Glimmers are the opposite of triggers

They are noticing small moments that make you feel at home in your body, like you belong and feel safe & connected

Notice what brings those feelings to you

Catching your loved ones eyes
A shared smile
A warm hug
The sky
Light reflections
Nature
A connected moment
A great conversation
Feeling inspired
Stillness
Silence
Your favourite music

Stay in that moment, notice it and this stretches the moment from a glimmer to a glow

What or who are your glimmer moments

Tag your glimmer person below ✨✨✨✨

Can’t handle the heat? 🥵☀️

Could some of your medications 💊 be impacting your heat stress & tolerance or…..intolerance 🥵☀️☀️☀️☀️💦🥵

Did you know this?

Which ones blunt your thermo-regulation?

What works or helps you?

Share with your hot friends 🔥🧯🤣🤣

⛑️Seek medical advice and or assistance if you have a high temperature, feel dizzy & or have a pounding headache, experience cognitive & or behavioural changes such as confusion, irritability & any GI upset such as nausea & vomitting.

* some medications and every person’s experience and tolerance of heat is unique.
* Extra caution for older and younger people in general and who may need ‘encouragement’ to drink water & wear a hat.

* I spend my life chasing my people with suncream, hats & water. 🥵🧴☀️🧊💦👒

May Memories….of course I’m late to the ‘trend’ and
I’ve two words ……so what

I’m not playing keepy uppies & it’s bad for your health

Never one for following rules that break people
So I’m encouraging you to resist,
to not show up ‘just because everyone else is’
and to start showing up for you and the people you care & love for ❤️❤️

For all the highlights, and there were some really Glimmering ones ✨✨✨ there were also naturally trickery ones…
and not only is this Life,
it is Normal

So here’s to Normality & not Exceeding expectations
because life isn’t linear my friends and comparing yourself to only half the story of highlights isn’t good for your Joy tank

As Leonard Cohen said;
‘There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in’ ✨✨✨🕊️

So Cheers to normal

To the ups and downs
In the roundabouts of life
&
Cheers to you

@thepractical.psychologist
✨✨❤️🕊️🧠🌿✨✨✨

Name one thing you are not going to do this month that would be better/easier & kinder for you……..let’s commit in writing here and set ourselves a nice challenge 🌿🌿🌿🌿 by @thepractical.psychologist

I love, revere and fear the sea in equal measure. 🌊
Last Sunday I called my eldest back in from the water. I could see her thinking I was being overprotective the tide was out, she could stand, what was my problem.

My youngest was gleefully burning the eyes off herself, finding her sea confidence. Not wanting to steal her joy, but mindful that confidence and competence are two very different things, I told her brightly ‘’The sea is wonderful and the sea is always in control.” It went down exactly as you’d expect.
We use “out of your depth” as a metaphor for feeling overwhelmed, but even when you can literally stand, the real dangers currents, rip tides, shifting weather are always present.

The only thing predictable about the sea is its unpredictability.

Both times I’ve gotten into a bit of trouble in the water, I was embarrassingly close to shore. Neither of them were too bad & both were completely out of my control.

Drowning is silent, but grief wails piercing your ears, heart, soul & mind.
The sea haunts me as much as it draws me in. Decades of hearing all of the lives lost to it and to their families.

Myself and two friends went for a hike and swim in Howth a while ago. The water was so calm & when we were coming back in, only a few inches deep a rip current came out of from nowhere and pulled us back in. I knew the only choice was to go with it, breathe when I could & close my mouth when I couldn’t. I could see a large rock rushing toward me as the current slammed us back to shore and hoped to miss it. Which I did, thankfully.
I tell my kids and anyone who will listen, float to live &
Follow the sea safety guidelines.
Never swim alone.
Enter the water slowly and acclimatise.
Tell someone you’re going in.
If you see someone in trouble, throw a buoy if you can and call for help 999 or 112.
Shout and wave for more help.
If you get into difficulty yourself & fell in with clothes on, remove them, the weight will drag you down. Then float. You’ll be in shock, you’ll be frightened that’s normal. Keep your ears submerged, & don’t panic if your legs don’t fully float and conserve your energy & float to live. Thinking of an by @thepractical.psychologist

How much of women’s exhaustion comes from the visible load, and how much comes from everything unseen?

