Back in March this year I found myself in South Alabama with the case of the blues. It was there, in a rented camper on a farm near Fairhope, that this song was finished.

A few days later, I found myself in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans with sound engineer David McClay. David and I go way back. He arranged the session and the guitar: a 1977 Yamaha LL-15, a stool, and a collection of vintage microphones.

It was a characteristically wet spring morning in Louisiana, and if you listen closely you can hear the rain and birds outside. We recorded about 10 takes of the song and ended up using the 3rd.

Once back in California, I sent the song to my friend Justin Gaar, who, like David, I met in a past life in Alabama. To my surprise, Justin said, “This is legit good — let’s make a music video.” Sure, why not?!

I’ve always admired Justin’s work — not just his photographic aesthetic, but also his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get the shot.

Justin told me his idea was to have a truck driving through the desert with no driver. “Can you find us a truck?” Come to think of it, I know the perfect one.

I’d seen the Ford F-250 a few weeks earlier in my neighbor’s driveway. After meeting Dennis and talking to him about the project, I discovered that he was a longtime resident of New Orleans and an artist — more than willing to help. With the truck secured, we set a date and shot the video in just a few hours.

The result is better than anything I could have imagined. I hope you enjoy the song, the video, and this story of how it was made.

Cheers
