For this last full week of #birdcamp, a break in 70°s and dry shifting suddenly to mid-40°s and some humidity + some badass bird dog work, tracking, and points + some lights out client shooting on the wing = early afternoon daily limit (4) of Maine Ruffed Grouse w some bonus American Woodcock. Enormous congrats to our client Jim and @maine_upland_guide_service ‘s team members of the day, Lincoln and Rooster, on their banner limit day in the Maine Northwoods yesterday #closingtime #takeittothelimit #maineguidelife #registeredmaineguide #bonasaumbellus #ruffedgrouse #kingofthegamebirds #scolopaxminor #americanwoodcock #dog #brittany #americanbrittany #virginiabrittany #brittanysofinsta #brittanysofinstagram #birddog #birddogsofinstagram #birddogtraining #upland #uplandhunting #uplanddogs #gundog #gundogs #gundogtraining

Good reminder to always do a thorough tailgate check on our best buds after they’ve been busting covers for us - checking eyes and inner eye lids for seeds, paw pads for injuries, grass awns, etc. - and even nasal openings if they seem irritated. That little brown thing barely visible in his nostril in the first few pics was a stick embedded in his nasal cavity. Drove him a few hours to nearest 24 hour veterinarian ER for some good care and now he’s right as rain. The pic ended up being the proof needed for the vets to get in there after it - it had moved further back and was obscured by swelling from his constant sneezing trying to dislodge it himself. Spotting it early at tailgate and getting the pic proved to be crucial #veterinarian #TLC #thenoseknows #thatslife #maineguidelife by @theregisteredmaineguide

One of the best things we discovered in moving here is that Mid-coast Maine is one of the most dog friendly places on the planet. Mainers generally love their own dogs and everyone else’s. Case in point: @harpswell_heritage_land_trust has many trails which are open to dogs and, provided the dogs have basic obedience mastered and handlers have control of their dogs around people, wildlife, and other dogs (owner/handlers should make sure recall is perfect and that you can prevent them from unwelcome approach), many of the trails’ regulations allow dogs to run free and play with their owners/handlers. Be sure to observe the dog-related guidance for each trail (hit link in bio for their trail guides that indicate whether dogs are welcomed, whether they may be off leash, and if so, what times of year, what hunting or trapping is permitted in the trail property and when - and note that all regulations mandate that handlers must always be sure to bag and pack out ALL solid dog waste), available on the Trust website, together with trail maps and other resources specific to each trail. I can think of few land preservation programs open to the public as great as this one anywhere - trails are immaculately maintained by Trust staff and volunteers and benefit from a large number of loyal donors who donate land and one-time and ongoing membership gifts to make this rare and wonderful resource possible for all to enjoy. When we’re not chasing birds in the Northwoods, we’ll be working our way through hiking each of these trails open to dogs this year.
