Thank you sweet medicine of Temazcal..

For the opportunity to watch the fire warm the stones, among growing herbs and fruits

For helping us connect within our hearts to our intentions and lifting up our prayers for ourselves, family, friends, and communities near and far

For the sweet aromas and smoke that bless us, and are our humble offerings

For the warmth of the fire, the freshness of water, and the steam that purifies and opens us

For the coolness of the earth that we can lay upon and soften our tired bodies

For helping us sit with dualities and union

For the gathering of humans from different walks so that we can be together

For the good people who keep alive such ancient technologies and carefully steward containers for healing

For the larger web that holds us all, and the song of this life

🔥💧🤲🍎

Annie and Michael Mithoefer @thepearlinstitute sharing about where we are in this epic time in medicine work.

I met them first in Boston and completed my MAPS @maps__org training with these great folks in 2022. You may recognize them in a room as beams of light and kindness, but what is behind those sweet humble faces are also two of the world’s leading 💖 em dee em ay -assisted psychotherapy researchers, who facilitated countless sessions as part of multiple clinical trials, and have trained people all over the world.

So wonderful to have an evening honoring them at the Pearl Fundraiser this year! May the good work continue, and may be we responsible with the knowledge imparted upon us.

Turning the mind is the skill to deliberately chose to accept reality as it is rather than struggling against what we cannot change.

How often do we experience inner turmoil by repeatedly going over what “should” be different than it is.. anger, resentment, frustration churn.

The practice is to gently notice when this happens within us, and when we become aware we are not accepting reality as it is, we try to turn our mind, like a horse, towards acceptance.

It can even be helpful, again and again, to gently ask ourselves..what am I having difficulty accepting in this situation?

Acceptance does not mean you like, condone, or give in to something. It often is the first step to help us figure out what needs to change, or how to skillfully cope.

What is a situation in your life where this skill may be helpful to practice?

An evening with @abbieros, author of Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging.

Thursday, September 17 at @theluminatheater in Chapel Hill.

Most of what gets written about these medicines is written about the young. Abbie writes about the rest of us, adults returning to psychedelics later in life, or meeting them for the first time at seventy.

We'll open with a quick talk about harm reduction by @kykeon53. Then we will watch @thenextchapterfilm, a short film following adults over 55 who turn to psychedelic-assisted therapy to meet depression, anxiety, and grief. Finally, Abbie takes the floor for a lecture and conversation followed by Q&A.

Come if you're in the second half of life. Come if you love someone who is.

Doors at 6:30, program at 7:00. Link in bio for tickets.

When there is so much momentum, how do we tend to our relations?

By remembering we are part of the world around us, and directing our attention toward life, not away.

Observing flowers and trees, their cycle of rooting and withering

The seeds that birth sprout in the earth with food for us and the other, and the wombs with life

The water in the rivers, rain, sweat, tears and blood

The smile of strangers and the sparkle of stars

Sensing the line from our ancestors, know and unknown, and those that come and will come ahead

Harnessing each other’s gifts and petitioning one another for help, for collaboration, and for dreaming

Witnessing each other in our fullest expression, and practicing humility, forgiveness, and embodying joy.

The fire is always there for us to return to. It is always burning within.

By reconnecting over and over with life itself, may we help each other re-member that we belong.

With love to dear friends Naomi @naomiakatz and Robert, and our teacher Carmita @carmenvicenteoficial @carmenvicentejimenez

Today one of my psych_d_l1c assisted therapy clients told me of their decision to stop chemo.

After weighing that the treatments were causing more symptoms than the cancer, and taking my suggestion to read Stephen Jenkinson’s Die Wise, this person realized that trying to gamble for “more time” was not allowing for more fully stepping into what is already here. They reflected on how Stephen @stephenjenkinsonofficial talks about hope being a tyrant, and how since making the decision to stop treatment, they took steps to initiate palliative care, do more end of life planning, and focus on quality time with those they care about.

The person shared with me the intention for our current work: to navigate this process as best as possible, in a way that can be good for them and for those around them, and that their own journey help their family get rid of stigma about death.

May it be so, dear one. May it be so.

People often ask how my yoga and medicine work intersect

There are many answers that I can offer.. and just one of them, is sharing how a yogi friend (who i also trekked with in Mongolia) happens to be able to ship a massive amount of free tobacco for my work, straight from someone’s farm.

10 years ago it would have been unimaginable, how the strands weave together now.

As our teacher Sri Dharma Mittra says, “It’s all perfect.”

So many thanks to my ever innovative friend @alexanderzubkov9 and the generosity of community.
