the Devol tap in the first place. The three stainless steel wall lights are from a Manchester based company called Nocturne Studio, and the articulated one by my grandad and grandma was about £40 from @vinterior. Speaking of grandparents, the carimite chairs are theirs from 1962. I’ve been sitting on them for 30+ years and resuscitated them by painting them blue. The blind - are you bored yet? - is a really sweet light linen from @eastlondoncloth and the banquette is in an @ian_mankin ticking. It folds open and is crucial storage in a small kitchen, as is the bottom oven which is rarely used as a result. Had the kitchen table made by @konkfurniture because it was an awks space and I couldn’t find anything dimensions wise that I liked. It was loosely based around a Charlotte Perriand design. I think I got everything but watch someone ask where the lamp is from. Oh yeah, actually, it’s @_findere_. Loads more flat stuff to share if you want it. Say you want it! Or maybe just mute me for a week. Either or! 📷: @horwoodphoto for @theststyle by @thepinterior

A snippet from my piece in today’s @theststyle interiors special, which is excellent btw. IMHO! ‘Some words for the wise. Trust your eye over any rule book and let that eye wander. Aesthetic monogamy is dreadfully dull. Being “done” is a liminal state: there is always as much left to do as there is already finished. The wiggle room is precious because it’s where you stitch it all together and implant the soul. Second, and this one is important: no matter how consuming your renovation, do not talk about it. It is transcendentally boring to anyone but you. The housing equivalent of dissecting your dreams or sharing your marathon training plan. Having said that, as someone who just can’t help myself, my DMs are always open.’ 📷: @horwoodphoto by @thepinterior

Home! Just two for now because some are landscape, some are portrait and all make me feel slightly overwhelmed about sharing my most personal space ont’internet. I bought this flat in the depths of despair, completely underestimating how much work it - and I - required. Thought it was going to be cosmetic and fun but it was deep boned and boring. The budget evaporated alongside my sanity. After nearly three years, it is my sanctuary, my favourite place on the planet. Home has, and always will, mean so much to me and this makes count my slightly damp and drafty, spider ridden stars ♥️

Had the pleasure of sitting down for @plankhardware with @goodboneslondon to chat about their latest vintage-inspired collab. There are handles, knobs and pulls, in stars, squiggles and drops, and they come in brass, nickel and blackened bronze. They’re weighty, full of character and capable of doing remarkable things to unremarkable pieces, from cupboard doors to dresser drawers. Have a watch! And then perhaps a home refresh? taken in Hackney Wick by @thepinterior

Anatomy of an excellent frame c/o @wearefacility. Had a bowl of antique Japanese matches, 20p each, in the morning, a lot of decisions to make at noon, and a bona fide piece of art by night. Turquoise tips were a real nice surprise. by @thepinterior

A pleasure to host a panel for everyone’s favourite stripe brand, @coloursofarley, as part of @shoreditchdesignweek. We talked bespoke design and what it actually means. From furniture made to fit a particular space to upholstery, patterns and colour. Things that go beyond what’s practical, that carry stories and sentiment and make a space unmistakably your own. Also the increasingly vexed question of taste and how we know what’s ours when we’re all in a wash of algorithmic sameness. Then we drank cremant and ate cheese and crackers which means it was all in all a gorgeous eve! Thanks for having me @louisatratalos 📸: @cuplastudio by @thepinterior

Moving flat temporarily on hold because how silly of me to forget the fuckery of trying to do so. No flats I like, then some flats I like, then we know it’s 10.30am and you’ve only had a 7 minute viewing but it’s best and finals by 12, and other interest you ask? Oh all chain free and cash, duh. I’m taking a breather so as not to make any bad decisions. But never on pause is my brain and how I’d like my next place to look. Delusions of grandeur and Not London Living because how many restaurant-grade cookers and double width pedestal sinks have you seen in a 2 bed flat? One thing I know: there will be a lot of wood. On walls, underfoot, everywhere. And hopefully some bespoke. My fantasies on that front are out of control. Hand-painted tiles! Tables with ceramic motifs! Plaster reliefs commissioned specifically for the chimney breast - what chimney breast? Anything made for meeeee rather than bought from a tab called New In. Anyway, enjoy my insp while London property market continues to kick me in the shins. by @thepinterior

In the Journal: “Some would call it clutter but they would, of course, be wrong,” says Phoebe McDowell, (@phoebejmcd), an arbiter of all things stylish when it comes to the home and a matter-of-fact lover of stuff.

Alongside her day job as Interiors and Beauty Director of The Sunday Times Style, she also runs the popular interiors Instagram account The Pinterior (@thepinterior) and recently gave us a tour of her trinket-filled flat.

Every time I get a new cushion I think, wow, how small a thing, how disproportionate its impact. The latest is striped and stretched, from @lucywilliams02’s collab with @coloursofarley. It’s violet and brown and does something spectacular to the sofa. It was only when I got a giant navy checked one, with tassels at its corners from @arcove_london, and put it next to another giant - also striped - one from @buchanan.studio, that I looked at the corner of my banquette in a different light. I bought the chair in my bedroom, yes, to fill a corner, but also to read on. Or so I hoped. That’s what people do on nice chairs in corners of bedrooms, right? Read. Not once. The corner of my banquette, however… new squeeze, baby. I sat there for an hour, maybe two - zoom for creases - the other night, without watching a SINGLE TikTok. And my phone was within reach! Such is the power of a good cushion. It doesn’t simply soften a sofa, it rearranges your priorities and redraws your neural pathways, to the point that you delete your social media blocker. Just kidding, never had one. by @thepinterior