This week on IMAGE The Check-in, @elliebalfe1 is joined by psychologist Allison Keating @thepractical.psychologist for a deeply thoughtful conversation on burnout, over-caring, people-pleasing, health anxiety and the strong link between mental and physical health.

This important conversation uncovers something especially powerful: the missing link in boundary-setting and how standing up for your own needs is possibly the most important thing we can do for ourselves.

Because boundaries are not just about us learning to say no. They are also about whether the people around us respect, support, and help uphold those boundaries.

It feels like an essential conversation for women right now.

Listen now wherever you get your podcasts, or watch on YouTube.

Siblings - love ‘em & or hate em they are for many Lifers.

Your Sibling Relationship can be:

🌳The longest relationship in your life.

❤️They can be the most supportive & also know exactly what button(s) to press to be 🤯💣💥

🤬Infuriating & 🤣hilarious
with in-jokes that will have you cracking up with the slightest raise of an eyebrow that says ‘did you just hear what mum said’

A longitudinal Harvard study showed feeling close to even one sibling in childhood was a good predictor of lower risk of depression in adulthood.*

Good sibling relationships with a bond of shared history which may be traumatic for some,
and for others, carry a combination of the best of times and the worst of times which can be a great support in times of major transition which life loves to throw our way as soon as we get comfy with the last change.

Don’t pressurise yourself if your sibling relationship isn’t the stuff of family fairytales as sometimes everyone lives a little happier after if the relationship especially if it isn’t a good one to an outright destructive one to not be in contact.

Sibling r’ships need space to grow and change; as you will all change and a mutual willingness to put time energy and effort into the relationship is 🗝️

Tag your sibling below and tell me your funniest sibling story or why you’d like to learn more about your siblings and key relationships and I’ll send you on my book ‘The Secret Lives of Adults’.

Share it on your story and follow if you’d like to learn more everyday practical psychology.

It was so brilliant to have this conversation with the incredible @doireanngarrihy ✨on her first day back after maternity (such a big day ❤️) on her amazing brand new show on @rte2fm

“Those mundane things can delight a person”

We were taught Irish & French
but the language of love ❤️….
That wasn’t on the curriculum

When did we learn how to express our preferred way to give and receive love?

Gary Chapman wrote a book based upon his observations of couples in counselling and noticed a pattern of 5 different love languages:

1. Words of Appreciation 🗣️

2. Acts of Service ☕️

3. Receiving Gifts 🎁

4. Quality Time ⏳

5. Physical Touch 🤝

Do you know yours?

Which ones do you relate to?

I don’t think we have one language of love as every person and their experience is different as is every couple.

It can be a nice connecting conversation to have together and then if you know your partner likes words of appreciation when you notice something they’ve done name it ‘thanks for checking it with me before my presentation today, that meant a lot’

‘You did a great job with the kids today, I can see it was hard, you were so patient’

Or if your partner loves ‘acts of service’ do the thing they hate - fill the car with petrol, or empty the dishwasher - romance is in the everyday thoughtfulness ❤️✨🍽️

Whether it’s giving or receiving gifts, I know I love getting and giving a gift that means something special to that person, I don’t love receiving gifts (that requires another reel 🤣) the gift is symbolic of the thought and showing you know what they like (it does not need to cost much at all)

Quality time - that’s a tough one, but micro-moments of giving each other undivided attention doesn’t need to be long, it’s not about the quantity and is all about the quality. Watching a series together with no phones - bingo - quality time

Lastly physical touch - is as much about a hug, a gentle stroke on the arm to cozying up on the couch.

I don’t believe we have one language, I feel we are all more multi-lingual 😆 depending on who and what is going on in your life.

Which ones do you or your partner like?

I love sharing everyday psychology that doesn’t ask anymore of you as I know how much people have on their plate. If you’d like more practical psychology follow for more.
