I want my journey in music to be a long one. Because of this, I’ve realized I’ve got to choose two things daily…

Genuine gratitude and a genuine, unwavering, sense of hopeful expectation.

Without those, a temporary slump has the tendency to turn into bitterness and negativity.

And that shit has a way of getting you slowly pushed to the edges… first being avoided and eventually forgotten by your peers who know this truth:

Every year, on my birthday, I take a quiet moment to reflect on the past year and put together what I call

To celebrate, here it is... “41 Things That Took Me 41 Years To Learn”

P.S. On Process: I started doing this when I was 36. I spend my life, as soon as I hear a friend say something witty at a bar, read something, eavesdrop something, or even listen to myself think or say something I find curious…

without overthinking it, I write it down.

Someday it may lead to something tangible, but for now, at the end of the year, I dive into the thousands of notes and find some of my favorites

At 37, I just tweaked it. At 38, I forced myself to come up with a new list, and 39 & 40 I did it new again. This year, I decided to cultivate favorites for the hell of it along with a couple new.

We’re down in Iowa for @thesarahcaitlin ‘s grandma’s funeral today and I find myself looking back over the whirlwind of loss this past year.

A cousin, two uncles, both my two grandmas, and now Sarah’s Grandma.

What a strange thing it is, to live so much of our lives with this arrogant assumption of time.

As if tomorrow is something we’re promised.

“Excuse me, do you mind taking a picture?” I ask.

They stare at me, confused, squinting through someone else’s prescription glasses that is the language barrier.

So I hold up my camera, point to the two of us, and ask, “Photo?”

A smile. A thumbs up.

I show them where the shutter button is.

“Děkuju!” I say as they hand it back.

And I wonder if they have any idea how lucky they are to have just gotten to take her picture.

Fourteen years married to her.

I still can’t quite believe my luck.

I’ve been getting a lot of DMs about @theokatzman recent post sharing some photos from our hang. Specifically: “Which were film and which were digital?”

So, let’s play another round of digital vs. film.

A few frames from the kitchen beneath the @turfclubmn stage:

Film. Digital. Film. Digital.

Which one I reach for is something I’ve been obsessing over lately.

With film, you make most of your decisions before pressing the shutter. Digital lets me shoot 20 frames and find the “perfect” moment afterward.

But I’m starting to wonder if perfect is always better.

Sometimes the half-blink is more honest. The weird expression is more human. And somewhere in the hunt for the perfect photograph, I wonder if I occasionally edit the life out of it.

My eyes still prefer film. It’s softer. Less clinical. It suggests rather than explains. It reminds me of what it felt like to be there in the moment.

And yet, I’m still torn over which camera to reach for.

Film. Digital. Film. Digital.

Which do you prefer? More importantly, why?

I was recently asked if I would feel different about a piece of “art”, knowing that it was created by AI. I said “absolutely” but, because I’m a slow processor, I didn’t have a full explanation in the moment. So here it is:

There’s no such thing as “AI Art.”

Yeah, yeah I know that “arguing over definitions is the lowest form of philosophy.” But I’ve been obsessed for years trying to find what I think the best definition of “art” is, and this is it…

“The point of art is to perform an act of self-exploration on behalf of an audience.”

So that’s why I don’t give a shit about this conversation anymore. Use AI… Don’t use AI… I’m not really interested in your end product.

I’m more interested in whether you actually went somewhere internally to make the thing.
