the sims bayou greenway stretches across south and southeast houston, following the bayou from southwest houston toward the ship channel and connecting neighborhoods, parks and green spaces along the way.

when fully connected, the greenway creates about 20 miles of trails from blue ridge county park near hillcroft to milby park in southeast houston.

but beyond the mileage, i think this is one of those spots that shows a another side of houston. long stretches of water, thick tree lines, and a good integration of green space, recreation and art.

there’s a lot more greenery hiding throughout houston than folks sometimes give the city credit for. you just have to know where to look.

i took this photo in december 2020 on the edge of downtown houston, right outside a parking lot near rothwell and san jacinto.

across the wall of the abandoned texas studios warehouse, someone had painted the community’s outcry:

justice 4 breonna.

breonna taylor had been shot & killed by police in louisville earlier that year, and by the time i took this photo, her name had become part of a much larger national demand for justice, the protection of Black women, and ending state sanctioned violence.

sadly, this mural isn’t there anymore. not long after i photographed this one, it disappeared. the wall was painted over and has the message has yet to reappear.

while the mural may be gone, the sentiment is forever. #sayhername

sitting at 4120 lyons avenue in houston’s fifth ward is the louis robey professional building. it’s one of the early homes of houston’s historic peacock records.

founded by houston music entrepreneur don robey in 1949, peacock became part of a black owned music empire that helped shape blues, gospel, and r&b long before motown became a household name.

its artist rosters include clarence “gatemouth” brown, bobby “blue” bland, johnny ace, and willie mae “big mama” thornton.

fun fact: big mama thornton’s original recording of hound dog was released on peacock in 1953.

peacock eventually outgrew the early lyons avenue office and moved operations to robey’s former bronze peacock club over on erastus street. this marker is a symbol of where it all began.

my first time in puerto rico, and whewww, i got to capture some dope sights along my adventures in san juan.

what i loved most was how the city’s traditional architecture has been preserved and woven into everyday life. the renovated interiors sit behind exteriors that still carry their original character and history. its rarity, one you truly love to see!

at the same time, puerto rico’s drought, water shortages, and larger infrastructure challenges left me thinking about the long standing debate that has divided the island for years… is statehood worth it?

would access to more federal resources be worth the loss of such a distinct cultural identity? sure, there is the possibly of more fed resources and funding and voting representation which could definitely be a pathways towards infrastructure improvement and resource equity….but the hard truth, even statehood wouldn’t guarantee equal investment, especially under this current regime.

also, even states across the mainland remain underfunded and vulnerable to failing infrastructure, inequitable resource dispersement, and erasure of their local cities cultures.

idk. i don’t have an answer….its also not my business to answer. what i do know is, both equitable infrastructure investment and culture preservation can happen at the same time. but leave the how to the natives. the ones who know what’s best for them and their island.

nonetheless…it truly was a sight to see! thank you san juan for letting me experience you and all your glory. from the barrio streets and colorful buildings to the historic castles & forts, sun filled beaches, and old brick streets beneath our feet, puerto rico is truly one of the world’s beauties. 🇵🇷

old sixth ward. est. 1858.

meeting point of houston’s communities. perfectly placed in the city where Black, immigrant, and mixed groups of working class folks met in the middle. 🤘🏾

dope example of community created public art and the vision that young people have for building the visual identity of the spaces they learn and create in.
