The first time I heard @therealryu was when I was about 9 or 10 on what could arguably be my favorite video game of all time, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2. Styles of Beyond’s “Subculture" was one of those songs where the beat, the energy and the bars felt next level before I was even old enough to explain why. By the time I was in high school, Fort Minor had dropped The Rising Tied, and to me the anchor was Ryu. Tak was next level as well and Mike did his thing, but Ryu sounded like a lyrical surgeon. Everything was calculated: the internal rhymes, timing, word choice, punchlines and the way he could pack ridiculous technique into a verse without making it sound like an exercise. His verses on “Red to Black” especially should be studied by rhymers of every genre. Ryu had that rare ability to make technical rapping feel effortless, like he wasn't showing you how difficult it was because difficulty was simply his natural language.

Then came Demigodz, where Ryu somehow sounded completely at home beside monsters like Apathy and Celph Titled. KILLmatic still stands as one of the most underrated group works of that era to me. No skips. And he never stopped evolving beyond the groups people associate him with. Tanks for the Memories finally gave him room to carry an entire record his way, something he said he wanted to do for himself without having to compromise his ideas. Then almost a decade later he took it another step with 2025’s Medium Raw: he got behind the boards under the producer alias Hang 10 and produced the entire album himself. And it's all bangers. That's probably the part of his story that deserves more respect: Styles of Beyond, Fort Minor and Demigodz weren't three lucky stops in a career. They're three different environments where the same thing kept happening. Put him next to elite rhymers and somehow he still stands out.

Released on September 9, 2003, “Megadef” is the second studio album from underground hip-hop group Styles Of Beyond 🚬
Released on Spy Tech Records (@spytechrecords), “Megadef” was the follow-up to the 1998 debut “2000 Fold”. Formed in 1994, Styles Of Beyond was composed of rappers Ryu (@therealryu) and Tak, DJ Cheapshot, and producer Vin Skully. After appearing on Sway & King Tech’s “The Wake Up Show” (@worldfamouswakeupshow), the group began recording their first full-length album. Praised for the fluidity of raps between Ryu and Tak over sonically diverse production, their debut album “2000 Fold” took its place among the great underground hip-hop albums of the late ‘90s. During the recording of “2000 Fold”, Styles Of Beyond befriended Mike Shinoda (@m_shinoda), co-founder of the band Linkin Park (@linkinpark), however, Shinoda was unable to join the production of their second studio album. Including singles such as ‘Pay Me’ and ‘Mr. Brown’, Styles Of Beyond returned in 2003 with their sophomore effort “Megadef”. Production on the album was handled by DJ Cheapshot and Vin Skully. Guest features include 4-Zone (@fourzone97), Apathy (@apathy), and Celph Titled (@celphtitled) 🩸
Following the release of “Megadef”, Styles Of Beyond went on to feature prominently on the Fort Minor (@fortminor) album “The Rising Tied” in 2005. The group’s third studio album titled “Reseda Beach” would be released in 2012 🚬
