It was my first time in Sun Valley, Idaho. This visit was planned almost two years back. The members of Five Bee Quilters guild greeted me with enormous enthusiasm. They were all like one big family helping and willing to share their knowledge with each other. I enjoyed every single day of being there.

On my way around town I saw a herd of Elks, saw so many magpies and beautiful mountains all around. Weather was perfect, the leaves on the aspen trees were just changing, I heard the leaves rustling away, shimmering as if they were cheering on each other just like the quilters in my classroom.

That was August 2021? We were in Covid shutdown, keeping ourselves in a small bubble with friends and family and I can’t even recognize myself in this frame. On this episode I shared how I made a Kawandi and freeform blocks from my book, Cultural Fusion Quilts. This book was my love, my baby! I spent years making the quilts before I even sent out the proposal.

Anyway, today I was thinking about my journey as a new author in 2014 and what a journey it has been! This show is also one of the things I thought I would never do - be on a camera and talk about all things quilting with Alex on the taping of a show. I actually went on line, watched a few clips to make myself comfortable with the idea of being on the show.

I am so grateful to have paired up with my dear friend Freddy Moran in the same episode.

I will share a few tidbits about Freddy in the next post. But why wait until the next post?

Travels broaden creativity. When I come in contact with artists and see handmade crafts of different regions, my creative world becomes a little bit larger. Learning about their lives and seeing them work in their living spaces changes the way I practice my art. Their humble life inspires me and also opens a different way of merging ideas and materials at hands. Just the way my ancestors did.

In India art is a way of life. Everywhere you look you will find that for true.

Architectural Quilting

What is it about? It is about using design elements found in architectures and around construction sites, old ruins, weathered barns and buildings, city scapes just to name a few.

This workshop is about abstracting, finding structural design balance with color, line and composition. We focus on using the right fabrics, not limited to solids but learning to use right prints and textures along with geometric patterns.

Each student gets one on one ongoing consult throughout the 5-6 days of retreat.

This retreat covers all the areas of design. I will be in Pau,France in June 2027 @closmirabel

I brought home so many memories of this amazing week with @suespargo and the staff of Sue Spargo Studio. The space is amazing! If you are anywhere near Akron, Ohio it is a must stop shop. Try saying that out loud 😍 The class room is so inviting,quilting book shelves are loaded with inspirational books. The store has everything a modern and traditional quilters want. The pictures won’t do justice to the space, light and professionally curated shop. I cannot wait to get in my studio tomorrow and start a new quilt.

We finished three days workshop at Sue Spargo Studio today. The studio was filled with colors, textures and constant humming of the sewing machines. I am thrilled with what all of the students brought to the studio. Desires to learn, courage to try new techniques, step out side their comfort levels and welcome the possibilities of unknown.

Day 1 of Architectural Quilting with Sujata Shah! ✂️🧵

We’re off to a colorful start! Today, students jumped into cutting and construction, explored playful fabric and color combinations, and learned alongside Sujata through demonstrations, guidance, and plenty of creative experimentation.

It’s already exciting to see each piece begin to take shape as students embrace Sujata’s intuitive approach to quilting and make it their own.

I am a little behind at posting pictures of July workshops. Raw Edge Kawandi appliqué at Quilter’s Affair was so much fun!
I could clearly see the creativity flowing in every inch of the classroom by my students.

I am teaching this workshop @suespargo studio next week. I can hardly wait to see what students create!
