I invite you to join me and the very new @thetomboyproject This project was created over the last 9 months with the end goal of making a creative and communal space for tomboys to be unapologetically tomboy. For the girls who never fit the mold, for the girls who were told that they were transgender simply because they were and are more masculine of a woman, for the girls who have never been into the glitz and glam. Well, we are here to tell you that tomboys are women too. We aren’t trans men, we aren’t nonbinary, we are tomboys. Women who are proud to be women, who just express themselves in a less conventional way. These girls have been by my side for the last year and have truly shown me what patience, love, kindness and care look like. A couple days after my father’s passing, Maggie came over and brought meals, flowers and chocolate on behalf of her, Claudia, and our friend Caroline. They even wrote a letter. I am forever grateful for these girls. This project has more meaning now than ever. While my father is no longer physically here to see the result of this project, I know he’s watching it while sitting on that fluffy cloud next to the most perfect person in the entire universe. 10 months ago a photoshoot was done that changed the trajectory of my mission. Butch. This photoshoot was done to tell not only my story, but the story of thousands of other young girls from the around the world. Choose femininity or choose being trans, there is no room for a middle ground. But that wasn’t true. Tomboys exist. We are women with no desire to be anything else. We are just simply not feminine and that’s more than okay. Following this photoshoot my message requests were filled with hundreds of messages from people from around the world, stories just like mine. “They said I was trans because I was boyish” “I was 13 and uncomfortable in my skin, so they said it must be gender dysphoria” “I transitioned and realized I was just a tomboy” Because of this, my team and I have collectively decided to go again. We have a massive project in the works that will be aimed towards tomboys, providing a space to share their similar experiences. Thank you for your support and words of encouragement over the last couple days. At some point I have to face myself and be honest enough to admit that a bit more support is needed, and that’s where I’m at right now. It’s taken me a long time of denial and a long time of biting my tongue to admit that the weight of this loss is something I cannot bear alone. I am not the type who wants to talk about my feelings to a room full of strangers, let alone be in a room full of emotional people. But that’s part of what comes with moving forward - facing the uncomfortable. And boy was I uncomfortable. But at the end of the day, at least I can say I made a step. If you’re also going through something similar, I would recommend finding a local group. While I’m still going to dread it when I go for the next few times, I can already say that finding people who get it helps if you’re struggling with isolation. I’ve lost countless friends since his death. Those who couldn’t handle the fact that I can’t hardly answer the phone anymore, even though it’s nothing personal. Those who couldn’t handle the fact that I don’t exactly recognize myself due to the weight of this loss and because of that, I find it hard to care about anything. Those who simply stopped calling or texting because it’s a heavy thing to check in on and talk about, I get it. Especially when you’re young. Most people don’t lose parents until their 50’s-60’s, so navigating life without them decades sooner than most is isolating. Grief is a good way to clean out our closet, whether you wanted to or not. #ThePoliticalMixster by @thepoliticalmixster
