Had such a nice time today in Buxtehude, adding some cello sounds to the soundtrack of a sunny Friday.

Busking highlights:
* due to yet another town festival it wasn’t possible to play in one of my normal spots so I ended up trying a new place and I’m so glad I did!
* an office worker stuck his head out of the window to wave at me and told me on the ground he heard me before and he enjoyed it.
* had some cute interactions with little kids, I love how fascinated they are with the cello.
* the best part of my day was several conversations with one man who was sitting in a cafe outside in St Petri Platz (my new location). He was obviously touched by the melancholy waves from the cello and it had hit a spot for him that he needed today 🙏🏻 he shared some stories with me and it was just one of those lovely interactions with a stranger that reminds me why I do this.
* one particular thing he said I want to remember is that it sounded melancholy but in a positive way. I’ve had in the past people react to not wanting to feel sad/emotion stirred up and that music should always want to cheer us up. I actually think music does stir things in us that need to come out, tears and emotion are not a bad thing. I too like a good dance and cheerful music but I love a good weep to a certain kind of music.
* also had a very lovely welcome from a cafe owner @bahamcafe where I played outside of. I did spot some beautiful cakes and food when I went in 😍 thank you for thinking to take some photo and video of me 🙏🏻
* all in all a nice sunny day to be outside and meeting people.

When you can’t speak the language, it means even more to be able to express yourself in another way.

Music comes from the heart and touches other hearts.

Music really is a universal language.

It’s hard to explain but it’s more important to me now than it’s ever been and I’m happy to be sharing my music with the people of Niedersachsen

These days on an average Friday night after the bedtime routine, I am usually putting away the dishes, picking up toys off the floor, remembering I left a load of laundry in the washing machine and then making a snack and watching something to finally stop myself go through my to-do list. I don’t have a lot of friends here yet (or they are also Mummys) so I’m not invited out very often to meet anyone either!

Last Friday I was living a different life for a minute, sound checking, back stage snacking, and getting to play with some very talented singer songwriters. I was even singing one song IN GERMAN so it doesn’t really get that more surreal.

I lived this life a little bit pre being a Mummy but then covid also happened, so it’s been a while. Although I have played with a lot of different bands and artists over the years, sometimes one-offs and other times more regularly, I don’t think I’ve clicked in quite the same way I have done with @sarah_mueller_music. It’s been such a joy to play and sing with Sarah especially in this setting. On Friday it felt like we’d been doing this for years. People were asking for music that had us both in, and it doesn’t exist (yet!). This was our 3rd „gig“ and it feels special every time.

I didn’t have these sorts of opportunities so blatantly in front of me when I lived in the UK, especially not as a valid side-gig. Somehow being here in this specific bit of Germany is bringing this side out of me more than it did in my homeland. Apparently it’s a little bit exotic too, when they can introduce that someone is from England. So I’ll take that. I’ll be the funny stranger who can’t understand everything but can understand music and feeling and THAT I can communicate. That I can get across. Maybe that’s why it makes me feel even more alive because I have spent a year often feeling misunderstood or not fully myself.

I’m very thankful to @deck_2 for the wonderful welcome and getting to really „sag Hallo“ 🙋🏻‍♀️ almost kind of arrive here in Buxtehude. I’m looking forward to more things in the future and just enjoying getting to share my instrument and sound with those that appreciate it and are touched by it. 🙏🏻 taken in DECK 2 Buxtehude by @therealcatdavis

I’ve played in town a couple of times recently, taking advantage of sunny but not boiling hot days. After the first time I played I thought maybe no one would come to talk to me, that it’s just a German thing, but I’ve gotten more brave at asking questions or starting a conversation, leaving gaps between playing as well so there’s space to interrupt. Had some lovely interactions recently in Buxtehude and hopefully I’ll play more often when I’m able to.

**busking highlights from last two sessions**

* meeting an old lady who was very pleased to talk to someone, told me her husband played double bass in the @cotton_club_hamburg in a jazz band back in the day. He has dementia now but plays a bass-ukelele sometimes. She told me her neighbours don’t really talk to each other and I was really glad I could be a highlight for her that day. She told me “Musik ist sehr wichtig” - music is very important, and I agree!

* a very cute toddler was staring right at me for a long time and took small steps to come closer and closer to see and hear the cello more. I love seeing the surprise and discovery in little people’s eyes as they meet something new to them.

* I asked two boys if they knew what the cello was called, so now they know! Their Mum said I had a cute accent when I spoke German, so that’s a first 🤣

* there was a couple that seemed to be really enjoying romantic moment together in the middle of their morning. I thought they might start dancing but they weren’t quite bold enough 😆

* of course I must mention my photographer Soyeung who I know from learning German here 🤓 it was lovely to have familiar company and it’s normally hard for me to record myself or take photos!

* I have been amazed at how I’m able to have some small conversations in German now. Occasionally it switches to English but turns out I’m practicing cello and language while I’m out busking now.

* Germans continue to be generous with donations making it worth the time and energy it takes to get out. In return I want to work on finding new material and fun pieces to play as well as those that hit the spot.

Sweatiest ever performance 😅😅😅 this was me finding some short relief in my usb fan 🪭 despite the ridiculous heat yesterday I loved playing and singing again with @sarah_mueller_music and look forward already till the next time. The audience outside the wine bar on Große Schmiedestraße were very lovely ☺️ 🎶🍓
