✨ JOIN US THIS SATURDAY! ✨ Join us at Inspiration Point on Saturday, August 22, from 8–10 PM for the closing of Unlocking Tomorrow: Because Our Future Matters More—an evening celebrating the transformation of Hunts Point. 💡 Unlocking Tomorrow is a public art project exploring the transformation of the former Spofford Detention Center into The Peninsula, a community of 740 permanently affordable homes, Inspiration Point, commercial and light-industrial space, and a one-acre public plaza. The project centers on gathering stories about Spofford, supporting Bronx-based artists selected by community members, and creating opportunities for apprentices with connections to incarceration. 🎬 The closing coincides with the Bronx Independent Cinema Center’s final night of Bronx Film Week, featuring Bronx filmmaker Charlie Ahearn’s iconic film Wild Style and a double feature of The Wanderers. 🎨 Outside, you’ll encounter the brand-new murals created for this year’s Boone Avenue Walls Festival, now in its second year in Hunts Point. Aguilar is a multi-percussionist and bandleader who specializes in Latin percussion, as well as a recording artist, educator, and producer. Born in San Francisco to Nicaraguan parents, she started playing drums in sixth grade. By age sixteen, she was performing with notable artists from the Santana band, Pete and Sheila Escovedo (Sheila E.), and sitting in with Latin Jazz great Cal T. Jader. “Unlocking Tomorrow: Because Our Future Matters More” The first chapter of a multi-faceted public art initiative, Unlocking Tomorrow celebrates the transformation of the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center—a place once associated with confinement—into The Peninsula, a vibrant community featuring 740 units of 100% affordable housing, Inspiration Point, commercial and light industrial spaces, and a one-acre public plaza. At the heart of the project is a community-driven process of transformation: collecting stories about Spofford and its closure; inviting community members to select Bronx-based artists; and pairing those artists with apprentices whose lives have been touched by incarceration. The creative process itself becomes an act of healing and renewal, reflecting the project’s central mission: transforming history and meaning through art. The opening follows the closing of “It Takes a Village,” curated by Beverly Emers at BronxArtSpace earlier that day, creating a thematic dialogue between the two exhibitions. Opening Reception 🗓 Saturday, August 1 🕖 7:00–9:00 PM The evening will begin with Land Blessings, led by Caridad de la Luz (La Bruja). NOT FORGOTTEN We acknowledge the violence and forced displacement of the original stewards of this land, the Munsee Lenape. We acknowledge the youth who were detained at Spofford and experienced institutional violence. We honor the community members and advocates who organized to close Spofford and helped transform the site into The Peninsula.
