POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It was a big ask that turned into a small request…

Last year, Amelia hit a wall with youth BJJ competition. She was burnt out from a sport that we said she loved when in fact, she was far from loving it at the time.

The pressure to do well every time, to make sure that she was “marketable”, to feel like she didn’t disappoint herself and everyone who supported her was just too much. It was hard for her to express how she felt, so to us, it looked like she had just given up. Ken and I knew that we had to support her differently. She didn’t compete in Pans last year. The first one in 7 years 😔

We didn’t object when she asked if she could just train with adults, which she enjoyed. BJJ started to feel fun again. When things looked up, we asked her if she wanted to do some smaller comps. She did a few (reluctantly).

When 2026 rolled around, we asked Amelia if she would consider doing Pans. Amelia was content with training and had not planned on competing in Pans again. That was until she met someone who inspired her to try competing again. She started slow and did a few more smaller comps. This opened a little window of opportunity for us to change our ask into a request, “You need to do your last Kids Pans.” To our surprise, she agreed.

Amelia placed 3rd on her side of the bracket last Friday. She did the best that she could with the time she had to train before the comp. The girls in her bracket were so good that we were happy to see her earn a spot on the podium this year.

Although I wish it worked out better for our girl, Ken told me that she stepped off the mat after taking her L with a smile. She told Ken, “I’m glad you and Mom made me do this. I’m happy I’m here.” That’s the best she has ever taken an L 😂

I would love for her to continue the sport without the worry, just all the fun. Amelia has competed in 8 Kids Pans and has earned a place on the podium each time. She’s competed all over the US, in Brazil, Europe, and the Philippines and we’ve enjoyed watching her every time. Great job, Amelia. We’re so proud of you ❤️ by @therealmeelz

Hi! This is my first post that I, myself, am writing. Lately, I’ve been struggling with getting myself to compete and train like I used to. Today, I competed in Pennsylvania and I had some great fights and met wonderful people. Meeting these kinds of people make it a little easier for me to get myself to compete. I’m hoping to keep building my confidence so I can keep competing as consistently as I used to. Thanksss for reading😊❤️ @knoxxgear @diegobispoacademy @diegobispo taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @therealmeelz

7 years ago Amelia and her cousins dropped into a kids class at Jiu Jitsu Manila. The class was coached by Coach @meggie_ochoa a purple belt at the time. We followed Coach Meggie throughout the years and congratulated her when she earned her black belt at Atos HQ in San Diego.

Fast forward to this past summer when we visited the Philippines. Amelia reunited with Professor Meggie by dropping into @solasjiujitsu . This time, Amelia was able to have her as a training partner for the class. Amelia and Professor have accomplished so much since they last saw each other.

Professor Meggie coaches the Philippine National BJJ team 🇵🇭. Amelia had a great time training with their adult team while we were there. by @therealmeelz

Amelia has had tons of BJJ big sisters/brothers that have helped fine tune her moves growing up, so it was only natural that she’d be doing the same. ❤️

We have never forgotten anyone who has helped Amelia along the way and are forever grateful. We remind her to keep her humble. by @therealmeelz

IBJJF Charlotte “official/unofficial“🥇

Amelia’s opponent was unable to fight in their actual weight bracket so the girls fought in an exhibition match instead. Great match for Amelia to have after taking a month off from competing.
