Ever aheard of “lesbian bed death”? I hadn’t. I didn’t actually hear this lazy, inaccurate, hurtful term until well into my first year of engagement. I could talk for days about this misunderstood but shared experience in the Sapphic community, but just these 3minutes and 42seconds were written from the initial heartbreak of such a misunderstanding. The moment of introduction to the brick walls that, triggered by opposing traumas, can shoot up in us. Dear California was written from a deep wound inflicted by 35 years of Patriarchal expectation and conformity, and how terrifying it can feel in that confrontation between survival mechanisms and yearning love to choose healing. To choose staring that aching fear in the eyes and making a shift. To finally actually choose self, after decades of being tricked into thinking that’s what you’d been doing all along. Though this song was written amidst the confusion, pain, self hatred and the rage, I’m so glad it was. Otherwise I might not remember how real my body can make something feel. I wrote The Room to encompass and process what it feels like to lose a Mother to her own stories. Her own toxicity. What it feels like to beg for health, safety and healing only to be lost in the echo of her victim song. The next single, Shade, I wrote as a narrative about what I like to call RideOrDie Syndrome, romanticizing roles in eachother’s lives. Specifically the perpetuated, though rarely acknowledged, emotional-spousal support role (Insert nonchalant #lesbian stereotype joke here) until the connection that felt so safe to begin with slowly rots away……the interesting thing about this song is that the victim perspective is felt by both parties. And there’s truth in that. But one of those victim’s rotted first and fell from the tree (cementing their story) and leaving the other apple to rot in wrongful persecution and shame.Both are victims, but the one to scream it first from a place of blame becomes the perpetrator. It’s a shitty way to break a cycle. Penetrome: …The psychosexual exchange that must occur to agree to such pain for the promise of healing….I wrote this to encapsulate the concept of personal growth (self development, trauma healing, generation pattern breaking etc) as an immediate relative to rough sex. The Push/pull. The consensual non-consent. The breakthrough undoubtedly followed by guilt and shame. I used the body of my frustrating experience as a child musician (and into adulthood) to hold the concept for this song. The experience was one of self-berating, rage toward discipline and the clear acknowledgment of the slippery grip on the purity of artistic expression. Day in and day out, while I was on the verge of tears, my great-grandfather tried to train me with a metronome. I could play the piece note for note when allowed to play with interpretative, flow-like rhythm. But the moment he flicked the metronome and the ticking began I couldn’t feel the music. And I f I couldn’t feel the music my muscle memory would go blank. My bubbling disappointment in myself and this defeat would read as absolute petulance. Which further enraged me as a teacher’s pet and people pleaser (even at that age). I felt so unheard. To this day I refuse. (The moments I had to play to a click track in studio we’re hilarious, and soul crushing. But necessary unless I wanted a solo live album) So within the container of this push/pull experience with a metronome I paint you a picture of the Penetrome. The big machine. The pressure cooker to grow. The psychosexual exchange that must occur to agree to such pain for the promise of healing. The agreement. PIC SELECTION: Truly contemplative MARKETING CONNOTATION: “I have something truly tender and important to say” …Marketing, at times, is such a hilarious and despicable concept. So let’s roll our eyes collectively and get right to it, yea? I’m changing the title of my upcoming debut album from Whimsical Rebel : The Albumwhy? Because it was brought to my attention that though it could be argued the word rebel is not inherently a triggering word when used for it’s given definition…it does, thanks to ignorant people who perpetuate hate and call it history, have a triggering meaning for so many. And me, a white woman from the south, isn’t about to change that by hiding behind the “but that’s not how iii’mmm using it” blanket privileged excuse to avoid whatever inconvenience. So that’s it. Period. No big marketing “look how considerate and soul searching I am” “buy my music because I’m such an alllyyy” bullshit. A loving person (@jordan.chose) implied that my title could have an effect I would never want on someone’s heart.So I changed it.Because that’s what we fucking do. We care about humans, and how our actions effect them (not limited to, and even especially, when our actions effect them indirectly and unintentionally)Was there resistance when I first heard that it COULD have that effect? Of course. I’m white. My dna literally shouts “that wasn’t your intention so defend yourself so you don’t have to feel like a bad guy!”But with the swift reminder that intention means fuck all in the face of awareness, that’s all it took for my heart and head to remember how we want to exist in this world and not fight the obvious course correction when it’s needed. Can I change the name of the book/audiobook. It might a little late for that, and it feels like I would be trying to delete ignorance rather than shine light on it and continue to normalize the choice to change. (But of course will keep y’all posted if changes are possible on that end)In the meantime…It’s official.
