Today the Downtown Alliance named me a Cultural Icon of Salt Lake City. This city has been my greatest collaborator, my biggest inspiration and the community I have chosen every single day since I was 25 years old.

I almost left. San Francisco was calling. A bigger city, a bigger title, a bigger life. Or so I thought.

To every artist, every maker, every creative who ever trusted SLUG Magazine with their story, who set up a booth at Craft Lake City and called themselves a creator for the first time, who stayed when it would have been easier to leave. This one is for you.

To my husband Fletcher, and to every paid and volunteer team member at SLUG Mag and Craft Lake City who showed up through every hard season. None of this exists without you.

Salt Lake City, twenty-five years later, I would make the same choice every single time. by @therealangela

Motor City X SLC, day two.

Breakfast in a conservatory on the 13th floor Booktower. Murals the size of buildings. Third Man Records. A night market. Karaoke until late and a walk to the riverfront.

Detroit makes you rethink what’s possible when people decide to stop waiting and just build with what they have.

Detroit vs. Everybody is not just a slogan. This city earned that phrase and you feel it in every abandoned building and block that got torn down and rebuilt by people who refused to leave.

Salt Lake City has that same energy. We just haven’t named it loud enough yet.

I’m thinking about that. by @therealangela

Eleven years married. Twenty-something years together. Five years as parents.

I snuck away from a trip to Detroit with city leaders to record a love letter for my husband at Third Man Records. A 45. My voice, my words, pressed into vinyl so it outlasts any text message or saved voicemail. So Esmé will always have it too.

We are living in an era where people are walking away from long relationships. I get it. Long love is hard. It asks you to keep choosing the same person through versions of yourself neither of you expected.

Eleven years later, I still choose Fletcher. More intentionally now than ever.

I am not coasting. I am doubling down. Asking myself how I can be a better partner, a more present wife, a more generous person to the one who has been in my corner through every season: losing my parents, growing the magazine, starting the nonprofit, the late nights and the early mornings.

Commitment is the most important thing I am building.

Happy 11th anniversary, Fletcher Booth. I love you on wax and in real life. taken in Third Man Pressing by @therealangela

Last Saturday I spent 24 hours on a flower farm with my family. I didn’t bring my laptop.

We learned how to grow dahlias from Jessica Duncan of @bloomflowergarden. @pamelamo taught us the art of floral arrangement as we made our own using the beautiful dahlia’s grown by @mountainmanflowers. We set the table surrounded by flowers arrangement we built ourselves and ate a meal prepared by private chef @aespanet before a harvest moon.

We made s’mores around a campfire. Shared stories. Went to bed in tents.

Time in nature is one of my favorite pastimes. It grounds me, slows me down and allows me the space to observe and get back to childlike wonderment. The timing of Dahlia Day Camp Couldn’t have landed at a more perfect time. September was full of dynamic business challenges. Multiple team exits. New hires. Sales goals missed. A brand new gallery opening. A budding leadership program. A magazine to be made. A major event moving to a new venue and city. All beautiful, necessary changes.

Dahlia Day Camp gave me a 24 refuge with family, friends and flowers. I left recharged and ready to get back at it.

This is what I know after 25 years of building businesses. The resets are not a reward for finishing. They are a requirement for continuing. You do not earn the farm. You schedule it early, because the leaders who last are the ones who refuel before the tank hits empty.

Thank you Pam. And thank you to every single dahlia bloom. Can’t wait for next year! taken in Morgan, Utah by @therealangela

Last night I had the privilege of attending the Equality Utah Gala alongside leadership from @spy_hop @artaccessutah @slugmag and @craftlakecity.

@equalityutah does the hard, necessary work of advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ Utahns. Showing up for organizations like this is part of what it means to be values-driven.

We welcomed their new executive director, Essie Gonzsen and her vision for the road ahead is energizing.

Thank you Patty and John Haslett for sponsoring our tables. They give quietly and consistently and this community feels it.

Collaboration and solidarity across organizations is how change actually compounds. Proud to “take flight” alongside good people doing good work. taken in Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City by @therealangela

Before I was a magazine publisher. Before I was an executive director. I was a girl with a camera in the crowd.

I got my start photographing bands in Salt Lake City’s underground scene in the 1990s. Local stages, house shows, dingy practice spaces. For me it was never about being seen, it was about capturing the people who deserved to be.

Earlier this year I had the privilege of photographing Rebecca K. Vernon for her solo project, The Keening. Rebecca is a force. Known worldwide in the doom metal community for her work with Subrosa, her second solo album will be released to the world October 16 on Relapse Records.

One of those images just ran full page in Decibel Magazine.

I still identify as a photographer. I always will. Thank you for trusting me to visually capture your true self. It’s my favorite thing to do.

here’s a moment that happens when you watch someone you know do the work, stay the course, and then show up somewhere you didn’t expect them.

That happened to me last month in Detroit. I was coming home from the @downtownslc Urban Exploration trip when I walked past a @hipandhumble store at the Detroit airport.

My friend @sheridanmordue built that boutique in Salt Lake City over decades ago and it’s a staple in the 9th and 9th neighborhood. She built Hip & Humble with intention, consistency and a belief that she was creating a brand representing her local community. And now... it’s in airports across the country representing local communities everywhere!

I got to share that moment with Chris Wharton @slcdistrict3 , Salt Lake City Council Member District 3. It was one of those moments that reminded me exactly why I do what I do. I LOVE watching entrepreneurs grow their business, and it feels even more special knowing @slugmag has been part of that journey.

Every time I pass through the Salt Lake City airport, I stop and photograph the Hip & Humble store. A travel ritual. A reminder that local businesses can go the distance when the founder refuses to think small.

This is what supporting local actually produces. Not just a transaction. A trajectory. A dream bigger than one’s self.

Congratulations, Sheridan. Salt Lake City is proud of you. taken in Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) by @therealangela

Motor City x SLC, Day One

Surprise plane seat next to fellow Westsider and District one Council Member Victoria Petro. Check-in at the historic Siren Hotel.

Welcome dinner at Union Assembly. Cocktails with SLC’s nonprofit art leaders at Cliff Bell’s jazz club. Casino pop in. Late night city street discovery with Bad Brad Wheeler. Detroit has a way of pulling you in from the first hour.

I was there with the Downtown Alliance and some of Salt Lake City’s most committed leaders, exploring one of the most remarkable urban revivals in the country. The ideas we brought home go straight into the work we’re building at SLUG Mag and Craft Lake City.

Grateful to be invited on this trip, to be in bigger rooms in bigger cities.

Did you know the MC5 is from Detroit?
