I’ve always found it interesting how wine and music often speak a similar language.

Both are about mood, texture, tension, place, memory. Sometimes it’s easier for me to explain a wine through a song than through tasting notes.

So I thought if certain wines were songs, what would they be?

The wine choices are serious.
The music choices are personal.

I also put all the songs into a playlist, so if you want the full experience, you’ll find it at the link in bio.

Which wine would you match with a song?

Most people’s mental map of wine covers maybe a dozen regions. Everything else tends to get ignored.

Which is a shame, because some of the most interesting wines are coming from places people barely look at.

Some of these regions are genuinely emerging, with winemakers building something new. Others have been making excellent wine for decades or even centuries, without getting much attention. And some sit inside countries we already know well for wine, but somehow keep getting overlooked.

Different stories, same result: wines worth knowing about.

Here are 10 regions that deserve a closer look.

Which one are you trying first?

Some wine rules are repeated so often that we stop asking where they came from, and serving temperature is a perfect example. We follow habits, copy what we’ve seen at restaurants, or simply do what someone once told us was “the right way.”

But are those rules actually rules?
For Part 3 of the Wine Myths series, we’re turning the temperature down and the curiosity up.

What’s a wine “rule” you’ve always followed without really knowing why? by @thereasonwine

Documentaries about the people, places, and history behind wine, from the brutal exams sommeliers put themselves through, to the counterfeit scandals that shook the collector world, to centuries-old winemaking traditions still practiced today.

Some dig into a single region, others follow one obsessive character, others trace an entire industry but all of them go past the label and into the story behind the bottle.

Save this for your next watch list.
Have you watched any of these?

Food and wine pairing has a reputation for being complicated but it really doesn’t have to be.

A few basic principles can make choosing a wine much easier and help you understand why some combinations just work.

Of course, knowing the rules doesn’t mean following them every single time. Sometimes the best pairings come from experimenting.

Save this one for your next dinner and drop your favourite food and wine pairing in the comments.

Not sure? Tell me your favourite dish and I’ll tell you what I’d pair with it.

This is the region that made me fall in love with wine. Tasting Nebbiolo where it’s actually grown changes how you experience wine forever.

A few things worth knowing before you go:

📍 Rent a car. You need it. The villages are minutes apart by road but public transport is close to nonexistent, and half the magic is the drive itself, winding through vineyards with no real plan.

🍷 Tastings aren’t casual here. Most serious producers want a booking, sometimes weeks ahead in October so email them before you land.

🧺 Go to the Saturday market in Alba. Locals shopping for the week, hazelnuts, cheese, produce. It’s the version of this place that has nothing to do with tourism, and it’s my favorite hour of any trip here.

🛏️ Stay in an agriturismo at least one night. Waking up inside the vineyards instead of driving to them changes the whole rhythm of the trip.

🧖‍♀️ Build in one slow day. After days of tastings, a spa afternoon at one of the relais in the hills is the perfect way to let it all sink in before you keep exploring.

This isn’t a region you rush. Go slow, get lost on purpose, and let yourself fall for it too.

Have you been to Langhe? Tell me what I missed 👇

We’ve covered two classics so far (Bordeaux and Langhe), now I want to go somewhere different. Should we explore Stellenbosch, Mendoza, the Napa Valley, or what else next?

What could possibly get me out of the water during a beach holiday, in one of the hottest summers ever?

I was in Maremma and way too curious not to visit @roccadifrassinello , the winery designed by Renzo Piano, one of the most famous architects in the world, and often mentioned among the most beautiful wineries in the world.

From the outside, it looks incredibly minimal whichI loved but every detail has a function. The grapes travel down into the fermentation tanks using gravity instead of pumps, saving energy and treating the grapes more gently.

The huge barrel room is dug around 50 metres underground, where the rock naturally keeps temperature and humidity stable, reducing the need for artificial climate control. There’s also solar energy in the mix. Around 2,000 barrels, almost no light, and incredible acoustics. So good, in fact, that they sometimes hold classical concerts down there.

Among the bottles I got to explore were their fresh Rosato and Vermentino, followed by reds including Le Sughere di Frassinello and Baffonero, their 100% Merlot and one of the estate’s most important wines.

Was it worth leaving the beach for?
Yes.
But I did go back after 😃

Saving this one for your next trip to Tuscany?

The Grape Escape is a monthly newsletter where I explore a different wine country each month through the eyes of a travelling grape.

Each stop brings
• an intro to the country,
• 5 grapes worth discovering,
• curiosities to talk about over a glass,
• food pairings,
• a book and album pick.

This is just a glimpse of what’s inside. Full issue in bio.

I’ve been migrating older issues to @substack and this one couldn’t be left out since Lebanon is one of my favourite wine countries and still one of the most underrated. Several are already there, a brand new one is coming soon, and the rest will follow gradually.

Where should our travelling grape go next?

Wine is the third most valuable horticultural crop in the world, with global exports worth €35.9 billion in 2024.

Yet that same year, global production hit its lowest level since 1961, down nearly 5% from 2023, which was already a historic low. The OIV, the international body that monitors the wine sector, attributed it directly to extreme heat, prolonged drought, and unpredictable weather events across both hemispheres.

This is not an isolated bad year, but part of a documented, accelerating pattern.

A 2024 peer-reviewed study published in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment concluded that up to 70% of existing wine regions face substantial risk of unsuitability if global temperatures exceed 2°C above pre-industrial levels. We are currently on track for 2.9°C by end of century.

The wines most at risk are also the ones most tied to place, history and identity. Regions like Bordeaux, Rioja, Tuscany and Champagne are the result of centuries of human knowledge, culture and relationship with the land. That relationship is under serious threat.

The scientific community is studying which grape varieties might resist what’s coming. But adapting is not the same as solving. In one of next post, we look at what those varieties are and what they can and cannot save.

By the way we are not here to be alarmist but I believe that honest conversations about serious topics are exactly what the wine world needs more of. The data exists and yet this remains a niche conversation, largely confined to researchers and specialists.

Do you think the wine industry and the people who love wine talk about this enough?

Some wines are rare because few bottles are made. These ones are rare because they almost didn’t survive at all through invasions, conquests, epidemics, and centuries of silence.

Some of these grape varieties exist nowhere else on earth. Some of these methods were nearly lost forever. Some of these traditions were buried under empires that had no use for them. What you’re looking at is what was left behind and what someone decided was worth saving.

Which of these surprised you the most?

Part 2 of the wine dictionary is here.

This time, we’re looking at more words often used in tasting notes, from peppery and nutty to smoky, floral and citrusy.

Some describe aromas that come from the grape itself. Others develop through fermentation, oak ageing or time in the bottle. Knowing the difference makes these terms much easier to understand.

Which one do you find hardest to recognise in a glass?
