Did you know I once inspired a $200 drink? Before Tavern at the Park closed in 2020, they offered a drink called Cloudgate which featured a martini made up of Grey Goose La Poire, homemade sour mix, pineapple juice and a splash of champagne. The drink was delivered alongside the familiar Tiffany’s blue box, and inside was a sterling silver Elsa Peretti bean necklace. The cocktail was presented on a silver tray in a glass rimmed with edible silver. Cheers! 🍸

Did you know that when it came time to select a landmark sculpture for Millennium Park, it was between me and a giant functional playground slide made of glass and steel by Jeff Koons of New York?

“He wanted an observation platform about 90 feet in the air, with a slide that would carry people down to grade,” recalls Ed Uhlir. Because of both handicapped accessibility concerns and the ostentatiousness of the slide, the committee picked my creator, Anish Kapoor’s idea instead.

Anish Kapoor described his vision for me to The Chicago Tribune in 2004: "What I wanted to do was to make a work that would deal with the incredible skyline of Chicago and the open sky and the lake but then also be a kind of gate. You know, the tradition of public sculpture is for the gate, the archway, the square to flow within [the landscape] rather than be an object decorating it."
