TEXASYLUM DEBUT ARTIST: LAYERS OF PIECE

Layers of Piece is the work of Houston collage artist Treva, who builds surreal scenes by cutting apart familiar imagery and putting it back together in hella dope combinations.

Working primarily in analog collage, Treva pulls from fashion, nature, architecture, food, animals and everyday objects. Human figures appear throughout her work, often altered with unusual substitutions, exaggerated proportions and strange surroundings.

Scale and color are a big part of her style. Figures are dropped into impossible landscapes, ordinary objects become enormous, and saturated colors, metallic surfaces, florals and natural textures run throughout her work.

The cuts and layers remain visible, and that handmade construction is an important part of what gives her collages their character.

Layers of Piece makes her Texasylum Poster Show debut November 7th & 8th at Equal Parts Brewing in Houston.

TEXASYLUM DEBUT ARTIST: BRIAN FORD

Brian Ford is a Houston artist working primarily in pen and ink, with subjects ranging from animals and landscapes to strange creatures and fantasy.

Ford’s work is heavily driven by texture.
Fine lines, crosshatching and tightly repeated marks are used to build scales, skin, feathers, rock and other natural surfaces. His creature work gets especially dense, with wrinkles, teeth, growths and rough anatomy worked into the drawings.

Ford also uses watercolor, often sticking with earthy browns, greens, yellows and muted tones while allowing the linework to remain the strongest part of the piece.

Brian Ford makes his Texasylum Poster Show debut November 7th & 8th at Equal Parts Brewing in Houston.

TEXASYLUM DEBUT ARTIST: ALOHA HINTERLAND

Aloha Hinterland is the work of Houston artist Warren Harold, a printmaker pulling from old horror comics, pulp science fiction and underground print culture.

Harold works heavily in relief printing, carving his images into blocks by hand before putting ink to paper. Thick gouged lines, uneven edges, heavy blacks and areas where the ink breaks apart across the surface give his prints their rough character.

His black-and-white work can get especially stark, with large areas of solid black broken up by scratches, cuts and tight linework. His color work uses acid greens, hot pinks, oranges, yellows and electric blues, sometimes printed over existing text and patterns or allowed to fall slightly out of register.

Even his more detailed pieces retain the marks of the carving process. You can see where the blade has cut through the block, from broad chunks of negative space down to thin scratches and tightly carved lines. That physical texture carries through everything he prints.

Aloha Hinterland makes its Texasylum Poster Show debut November 7th & 8th at Equal Parts Brewing in Houston.

TEXASYLUM DEBUT ARTIST: FIERRE STORM ART

Fierre Storm Art takes anime and manga influences and drags them deep into horror, building a world of demons, monsters and “spooky waifus” with a heavy dose of sex and violence.

His digital illustrations are built around sharp linework, exaggerated anatomy and big facial expressions. Eyes, teeth and mouths are pushed hard, giving his characters a manic quality that shows up throughout his work. Even when the subject changes, those features make his style easy to recognize.

Color plays a major role. Fierre uses hard reds, toxic greens, electric blues, hot pinks and purples against large areas of black and gray. Splattered backgrounds and heavy shadows keep the cleaner anime-style drawing from looking too polished.

There’s also a noticeable tattoo influence running through his character designs. Heavy black patterns wrap around bodies like ink, while horns, scars, stitches, masks and other body modifications show up again and again. He works in both full color and black and white, and also takes his designs beyond prints into stickers, charms and other convention art.

Fierre Storm Art makes his Texasylum Poster Show debut November 7th & 8th at Equal Parts Brewing in Houston.
